This was the song that started a life long obsession with Marillion. I bought the album (Fugazi) then Script. I saw them live twice: Leicester de Monfort then Liverpool a little later. Still my favourite band of all time (Fish era obviously)

"Pavlovian en-slaver at the cash-till ring of success". It's a word play on the work of the psychologist Pavlov who conditioned dogs to salivate at the sound of a bell using food reward. Not including 'ring' makes the quote meaningless.

For a time I thought the line was "Unleash a stranger from a cliff" rather than a kiss. I wish I were right. But what a song regardless. Prog lightly constrained by a pop format is maybe the best prog of all.

OK how do I say this without sounding like a dick? I grew up listening to Genesis, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Camel, ELP, Rush, and witnessed prog rock being destroyed by punk and new wave. Then I watched this video claiming that Marillion was the new age saviors of prog. Sorry but prog is not pop synthesizer music. I was told that "Grendel" was the new "Suppers Ready". I did not hear it. Fish totally sounds like Gabriel but that is about as close as this band comes to Genesis.

It was usually commented that he sang like Peter Gabriel, so Gabriel must sing like a frog too. But in answer to your question, he got his nickname because he used to spend a lot of time in the bath before he joined the band. And his real name was Derek Dick, so by his own admission he desperately needed a nickname.

@@TheAlistairDick He sounded more like Phil Collins on some songs and more like Gabriel on others in my opinion, but he was usually compared to Gabriel by critics, both vocally and for his performance style. The music journalist David Hepworth described his voice as a "conflation of Roger Daltrey and Peter Gabriel". Peter Hammill of Van De Graf Generator was also a big influence on him.
