I've always believed they used Marilyn's style, to promote Whitney when she first came out as a singer and it definitely worked!! " I'm saving all my love" was first recorded by Marilyn as an example, so someone had Marilyn in mind promoting Whitney!!

This is a great song for Marilyn, but it could've been even better --- take it very down-tempo, late-night-in-a-smoky-club-kinda-feel, with a single trumpet through a Harmon mute! :-D (wouldn't have fit the style of Solid Gold, though *chuckle!*)
