Great actress of great Germany. I saw her for the first time in the film " Die Frau meiner Traume" in my younger years :) and remembered forever. Movies with her participation, songs and dances are beautiful! Thank you, jeanchriborn, for a wonderful clip.

Marika Rökk, the Queen of Pirouettes! Born November, 3th 1913 in Kairo, died May, 16th 2004 in Baden/ Wien. She danced with age 60, 70, 80 and longer. Phenomenal Women, unforgettable. In Germany the People says - we don’t need Eleanor Powell, we have Marika Rökk.

One of Marika's best films, the songs are still evergreens.

This movie had quite a history. At first the Hebbels who was in charge of deciding which movie were accepteable to german audience forbid demonstration of this movie basing on the fact that it stars Hungarian actress rather than German, and that there was zero nazi propoganda in entire movie and not even a hint at nazi superiority. So movie was forbidden at first and eventualy did come out after significant editing and cuting and much liked by both german as well as world audience.

I can see why this film was approved and released in December 1942. Things were starting to get ugly in the real world. The Southern Russian front is on the verge of collapsing due to that City that lies west of the Volga River. Plus the civilian German population knows that something is VERY wrong. They heard it from soldiers coming home on leave (Not from that particular spot) but from areas close enough. Hell the German Radio even acknowledged that they lost an entire army in February 1943. The first time Germany admitted defeat...

Bin gleicher Meinung!

Fascinating. So even while Nazi Germany was engaged in an epic battle against the USA and its "decadent" culture, movies like this were being produced in Germany which look EXACTLY like American films. Marika even gets to do a short bit of scat singing, invented and popularized by black Americans - how'd the Nazis allow THAT?

interesting isn’t it. this is my first time seeing a german film, and from this era. if the lyrics were in english you’d believe that this was an MGM number from 1936. i’m shook. but it’s very crazy how the Black american influence is seen around the world. i am still impressed with the numbers however, she’s a great dancer. and the production is great. makes me wonder how german directors were in comparison to those in America, such as Busby Berkeley. crazy to imagine the horrendous war crimes occurring at the time of the film!
@hebneh3 жыл бұрын
@@heygirlspodcast The Nazi higher-ups admired the technical polish of Hollywood films, so they obviously approved of German movies looking and sounding similar. Still, the sequence when Marika literally pulls away from her Aryan dance partner and their traditional waltz to join the modern-style showgirls seems like something the Nazis would not approve of.
