As discussed weed is a down-regulator, so rather than being anxious and over-thinking, when I roll a little high I feel more in the moment, I have less ego and I feel more connected to my body. I do what feels right rather than thinking. Mostly it's just enjoyable, so when I'm feeling down and really can't be arsed to train that day it can be a little motivator. So yes it may not be performance enhancing but for me it's experience enhancing.

when I was doing some deep research years ago, I found that weed was listed as a PED for it's recovery benefits. Looked for it again recently, to no avail

Just at the beginning of the video, and so I'll share my preconceptions about this subject, but I am also looking forward to your points on this subject. I have found your podcast interesting, and that you bring up valid points/opinions. I am a brand new white belt, having just passed my two month point. I've been taking it quite seriously, averaging 22 hours of training each month. having 50 minute, 60 minute, and 90 minute classes, this ends up being 5 or 6 classes a week. My 43 year old body was in pain from this, and at the beginning of my jiu jitsu, I found that I over-extended myself financially. Buying two gi's and a no-gi outfit left me with almost no extra money for the month. At this point, I was already low on my concentrates, as I am a medical cardholder and use a desktop vaporizer since I choose to protect my lungs. Years ago, I would smoke blunts and bongs, but as a scuba diver I would notice the effect on my mouth, throat and lungs. It has been years since I have smoked like that, and a desktop vaporizer not only gets me higher, but uses less weed, saving me money. Around the end of my first month, I was able to afford some more of my medication, and I found that it helped me significantly. I was much more relaxed during class, and I found that my recovery and sleep were both improved. It isn't for everyone, but having an injury from the military, I have found that it is the best pain relief for my back. I dislike opiates and similar painkillers, but it also helps me focus. This helps through those attention deficit moments, like standing in front of the fridge wondering what I was there for. Overall, I feel that weed has helped me hit my stride, getting slightly more comfortable in my training sessions. That was a lengthy preface, but shows that I am looking forward to your content.

I fall into that category of a 40 plus lifestyle jiu jitsu practitioner who does enjoy indulging before practice. Thanks for the great show and please keep the episodes coming... I really appreciate this conversation guys. Really helpful and honest. Can you do another one about alcohol and weekend warriors and etc (unless you already have one I don't know about). I know that marijuana/weed is more DIRECTLY tied to some/a part of jiu jitsu culture, but I'd be curious to hear your opinions/experiences/lifestyle with it (alcohol) from the perspective of physio/research/lifestyle/philosophy/bjj/athletes/years of experience. I think it would be really helpful!

2:15 - You lost me here. Saying it’s rubbish and that the science doesn’t support the fact that medical grade marijuana helps you sleep and helps your pain is straight up ignorance. The science supports exactly that. It’s helped people get off anti depressants, helped people have a better quality of life.

2.5 mg edible made me more relaxed and creative and overall better at BJJ. I'm able to channel that mindset and get a similar effect without it because I can remember what it feels like. For people familiar, this is considered a tiny dose. It's like how you can drink a beer and be more confident and conversational.

I have a problem with how the cannabis industry sells edibles. Living in a recreational/medical state, I have had discussion with dispensary managers to try and fix this exact issue, but they tell me that nobody cares, nobody asks for it. Once they sell edibles, most places sell it as a blanket indica or sativa edible. We are past those days. Each and every strain feels different to different people. Treating this like medication, each edible would be a different strain. If you enjoy Congo Kush to help you sleep, then finding a rice krispie treat using just that strain is a better way to understand how it will affect you, because when some people say they can't handle it, they just need a different strain or different dosage. The industry will change eventually, in my opinion.

As someone with ADHD my mind goes at a 1000 miles per hour and so weed does help with that if I want to relax. But my medication is way more effective, the only problem is that I can’t relax whilst I’m on my medication, I have to be doing something. And form my personal experience if you do something where you have to think about what you are doing, weed is only going to hinder you But you definitely shouldn’t smoke it within 7 hours before you go to sleep, the quality of your sleep goes down (you don't go into rem sleep)

Weed affects everyone differently I use it for medicinal purposes so of course I’m going to use it when I roll as well as the occasional ashwaganda supplement or pre workout. I don’t think everyone does it just people who already smoke a lot of weed. It’s good to go without smoking as well, but for me I choose to smoke probably 70% of the time. Weed isn’t that detrimental to your body as some of the stuff the majority of people take in in their day to day diet so if we want to start comparing lifestyles I’m open to that lol.

I am not sure if it was the brown belt being high or him wanting to injure me, but 3rd class in, my ACL possibly torn by a heal hook. I come to find out the brown belt constantly is high.. I do not smoke weed but reaction time or knowing when to let go of an arm or leg can be possibly compromised. . Opinions, thoughts would be appreciated

7:30 so weed inhaled/smoked bypasses the liver and goes right into your bloodstream. I get the point you're trying to make though. Anything inhaled or injected will go right into your blood stream and bypass the liver's "first pass metabolism" effect which is why people shoot up or snort or smoke certain drugs.

Been smoking weed for a decade or so, jitz for about 3. I didn't walk through the gym door on my first day until I smoked. Definitely not a performance enhancer but definitely felt more creative bcz of how spaced I was. Got my blue belt a year ago and typically get 4th in comp. But I don't smoke on comp day. Problem?

There’s no right answer here. It helps me in class and tournaments but some people it makes them worst ( I only eat edibles). I feel better during my workouts but some it makes them lazy. Is it Sativa, Indica, or hybrid? How much are smoking or eating? Are you smoking or eating edibles? How does your body and/or mind react? This isn’t even all the factors. Even the research isn’t perfect. Best bet is to see how it works for you. Don’t listen too much on the pro or con side of it, judge for yourself.
