As a mother of two grown children (they are perfect, of course) and a grandmother of two (they are even more perfect), I am so happy to see women grow to the point where they see children as optional, not necessary. I know many women who had children because they felt obligated. They just followed the culture...and never thought they had an option. I am a woman who supports women doing what's best for them. Live your own truth.

I totally agree! Its such an old perspective to think that having or not children is a "competition" between what is best or not....its a personal, private and respectful decision. I have 5 kids and I love it, AND I have family and friends childfree too....we respect and love each other!❤

I see this topic relatable to all people. I recognize that my husband of 30 years had been struggling to find himself for his entire adulthood. He left our marriage abruptly with total lack of grace and now seems to have no problem living his authentic self. I have struggled to find a true sense of self after his abrupt and painful exit. I am now finding my way four and a half years later. I do have 3 grown children and I could not appreciate them more, however, living an inauthentic life, doing the chronologically correct thing by marriage house kids, I cannot say that raising my family was a joyful experience. That period of my life was riddled with struggle on all fronts. I am now committed to live as my genuine and authentic self.
@marypelliottАй бұрын
I am child-free and it is right for me. I must say, though, I have a few dear women friends who are happily married, who do NOT pour themselves into their husband's, who are good enough mothers. None of them are co-dependent people pleasers. That seems to be the key. And they are happy and creative.

@kateoconnor8663Ай бұрын
@kfl153 Bingo you are so right about language! I have struggled for so long to admit my childfreeness in a way that doesn't come across as validating society's "childless" view of child free women as being "less" , and not quite making the mark of being a true woman, and being something less! Thankfully I have let go of the Mother's Day yuck of all of the above and I now embrace the knowledge that my spiritual path in this incarnation was not to be a mother and instead to experience completely different challenges....that's very liberating.

"... women pour their lives into their partners. They literally exchange literal years of their life by pouring into their partner, uplifting their partner who will then thrive and succeed and prosper and women will wilt in the giving which is what we are taught because we are supposed to be the giving tree..." (M. Gilbert 12:43-13:04). This sums up my late twenties, all of my thirties, and up to my mid forties after which he - thankfully - left me, and I was able to reclaim my life. Almost 6 years later, I am at a crossroads deciding what I truly want for myself.

I absolutely love listening to my two favorite women: Marie Forleo and Liz Gilbert. Thank you, Marie, for consistently hosting the best conversations with inspiring people. Liz, I’ve read all your books, and Big Magic is one I return to again and again. Marie, your mantra, "Everything is figureoutable," has become a lifeline for me-I repeat it every time I face an obstacle, and it truly feels like magic. Writing every morning brings clarity, and my journal, which I’ve titled My Morning Coffee with Kyle-named after my son who passed away-has been a source of healing. In fact, two of my books were born from those morning reflections. Thank you both for empowering so many women, including me, to keep moving forward and believing in what's possible.

This was such a wholesome conversation from many different angles. I like how she doesn't conform to beauty standards because I also don't. I have been shaving my hair for the last 10 years and the statement from women complimenting me and then mentioning their weird shaped head is so true/familiar - I hear it all the time. I am 56 years and look like I am in 40's only because of my healthy habits not trying too hard to stay young. I don't let my phone have control over me, in particular, social media. I better listen to more of Liz's interviews - she is my kinda woman. Thanks Marie for the interview

Great discussion, I love Liz Gilbert and of course Marie... and I think there are so many women who will benefit from this, however I do have to say that while I also felt that dread around having children, and I hated the baby and toddler phase, they are teenagers now and I absolutely LOVE them. I think this conversation would benefit from looking at the fact that "a baby" is a temporary thing. I am 52 now and my son and daughter are remarkable young people that I love to be with. So perhaps we need to talk about whether we are just baby-averse or whether we really do not want to raise a new generation of adults.

You may want different things at different times in your life but the hardest thing is sometimes you don't realize what you want or even need till lator on in life. E.g A friend of mine worked real hard for 20 years and loved what he did and set himself up financially but he now says he wished he had kids earlier on in his life and had spent more time with his wife and family members. So yes sometimes you do things that feel right at the time to you but lator you may/do chamge as you grow. Never regret anything cause sometimes you dont know, what you dont know. I think ultimately nothing else is more important than the connection you have with yourself and with others especially with those close to you.❤

Love what Liz says about her digital Sabbath. I LOVE it when I forget my phone, don't check it for hours and hours, and take days away from not only my phone but also my computer, the TV, all media, etc. It's AMAZING - and I've learned that I need more days like this in my life. And, of course her talk about having/not having kids. Prior to getting married, I said I *didn't* want to have kids. Like, it was so expected of me (for all the reasons Liz mentioned) and I found that to be utterly repugnant. Then, around age 34, my clock started ticking (biological). Yet, every time I considered having kids with my former spouse, I would fly into utter panic and terror - that to have kids would NOT be the wise thing. I did this for years before I left the relationship. Sometimes I think if I'd been with the "right" person, maybe the outcome would have been different. Alas, am 44 and having kids is no longer an option for me. AND I'm happier and healthier than I've EVER been (and, have more money than when I was married...)

It occurs to me that our “programs” that we run about money are so similar to those exhausting and guilt-ridden programs regarding food or career or parenting or productivity. Thank you Marie, thank you Liz. I got so many goldnuggets from this interview. 1) My daughter who is 15 really does not want kids yet my answer has so often been "it will change". Feeling so guilty now. I have this one daughter and I really want a grandchild one day, so selfish. I am going to have a serious talk with her and make it clear IT IS HER CHOICE. I am always underlining that but in THIS area I really have to admit I have been manipulative, even if my happiest moment was when she was born etc so what? Apparently we are all different. I guess the penny about that finally dropped this time. 2) I wanna shave my head. Only yesterday I was looking at really short hairdo, it's a sign! 3) Love the meeting with ideas!! Brilliant!!! I will try to do that. I have so many ideas that I am drowning. Am working on a book on horse training, another on breathing and the third is a young teen book. Its of course paralizing although i am putting in the work. 4) much much more. Thanks and God bless!!

I relate so much to having a body that cannot physically live a lie. I once had a job so bad that for a whole month I could literally barely breathe -- it was like I was slurping air from a straw. Could not figure out what it was. I deep-cleaned for mold, got an expensive air purifier, took allergy meds even though I didn't know what it could, elimination diet to feel out for allergies. Nothing worked. Until I went to the doctor with heart palpitations and they said it was just anxiety and there's some pills they could prescribe for that. But I knew that anxiety wasn't out of nowhere -- I dreaded dealing with certain coworkers every day. That night I was like, am I really gonna go on medication just to keep dealing with these a-holes? No. As soon as I made the decision to quit, all the breathing problems instantly stopped. It really was like my body was gonna choke me from the inside if I didn't quit and move onto the next chapter. (Which was a really fulfilling creative dream!)

Now, that’s not true that unmarried women live longer happier life. Truth is that our callings are different and the sooner we realize our callings, the sooner we will live more fulfilled life.

Sure, it’s not “always” the case for every unmarried and childfree woman, but she’s stating statistics of longevity and mental health. I think the big factor for happiness is having choice and control over how you want to live your life.

This was such an incredible interview for so many reasons. I resonate with so much of what was shared and how Liz views and lives life. I'm in awe of the guidance in this. the message of being greedy for our time is so powerful. I thank you both for all your time and energy giving us this wonderful listen. I love you both dearly

Thanks Marie for bringing Liz back. Liz, I love you with all my heart. Your voice calms me down. Your eyes are full of joy, they look like they can smile. I talk to God too. You’ve helped me learn that God always answers except when you ask “why?” I started to ask God for guidance, instructions, the how, the when, the what. God always answers these questions. Thank you thank you thank you! Also you helped me understand a part of my “shadow” (Carl Jung). I am a gay man, who has always tried to be a good person and the idea of being a bad person has been unbearable. My feminine side. I feel I am going well on integrating my shadow. Loving myself more and more. That wasn’t the case few months ago! OH MY GOD!

8:41 My body has not been true to me. I've just learned this. However, there are therapies I'm doing that are changing this. For example, hyper-vigilance causes a fight-or-flight response when none is needed. It's incredibly freeing to "teach" my body to respond in a more natural way.
@TeamForleo4 ай бұрын
We love how you articulated this, Tammy - that it can be freeing to work with your body in a natural way. We appreciate this share, and you, so very much.

I am so blessed to have 4 grown up children and I would not want to be without them. Could it be that if you don’t have children you don’t know what you are missing out on. Everyone should have a right to choose but let’s not forget how precious our children are and how lucky we are to be able to be Mothers. I consider it a privilege and a blessing and I would not want to be without my children or family.

I am so happy you’ve had a great experience. And I believe many women feel the same. But to think ALL women would feel this way is not the case. Sadly I knew one woman who did everything to have the 2 children she had. She raised them and grew to dislike them immensely. This is so sad but it happens. I haven’t had children and whilst I wanted them, my life is not diminished by not having them and I’m grateful to have the life I have. I have girlfriends with and without. We women are not a homogeneous group of beings. We’re individuals who have the right to choose or grow to love what life has given us.

Liz Gilbert.. the forever freest spirit ever. I'm not a traveler..I'm a mom of a special needs boy who needs me all the time.. and I have been married for 17 years... to my best and most annoying friend but I will find a way to be "greedier". So inspiring. My life is so different but I always aspire...to have an ounce of her spirit and freedom and insight.

It’s important that you do t have children if you don’t want them. My life has so much joy because of my children. But if it doesn’t bring you deep joy, don’t do it. Children aren’t accessories. End rant.

I sensed at a young age that I did not desire to be a mother. I saw how hard it was on my mother, grandmother, and all women in my sphere. I saw that women were getting saddled with a massive responsibility before they had time to explore their own growth. Age 50 now and never regretted my decision. I would posit to young women that there is no reason to date, marry, have children before age 30. Young men have nothing to offer young women except for pregnancy risk. Young men also need time to mature and develop and explore their own growth. Young people, don’t date until 30! 30 is young! But 30 gives you time to grow and learn who you are and what you want.
