The history of the Vijayanagar Empire -- and Hampi -- is diverse, complex, and rife with brutal opportunism. This in-depth look at Vijayanagar Empire history brings to light a dramatic narrative that has been ignored for far too long. Starting from the beginning, we'll go all the way through to Krishnadevaraya and Ramaraya, and that disastrous battle: Talikota.
Whether you’re visiting the UNESCO Heritage Site at Hampi, playing EU4, or just curious about this iconic empire, I hope you enjoy this exploration of the Rise and Fall of the Vijayanagar Empire. I have made efforts to offer a more nuanced overview than what can typically be found online.

Holy!!!!! A video about the Vijayanagara Empire? Krishna Devaraya is considered by the people of Karnataka as the pride of our great State. His court jester Tenali Ramakrishna has almost a legendary status with folklore glorifying the great wit and intellect that guided the King through difficult times. In fact people often draw parallels with the relationship Birbal had with King Akbar of the Mughal Empire. Brilliant stuff. Really enjoyed this video. Thank you so much for talking about an extremely underrated Kannada empire!! Edit: Dear all, seems like I've stirred up a debate through my comment. Regardless of your linguistic identity, let's take a moment to acknowledge the rich culture and heritage of the Deccan region. South India is usually glossed over when studying history, and it's usually the North that gets all the attention. And it's great to see a channel like Odd Compass dedicate so much time to our region's history for a change. PS: Fixed the error in TR's last name typo. I grew up reading his stories with the last name "Raman", have updated it to "Ramakrishna" in this comment.

He had a kingdom employing and balancing Hindus and Muslims. But he behaved so atrociously, he forced his own alienation from his Muslim neighbours. If there's any lesson, it's maintain good Karma, good stability and good Tolerance of Different Religion. Balance and maintain loyalty of the estates of the Brahmins and the Amirs.

Though being a non-Telugu speaking emperor, he patronaged Telugu and he himself composed many Telugu poems.. His service to Telugu language will never be forgotten by Telugus.. He introduced the unique poetry competitions like ashtavadhanam, sathavadhanam, sahasravadhanam etc. which are till date conducted by Telugu scholars. @@sanjaytumati I believe that it's because he didn't have a son and heir and chose a Nephew to succeed, causing a succession dispute between the Nephew Sriranga II and Venkata II's wife Bayamma, who adopted a boy and declared that child as the successor. This was because Sriranga's lineage was disputed and some believed that he was illegitmate. This led to a civil war from 1614 to 1617, and led to the further weakening of the state. I believe this migh be the reason why Sai Radha was angry with Venkata II, perhaps for choosing a controversial heir.

Emperor Krishnadeva Raya wasn't born to a concubine, his mother is daughter of Pemmasaani Nayakas of Gandikota. Pemmasaani Tirumala Rayudu was the uncle and commander in chief of Krishnadeva Raya's army, who won the famous victory at Raichur. Krishnadeva Raya's second(minor) wife was a devadasi temple dancer (Chinnama Devi), even though emperor married her before, her social status made her minor wife. Krishnadeva Raya had another wife. The statues of Krishnadeva Raya and his wives can be seen even today inside Tirumala temple. Krishnadeva suffered from small pox as a kid, with dark pock marked skin. Royalty in India didn't suffer from small pox even in those days, hence he was considered cursed and unfit to rule, until his elder brother died leaving him the throne. For all those who are fighting between Telugu and Kannada, please guys/girls,our common language split into 2 distinct languages only few hundred years ago, we have over 2500 years of common history, culture and customs. Let's cherish that.
@OddCompass

I encourage a look at the sources I cited. Krishnadeva Raya's maternal ancestry is up for debate -- some believe that he has Telugu ancestry, for example, while others believe that his mother was Kannadiga. The pervasive view among modern Deccan-focused historians is that his mother was not a priority wife of the king, but was instead a concubine of sorts. As for your point about the Telugu/Kannada split, I agree -- no need for pride to get in the way of history.

Impressed is an understatement. Also this might be the only channel I have observed doing Indian history as a focus. I have been lurking on subreddits on indian history in the past, finding free papers now and then on Indian history. They just don't compare to the ease of access and quality of this channel imo. Do you know about Kings and Generals or Invicta? For a while they went out of their element and did history videos outside of Europe. But it seems like lately they have been trending back to their older material e.g. Greco-Roman, Mediterranean, Cold-War etc. So this channel is really quite a good find!

Thanks so much Qu! You've honestly made my day with your comment, haha. I'm so glad that people are noticing the effort to maintain a neutral and academic approach to Indian history (while softening it with animations and a fast-paced narrative). I'm actually intending to cover Asian history more broadly, but definitely India (and to a lesser degree, SE Asia) are my primary focuses. I do know about Invicta and Kings & Generals (I find Invicta's work really impressive!), but they cover such a broad range of material that I imagine it's difficult for them to tackle the lesser known events/kingdoms/people in India. I hope my channel fills that gap! I know there's significant lag time between my uploads, but I'll have the next video ready by July 17th (perhaps even a day or two before), so stay tuned :)

I've watched history on a lot of YT channels- Crash course world history, oversimplified and even Khan academy, but couldn't find anything good for Indian history. I am SO glad I found your channel, like FINALLY! :') Also, I think it would be nice if you could spell out the names of individual kings in the video, I couldn't make out some of the names ( Or maybe it was just me lol idk) Cheers!

That is high praise, thanks! I’ve definitely been thinking that I should add name text (on initial introductions, at least) to help clarify for the viewer - so you can look forward to that haha 👍

Love these videos, learning so much about the history of my own background so thank you for making them! I’ve only heard of the vijayanagar kingdom & Krishna Deveraya through tenaliraman on tv, very interesting.

Ricimer and Ramraya, both slayers of their own Empires..... As a Indian who was raised in the West starting at 3 years old and has no roots to Indian culture this was a really cool video! Especially the fashion and the names. One day the clothings and the fashion styles we all like today will also become a weird old fashioned relic way to dress......

Fact: Krishnadevraya raised two muslim brothers from the very childhood, who later on became his commanders, but when muslim rulers attacked Vijayanagar then these two brothers changed their party, resulting in sharing the secrets of Krishnadevaraya's side & cheat.

All this happened because of what Rama Raya did. On the way back from his campaign against Hussain Nizam Shah I, he let his soldiers loot, kill, rape, steal and burn everything on their way as they pleased while they were crossing the lands of Ali Adil Shah I despite the fact that he was an ally of Rama Raya. This caused the Deccan Sultanates to unite against him and the Gilani brothers to betray him. You can't just blame the Muslim rulers for everything that went wrong in Indian history while ignoring what Hindu rulers did to cause these events and act like they did nothing wrong and everything is the fault of Muslims...

The Vijayanagar did not end in 1565. The 4th house called Aravidu dynasty ruled from 1565 and the glorious rule of Venkatapati Deva Raya II saw a revival. It finally ended in 1646
