The key was that he could throw that one pitch in a multitude of different ways. Was it going to break hard away from righties? Or sharply down? Or was he going to throw it like a 4 steamer? You would have to guess, because all of the variants looked identical until you had to swing.

The regular Season saves record is insane, but honestly, the truest measure of Mo's Greatness are his 41 post season saves, He was a MACHINE! Teams you play in Post season are the best teams from that regular season, and he dominated. As insane as it sounds, he was 2 times better in Playoffs and World Series, he wasn't perfect, but his percentage 89% FAR outclasses any closer in history, with comparable innings in playoffs. It's 8.4 to 1 for Rivera, and the average for the rest of MLB closers was 2.1 to 1 in save differential. He was a freak. There will never be another like him.

As a hitter you might have been better off swinging at the first pitch with Mo on the mound. Relievers need to get ahead, so very often the first pitch is the best one to hit. The idea that you could work Rivera to the point he might make a mistake because he was somewhat tired, was very unlikely. He was too efficient, too precise with his pitches. About the only advantage the hitter had was that he was always around the plate, and pitchers like that do give up hits on 0-2 and 1-2. But the bottom line is that a reliever has to put himself in the best position possible to be successful, and that factors in quality of pitches, control, location, efficiency, and the ability to field ones position. When you take all those into consideration, Mariano is number one without question. The efficiency aspect has the bonus of making it easier for him to be used for multiples innings and on consecutive days. Congratulations for making it to Cooperstown Mo.
