it's one of those oversimplified aphorisms that kinda sounds sensible; however the true "evil" is far more nefarious. the inherent weaknesses of free market capitalism are being structurally exploited by the owner class in america. they don't need business suits or charm - they have the country in their grip for decades and are so deeply entrenched that their hegemonic power is almost impossible to dislodge within a generation. greed has been systematically infused into america's soul... and masquerades as the american dream.

The bar is so low, all they have to do is use a few big words, here and there, and most people go along with what these thought leaders say. It's propaganda. Mainstream television news is propaganda and not much else. Rice could blame little green men from Mars, and Blitzer would nod his head in agreement. We need to talk about solutions. We need to end the War of Drugs, dismantle the for-profit prison system, demilitarize the police as we change police culture, and we have to demolish the military-industrial complex, among many other things. When I was a Jewish kid growing up in a middle class neighborhood, it was mostly catholics and Protestants as the main religion.Basically mostly Christian and boy how I didn't want to stand out and say that we didn't celebrate Xmas. When kids would talk about their relatives and ask what their heritage was they would answer, "mine were Irish" and "mine were Italian" and mine were Swedish". And I would say "mine were Russian and Polish" And they would answer me..."I thought you were Jewish" Do you think it's any different now? The reformed temple in my neighborhood closed and the land was purchased by a medical conglomerate. I'm sure there are Jewish doctors, but wouldn't it be more comfortable if the Christians didn't have to sound uneducated about Judaism if it just didn't exist?

Judging by a lot comments I see, part of the compassion side of this issue about the police for the Left is recognizing that a awful lot of people were taught 'respect' as children by getting the crap beaten out of them by authority figures. They then grow up broken to the understanding that genuine respect is taught by being given respect not demanding respect. There's a awful big number of people who really think that 'might makes right' because some brutal adult beat it into them when they were too small to question that validity. In other words, I guarantee you that the people supporting the police were sorely beaten as children by parents who told them it was in the name of love and respect. I think those people deserve as much understanding and compassion as we can muster.

Horne alluded to the extreme controversy surrounding Nicole Hannah-Jones and the New York Times' 1619 Project but he did not discuss it at any length. He just referred to an allegedly over-determined liberalism that has interpreted U.S. history without the necessary racial information or insight required to understand, among other things, that the American Revolution was fought primarily to defend slavery. This claim about the revolution is astounding. It simply is not sufficient to endorse it without reckoning with the other side of the story that has chiefly been told by the World Socialist Website and the historians it interviewed, including Adolph Reed, Jr., a black political science professor at the University of Pennsylvania, all of whom have something serious to say by way of rebutting the extraordinary thesis propounded by the 1619 Project. I think it would be gravely intellectually irresponsible for Useful Idiots to allow this central claim of Horne's (and Jones', and the NYT's) to stand without airing at least a piece of how the claim has been very articulately challenged, instead of writing such challenges off.

I learned of Dr. Horne in a Aug 20, 2014 interview by Paul Jay of The Real News Network. In video 3 of 6 he discussed "The Counter Revolution of 1776 and the Construction of Whiteness." I looked for other content from him. C-SPAN did an in-depth interview October 2, 2016. Book-TV has not covered many of his books. While Amazon has digital and hard copy, there is only one audio book. His new book can be ordered, but there is no audio book option. His unpopular, but logical analysis is hard to take. It does put the roots of our problems quite deep. Great to see him here. It would be good for him to do Joe Rogan. Marianne Williamson was equally insightful - really a person of depth and humanity. A repeat of this line-up with Horne and Williamson in the dialogue could move some needles. I listen for the content, not the comedy. The comedians are given a lot of material, but late night hasn't changed too many minds. Jimmy Dore wouldn't last two minutes as an elected official. Joe Bageant was a friend of mine. His 2007 book: "Deer Hunting with Jesus: Dispatches from America's Class War" explained how the right played the game. Probably too much cursing for the Dems to take it seriously. The biggest problem from my POV - a 1946 Boomer, was emergence of the notion of: "doing well, while doing good". That was a Devil's bargain, so their souls went missing. Policy? Lots of talk, no implementation.

This episode is absolutely essential information. I'm planning on watching it in full again. I really appreciate Katie and Matt giving a platform to older historians and analysts as well, especially those that lived through the 60s. Most of the crucial internet voices right now seem to be those that had their political awakening after 911 or the Bernie/Occupy movement. The historical context and spiritual aspect of all that's going on seems so important now. It's also interesting to see current protests in Israel and Iran.
