Historians need to really highlight WHY Haiti is poor. They fought for and then paid France to remain free...some of the same reasons Cuba is poor.

I read that all countries at the time refused to trade with them. They feared a successful black country in the western hemisphere would encourage more slave uprisings.

@@renaissancewoman100 yes, a good book to read about this is "Island Under the Sea" about the Haitian Revolution. The French were so angry that the Black man fought for their freedom. According to them, they lost money and we're also made to accept defeat publicly. They wanted Haiti to pay for the rest of it's existence and not to flourish.

Please read what Roosevelt said about the combination of words particularly in naming a Nationality. You can be proud of your origins but you cannot sit on 2 chairs at the same time. What does the pledge to the flag of the USA 🇺🇸 says? The Europeans that immigrated in the USA 🇺🇸 or for that matter anywhere else in the world don’t put a stigma on themselves that is from traveling from Eastern Europe the more advanced European countries and of course America 🇺🇸. You guys need to rethink this idea of grabbing 2 nationalities as an ID which could be detrimental. Do you feel comfortable to be called “Diaspora” by the Haitians who some of them parents and grand parents surfaced in Haiti 🇭🇹 for a better life from the other small islands and elsewhere across the Atlantic, the Red sea and the Pacific Think about it, The preference would be to be called a”Black American 🇺🇸 “ with an awareness of who the descendants are.

@ Jean Andre: As a first generation born and raised in the US we can’t win with you... my GOD! If we PROUDLY say we’re Haitian then the Haitian born and raised is QUICK TO say “you’re not Haitian, you’re American” and if we we're American then you act like we’re “ASHAMED” of our family and roots. And now, you have a problem with the term “Haitian American”. I’m so tired of that nonsense. I will say I’m Haitian American as well! Too bad if you don’t like it, that’s your problem! I was BORN , RAISED, AND EDUCATED IN NY. I speak French AND Créole FLUENTLY thanks to the generation of my parents and the era I was born in. NY is where I know, and to be Haitian is the values , morals, languages, and cuisine of my family I know and enjoy! So YES! Haitian American is what I am!

@ Jean Andre: That’s ignorant ppl. And I get that too particularly from black Americans. However, I would point out to them that I clearly said I was born and raised in NYC and that my parents are Haitian. That’s on them if they can’t differentiate the two. They usually stand there looking stupid when I point it out. Your children have to learn how to handle ignorant close minded ppl like that. We’re US borns who are blessed to come from a rich culture and be multilingual. If ppl can’t comprehend that then that’s their problem. My birth certificate CLEARLY states Bklyn, NY. So they all can kick rocks.

The Royal Kingdom/family in Haiti and all over the Caribbean existed long before the west even know what monarchy was, they came and found us ruling and decided to invade and made many of our ancestors prisoners of war, never slaves!... These same warriors are called Maroons on other islands but they tend to leave out the fact that the inhabitants of the Atlantis Islands (including Haiti) had great and prosperous trading Empires prior to Columbus and the traitor crew navigators arrivals, who they called Moors. There is so much more to uncover. I am currently doing this for my country Waitukubuli- Dominica in the east, we speak similar creole. Many Hatian's live in my country, I never hear them talking about this. Even when I learnt the history of Haiti, they mentioned 'Christophe' but did not mention the fact that he was King and his counterpart Queen. so glad to know this and thanks to the historian who has dropped some more clues, it's up to us Caribbean Historians to keep digging.

I and every Caribbean person are aware and cite with pride Haiti's accomplishments for which they are still being punished today by the powers that they successfully fought off. You are the only island in the Caribbean that has kept and fully embrace African Spirituality. Would that the other islands would do the same. Without African Spirituality Haiti would not have survived to this day despite the struggles faced. Have a blessed day Voodum.
