When this song came out there was nothing else like it. Marilyn Manson was an unknown band, and the original by Annie Lennox had been a staple of pop radio for years. It was a classic song. Manson brought the song to life. It was like he scraped all the pretty colors off the original song to reveal the dark core of the lyrics and message underneath. I thought it was perfect, and I've loved the song and video ever since. Very original aesthetics for the time.

I think the story was that Marilyn was drunk and heard the pop song and it to him sounded like a abuse song full of gaslighting and such. Marilyn while drunk heard the pop song but it came off as this in his head, that's why Marilyn Manson (and the spooky kids) are amazing.

The guitarist is Scott Putesky he went by the stage name Daisy Berkowitz, without him there wouldn’t be any Marilyn Manson. He wrote all of the music in the beginning before he had a falling out with Brian ( aka Manson) and Trent Reznor. He unfortunately passed away from cancer in 2017. Great guy! He should get way more credit than he ever got. R.I.P. Scott🖤🖤🙏

What does the singer from NIN have to do with Marilyn Manson?
@HaienTwitch
@HaienTwitch Жыл бұрын
@@ireallyreallyhategoogle Well... there is a few things. They had a falling out, but Reznor discovered [Marilyn Manson, the band] and produced their 1994 debut album, as well as their 1995 EP Smells Like Children, with which Manson and his bandmates broke onto the scene thanks to their thrashing cover of the 1983 Eurythmics hit, "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)." He also produced the band's 1996 album Antichrist Superstar, which solidified Manson's place in the hallowed annals of rock history. Manson did a interview with Reznor really early when he was working for a magazine NIN was much of his inspiration and sound earlier.

as Manson is just a year older then myself, we grew up listening to a lot of the same music, which is probably why most of his cover songs he does are from the 80's groups, like Eurythmics "sweet Dreams"' Soft Cell "Tainted Love", Depeche Mode "Personal Jesus", Gary Numan "Down in the Park", and Ministry "Stigmata" while these songs are all great on their own he did a great cover of them as well, but the song he is most famous and known for would have to be his song "The Beautiful People", yes he is a bit of a freak especially his videos but his music does have a very deep meaning in it, when you do a deep dive into it

Love the way you describe his music and his vocal range which is phenomenal! I've been listing to his music since the mid 90's. He' not only a singer but a songwriter, actor and painter. He is 53 years old but doesn't look it.His music has been used in numerous horror films. He also very intelligent. Sweet Dreams song is about inner thoughts and realistic hope of a person's perception of how they want to live their life in a perfect scenario.

BTW, this is known as "Shock rock" and Marilyn Manson took it to a new level. Marilyn Manson made a lot enemies, with their image, their antics, expression, views and lyrical content. Christian groups went after him/the band. Politicians went after him/the band. They would get banned from playing at events. People tried to blame him/the band for the Columbine High School massacre. He did a lot of crazy stuff on stage, some of it explicit if you know what I mean. Backstage stories, look them up. Private events, look them up. Then there is personal life and allegations which you can look up as well. He, his band, definitely shocked people. Also check out Alice Cooper, "The Godfather of Shock Rock". Pretty tame in comparison to stuff like MM. You may have heard "School's Out" in movies, or TV shows. I've always liked "Poison", which came out in the late 80s but there are plenty to choose from. He's been at it for 54 years according to wiki.

I remember this music video debuting on MTV in 1995 and my expression was exactly like yours back then 😲It was the freakiest thing I had ever seen at the time... The original song was an 80's synth pop hit by the Eurythmics. Marilyn Manson had been signed from Florida by Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor, who produced their 1994 debut album 'Portrait of an American family'... it got some MTV airplay, but wasn't a big commercial hit at the time... 'Sweet dreams' was not even on that album - it was released on a remix EP in 1995 titled 'Smells like children'... and that actually went gold (half million copes sold) in the US because of the success of this music video. Of course, then critics asked in 1996 if Marilyn Manson could score a hit without a cover song... That came w/ the single 'The beautiful people' from the concept album 'Antichrist Superstar' in 1996, which became a platinum success. Marilyn Manson had arrived. Tragically, the guitarist on this record (Daisy Berkowitz, aka Scott Putesky) passed away in 2017. He was fired from Manson's band in 1996 after playing on 'Antichrist Superstar'.

While this cover pushed them into the mainstream I have to say their best work imo went into Antichrist Superstar, Mechanical Animals & Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death, phew) They're just fantastic albums. Which brings me to Nothing Records and Nine Inch Nails. Surely you've heard NIN Bisscute, no? Pretty Hate Machine, Broken, The Downward Spiral & The Fragile are my faves. Which brings me to my favorite band of all time, the one and only Skinny Puppy who were among the original pioneers of Electro-industrial and in part Industrial rock which led to groups like NIN and Marilyn Manson among many others. Skinny Puppy may be a hard listen for a lot of people, especially my favorite albums ever Too Dark Park and Last Rights. These albums are beautifully chaotic. There's just nothing else, that I know of, like them. SP got me out of my comfort zone musically and pushed me to expand on what I considered was "real music". They changed everything for me. Funny thing is, it's because of them that I love so much 80s pop music, but Skinny Puppy came about because of cEvin Key's dissatisfaction with that 80s pop sound his band Images in Vogue was going for. Anyways, sorry for the blah blah blah, and looking forward to this reaction.

Subsequently, Antichrist Superstar, Mechanical Animals and Holy Wood are when Manson was super out of control with his drug addiction. While it was devastating to him as a *person,* the effect on it had on the quality of his art was profound. He's (more) sober these days, and unfortunately... you can really hear it in his music. Other than a few odd bangers, most of what he's been putting out these days has been less than amazing.

@EnervatedSociety
@EnervatedSociety 2 жыл бұрын
@@Mickeymouse7727 As people say, there's no accounting for taste so have it but personally I can't take most of Portrait of an American Family seriously. Honestly I find it boring. That's my subjective opinion. Side note: Both MM and Puppy were unhappy with Roli Mosimann as a producer. MM chose Reznor/Nothing studios to finish Portrait of an American Family. It was probably too late. 🤣That obviously carried over to Antichrist Superstar and it explains why it's a superior production imo. Sean Beavan, Dave Ogilvie, Trent Reznor working with Marilyn Manson. Come on now, that's a superior team and imo they made a superior album.
@Mickeymouse7727
@Mickeymouse7727 2 жыл бұрын
@@EnervatedSociety Yeah definitely a taste thing. The production is definitely better on Anti-Christ but I like but I like the beats and the intensity of portrait better. 1st concert I ever saw they were touring that album and it was so raw in your face.

For me it is very satisfying to see someone react to something of terror 👏🏻 😂 There are many versions of this song but my favorite will always be this one by Marilyn Manson 👌🏻😎

So this video is from 1995 and this song was among his first big hits. He did a live acoustic version of it in 2017 with Tyler Bates on guitar - which was a totally different experience than this older version - you should check it out.

This WAS his first big. It's what put him on the map. Lunchbox, Dope Hat, and Get Your Gunn came before, but didn't get a lot of airplay.

Glad you liked it, and finally got around to Manson. :) They (I'm gonna say they as they are a band) have a lot of great songs, with a big variety in style. Give "The Dope Show", "The Nobodies", "Rock is dead", "The beautiful people" a try. They are some of the most famous ones, but not necessarily the absolute best ones. He, as a singer/vocalist, has a very wide range, as you did pick up on.

My favorite song cover is "Korn- Another Brick in The Wall" live at Sziget 2012.... there is a great jam session at end of song (also great guitarist Munky elevates performance with his solo)
