Such a wonderful video (part one as well) .I am a front ensemble tech for a high school and have the hardest time teaching my kids the physical importance of proper technique. I hope you don't mind if I use the information in your video to do a lesson on percussion injury.

I usually massage my hands before I play. If I'm cold I run them under warm (not hot because it causes swelling) water.

Hey, these series are amazing! I have a question: i was practicing hard during quarantine. But i dont think i was smart enough. After 3 months of practicing on the marimba for 4-5 hours everyday without any breaks, i started to feel this light discomfort in my elbow. After playing for like 2 hours this 'pain' would subside, and i could normally keep going, but after 3 days of feeling that light discomfort i stopped, because i was afraid it would get worse. Now i am still taking a break, only practicing with my left arm, which is fine. What do You suggest doing? I feel that it got better, i just dont know when and how i should come back to practicing.

Honestly, I would take 3 weeks off. Practice some piano in the meantime. Tendon injuries have a slow build-up, but they also have a slow wind-down. Take it easy so you don't get a permanent injury! If the problem still persists, see a sports injury doctor.

These videos were super helpful thanks a lot! I just have a question, have you ever run in to the feeling of needing to crack your knuckles a lot after practicing too much? I'm not sure if it's related to that, but after a long weekend of band, my knuckles feel stiff and I constantly and pulling them out/bending them different ways, and there is starting to be a dull pain. Do you have any experience like this, is it just normal swelling? Thank you!

Well cracking your knuckles have shown no ill effects. One guy set out to prove this by only cracking one hand's knuckles for years. There was no size difference or other health effects. However I would caution pulling on them (can stretch the tendon) Always be sure to down a lot of stretches before you start playing and don't overdo it!

What are some hand stretches you can do to warm-up for typing and playing mallets? Also, do you have a video detailing correct technique so we don't have these injuries?
@Marimbalogy4 жыл бұрын
I'd like to think all the technique videos touch on that :) As far as stretches, there's not much to it. You just slowly bend back your wrist and hold, then bend the other way and hold. I like to massage my fingers as well. The most important thing isn't actually stretching, but warming up slowly and without tension.

@@Marimbalogy alright awesome! I was looking through your channel for technique videos specifically for two mallets and I was only able to find four-mallet ones. I found two mallet ones where you shared some exercises but I was unable to find exactly where you taught the technique, how to hold mallet, wrist orientation...etc. Thank you!
