I really enjoyed this video Marie-Anne, I really like when you display outfits visually along discussing them. I have always had a fascination with all things French from being a child (I'm 56 now 🤭)....I have French roots in my ancestry so maybe it's somewhere in my DNA, I have always liked the French style of dressing when I saw a French girl on holiday in Spain dressed in a white t-shirt, navy culottes and ballerina pumps, she looked confident (and that's what I really admired for myself), effortlessly cool and elegant, yet I couldn't work out at the time what it was ....French ladies have this special quality of being happy in their own skin and embracing what others 'perceive' to be flaws, when in fact they are our unique qualities, we should all take notice of that message x

Food for thought, I need to "love my clothes". This concept will help with purging my closet. Thank you.
@susie98935 жыл бұрын
Yes, I'm in that process too. You may also find some minimalist ideas helpful as you purge your closet. I love this concept of the fantasy self - the idea is that when we love an item but never use it then we probably purchased it for our fantasy self. The fantasy self is the person we'd like to think of ourselves as being but just aren't for whatever reason, (could be as a result of comparing ourselves, even trying to model ourselves on, someone we like/respect, or maybe expectations of others that we've subconsciously accepted into our psyche etc) we need to face up to 'her' and acknowledge that 'she' just doesn't fit into our lifestyle and never will (some even find this process devastating, it's been described as 'letting go of a dream' by some, but if the dream isn't serving you but rather holding you back in some way then it's TIME to let it go). After that, purging becomes so much easier.

Can't go wrong with a sheath dress in a neutral color. Depending on where you live, pair it with a cardigan sweater, pashmina wrap, a light trench coat, a wool coat, a blazer, or a denim jacket for a more informal look. :) The only event for which it wouldn't work is a formal ball where you'd need a gown. I 've been wearing the same dress every day since March, and whenever my SO and have an event, he says, "What do you think you'll wear?" LOL.

I too love stripes! I will never feel guilty for having more than a few striped items in my wardrobe. They are so flattering.
@susie98935 жыл бұрын
And the great thing I'm learning about stripes is that they tend to elevate an outfit - so if I'm going for a casual look I still look classy if I'm wearing a striped shirt but I can dress them up too eg, I have a black and white striped dress that's kinda slinky but bcos it's striped I can dress it down so that it's a good day-to-night outfit; it's got a bit of a sheen to it too so I wore it to a wedding once - quite a formal wedding but I got away with it cos of my accessories (although black and white is classic so maybe it's that and not the stripes?)

I'm glad you mentioned in this video that instead of a little black dress, your viewers can instead go with a grey or dark blue dress. I have very pale skin, red hair and blue eyes. According to season analysis, I am a true/warm spring. Black makes me look washed out and far too pale. Dark blue/navy is my dark neutral colour.

Great video - especially nice to see the clothing - and how the colors work together. I have all the items except for the blue jeans (I've been wearing yoga pants for casual, I know it's wrong...but I cover up my hips) - I need to take the time to find a pair of jeans that fit properly. I have a couple pairs of suede trousers that are similar to the blue jeans style - so I wear those. It is chilly often where I live, so I like to wear long trench coats. I have three now - navy blue, dark green, and black leather (which I don't wear often). I expect to keep these coats forever.

Merci. Very interesting. I guess your items are for women over 30 - 40 or do younger girls wearing such clothes too in France?
@susie98935 жыл бұрын
Lots of examples of this on Pinterest and Google images etc under French street or Urban style (some are just American interpretation of French style, of course, but overall it gives you the idea of what they wear, how they wear it and that they do indeed stick to more classic styles and silhouettes - until this was pointed out to me I never realised but now I can usually pick the genuine from the 'fake'. I thought it was a bit limiting at first, but just like with minimalism, you can tailor it to suit your style and lifestyle - I'm learning anyway - good tips from this chic even though her style is a LOT more conservative than mine; I'm not so much interested in the style of her items but the function they serve her, how she uses them in her lifestyle and then I can consider whether I need an item like that in my lifestyle at all and if so how might that translate in my style? Eg. I am SO not a blazer person but that's fine - I have a uniform for work so I don't require anything like that, so in my wardrobe the role of a blazer sometimes takes the form of a fitted vest or a biker jacket - I can dress these items up a bit or down eg. I wore my black biker style jacket to a funeral once over a biege sweater dress with long boots - it was pretty cold that day so very weather appropriate and because my biker jacket is pretty plain and somewhat fitted I looked quite conservative. I hope this helps you in considering how you might apply her principles to your style)

The black dress is one of my favorites. It is so simple and elegant. Just wow! The suit dress and jacket combo makes me want to get one like that. I have many of the same items in my own wardrobe, minus anything white. On the whole, I don’t like prints for two reasons: most of the prints are granny prints, and prints tend to add volume to my figure (even though I am fairly thin). I really like navy, but because it is so close to black, I tend to choose black instead. For blue, I will select a lighter shade, like royal blue. I think I have been dressing in the French style for many years but wasn’t aware of it. My mom also dressed that way and was always very particular about what she wore. Also, a classic style is more cost efficient long term.

I'm glad you mentioned dark blue jeans and white jeans. I take it that the French do not like distressed (i.e., torn) jeans. They do not look chic in my opinion.
@susie98935 жыл бұрын
You occasionally see younger French women sporting that look but they always carry it off with style - you'll begin to notice how they accessorise or create an elegant silhouette that somehow elevates the look, also in photos I've seen the distressed jeans in question are pretty conservative - just the knees. Personally I just don't see the point of distressed jeans but I take a practical view a) the item already has holes in it so it's not gonna last as long and b) if you're gonna wear long pants, well I do that for warmth so having holes in them rather defeats the purpose imo (it's like those ridiculous cold shoulder jumpers/sweaters - I really love that style, had several tops like that before it got trendy, but what works great to keep you cool but cover your arms a bit in a summer top is utterly pointless for a winter top - this is why I'll always prioritise practicality over fashion!)
