In 1903 the scientist Marie Curie (Karolina Gruszka) was the first woman to receive the Nobel Prize for Physics together with her husband Pierre (Charles Berling). But only a short time later in her, mid-thirties, as a young mother of two children, she loses Pierre by accident. In a world dominated by men, she makes her way steadfastly, continues her research alone, and is the first woman to receive a chair at the Sorbonne in Paris. When she falls in love with the married scientist Paul Langevin (Arieh Worthalter) and engages in an affair with him, she becomes embroiled in a violent scandal. Right as she is set to receive her second Nobel Prize The Paris press publishes correspondence between Marie and Paul. In the full glow of her professional fame, the brilliant scientist, becomes the target of defamation. She must learn the bitter lesson, that reason and passion are not compatible.

Sorry, she was a genius and a very hot looking woman too (is a French Movie, so yeah it has sexy parts) . Well, at least Karolina plays the part well but sadly too reel time much is taken on her romance life instead of her struggles as a foreigner and a Woman to be recognized by the peers in France.

Blair K- You miss understand the battle for equality if you think that the issues men face cancel out the systematic oppression that women face. Anybody who is not apart of the 1% will face the oppression of classism. But to deny the negative effects the patriarchy has on women and the advantages it gives men is to deny history, statistics, and proven facts. For example let's look at your example of men experiencing death and violence through the lens of US stats ,1 in 13 murder victims are killed by their boy friend or husbands(most victims are women). That far outweighs the number of men killed in workplace incidents in the US. 1 in 6 women will be the victims of a completed or attempted rape, leading to an estimated 17.7 million Americian women victimized by rape since 1998. Where as only 2.78 million men have been victims of a completed or attempted rape since 1998(still horrible, still to many, but by comparing these numbers we can determine that sexual violence has a huge gender bias.) But you are right about one thing, modern feminism doesn't do enough to address the underlying causes of inequality which makes it ineffective, tedious and to celebrity/ corporate driven, because at the root of all sexism is classism, yet we only hear the upper classes speaking on eqaulity.

Maria Skłodowska-Curie. She never changed her name or her surname, just added Curie after marrying her husband. She was proud of who she was and made an actual effort for people to remember where she was from. She faced prejudice for it. Her parents were Polish, she was born and raised in Warsaw. Please can we stop making her French.

French trial ... certainly Marie Curie was born in Poland, but she came to France to finish her studies; free, democratic, evolved country .. and whatever we think, it is also thanks to this country that she became this great scientist .. I am certain that if she had stayed in Poland, nobody would know her today ...

I'm quite dissapointed that the trailer focuses too much on her love life - something she tried to avoid expose her entire life. What about her struggle to get recognize for her work as a female scientist? They weren't going give her an accolade for her work in the discovery of radioactivity. They finally put her name up for the Nobel Prize in Physics 1903 only after an appeal. A recognition that she works hard for to give her credibility. She spent many months/years away from her daughter to devote herself to science. There's so much more to her and I hope this film will showcase that.

The love life aspect is to make sure we identify to the caracter and care for her, it's just standard movie technic to get us interested. But trust me I've seen several movies of that production studio before and I can bet that the axis of the story will be "socially advanced genius struggles to succeed against reactionnary society", be it on the love or the scientific part. I myself do not much like these kinds of movies, and i think i'd be much better indeed if the movie focused more on the challenge of discovery

This is why I love the western film industry. The man who knew infinity, The Theory of Everything, The Imitation Game now Marie Curie. Even though there are shitty movies, movies like these make up for it. Bollywood should learn from the west. Instead of glorifying convicted criminals and gangsters, movies should be made on those who gave their life and soul for the betterment of society.

@MsCinis
@MsCinis 6 жыл бұрын
Vivek Haldar You are probably right. I have heard (though never seen a written proof) that the French claim her to be a French woman of Polish descent. She was undeniably a scientist bonded with the French academia, however that doesn't change the fact that she was Polish. As Poles find her to be one of the most important figures of their history, I find it irksome that her name was changed to sound as if it was French. Moreover, I happened to find on multiple occasions her name to be presented as just 'Curie'. That is completely unacceptable, since it is simply wrong. Maria Skłodowska would be more fortunate a choice, since that is her maiden name, but still, the Nobel prize went to Maria Curie-Skłodowska and I find it a matter of respect, if not for her nationality, than for the woman herself to use her full name as it was, without tuning it to suit anyone's taste.

I read her biography countless times and she changed it from Maria to Marie to "fit in" when she was registering for her university classes when she moved to Paris. I don't think she did it because she was ashamed; remember, she always loved Poland and she even taught her daughters Polish and sent them to Poland.
@MsCinis
@MsCinis 6 жыл бұрын
Justin Joven I suppose it makes sense for her to want to fit in, she was just a human being after all. Still, as a figure of history, in my opinion she should be referred to using her full name.

Why is it EVERY TIME they make a biopic movie about a famous female figure (queen, scientist, leader, prime minister, etc.) they always conveniently and 'oh so coincidentally' decide to show it form the perspective of her relationships with their husbands/lovers/children, always with them stating it was said dude's partially responsible for what she did, rather than focus on her accomplishments, like they do when telling the story of kings & other male figures?! So effin', bleeping tired of this sh*t. Recent examples: Elizabeth (the sequel), The Young Victoria, The Lady (about Aung San Suu Kyi), The Iron Lady (Margaret Thatcher), The Crown. 😒😒😒

In many biographies I saw it: Ali, JFK, Monroe, P.L. Travers, many of them. The human experience is complex. And the director is free to focus on work or personnal life of any person he wats to show. It is freedom of expression.
