Norma Jeane Mortenson (June 1, 1926 - August 4, 1962) was an American actress, model and singer. Famous for playing comedic "blonde bombshell" characters, she became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s and early 1960s and was emblematic of the era's sexual revolution. She was a top-billed actress for only a decade, but her films grossed $200 million (equivalent to $2 billion in 2020) by the time of her death in 1962.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Monroe spent most of her childhood in foster homes and an orphanage; she married at age 16. She was working in a factory during World War II when she met a photographer from the First Motion Picture Unit and began a successful pin-up modeling career, which led to short-lived film contracts with 20th Century Fox and Columbia Pictures. After a series of minor film roles, she signed a new contract with Fox in late 1950. Over the next two years, she became a popular actress with roles in several comedies, and in the dramas Clash by Night and Don't Bother to Knock.
By 1953, Monroe was one of the most marketable Hollywood stars; she had leading roles in the film noir Niagara, which focused on her sex appeal, and the comedies Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and How to Marry a Millionaire, which established her star image as a "dumb blonde". She won a Golden Globe for Best Actress for her work in Some Like It Hot (1959), a critical and commercial success. Her last completed film was the drama The Misfits (1961).
Marilyn's troubled private life received much attention. She struggled with addiction and mood disorders. Her marriages to retired baseball star Joe DiMaggio and to playwright Arthur Miller were highly publicized, and both ended in divorce. On August 4, 1962, she died at just 36 years old from an overdose of barbiturates at her home in Los Angeles. Her death was ruled a probable suicide, although several conspiracy theories have been proposed in the decades following her death.

@@laurence.MusicAndSights Why she married that ogre I will never know. He didn't love or respect her and was just a gold digger and used her. You are right. Miller sucked the life out of Marilyn. Marilyn wore the pants and was the bread winner in that marriage. Joe loved her but wanted a traditional wife to cook and clean. Marilyn's career came first to her and he had to know that before they were married. Their marriage boosted Marilyn's confidence and she was happy for a short period but Joe was jealous that Marilyn was in the spotlight and he was a retired baseball player.

She was so pretty. It's so sad she died young. She would have been the same age as my Late Nanna and as Queen Elizabeth II currently is- 96 (my Nanna died 15 years ago at 81). I wonder what Marilyn would have been like had she lived to be an old lady...

The pictures of her childhood tell me another thing. She was not a poor orphanage girl as the mainstream media wanted to portraying her. Because she generate a lot of money to the film industry, magazines, etc. She was very well kept in all aspects. I believe the truth is still hiding somewhere.

Well she wasn't out of the street and completely homeless but she first spent time in an orphanage and then lived with up to a dozen foster familes. It's likely that at least some of the foster familes did care about her but she never had a truly secure loving family. She had to get married at 16 to prevent her from going back into foster care. Hollywood always embellishes everything of course. From the photos and home videos of her as a young teen it seems there were some happy moments and times for her, that it wasn't all trauma and nightmare.

True..I think there was some aspects of mental illness with her mother. She seems off in some ways but back in the sexist day the guys all liked that but would this behavior appeal to guys in today's age?

MM gave huge amount of support to Ella Fitzgerald & Ella said MM was ahead of her time . Also MM was known to be incredibly generous to friends & then charities . She was incredibly well read. As Arthur Miller said “ if it was modern times she would of got the psychological support she needed as she was abused from a v young age , eg she was married off @ 16 to be free of still being in a orphanage. Norma Jean was multi faceted, beautiful , intelligent & compassionate
