I can feel your sentiments on low budget High school programs. I teach percussion at a high school in Indiana. I’m their full time instructor but, I donate 90% of my time. I only get paid during marching season. I also give free lessons after school to anyone who wants to learn. I currently have 1 student auditioning for the Cavaliers. I enjoy what I do and I appreciate this resource. Yes, it’s a resource. Please keep it up!

It's great that they have you! Although you shouldn't be working for free. Do they have a booster program that can help cover the cost of lessons? Never hurts to ask. I asked for a budget increase for 4 years at my school until they finally gave us one ;)

Marimbalogy we do! As you know though it’s expensive to operate as our budget has to cover the entire music department and the auditorium. Hopefully as we grow a regular paycheck can become a reality!

You have a very engaging personality. Thank you for the video, although I'm not a percussionist, I could really relate to what you said in this and the other 2 videos on audition tips.

Okay the first half of this story (when hes talking about switching to percussion) IS LITERALLY MY EXACT STORY! The small school and the small band is just like me and to say that I was obsessed with snare drum is honestly an understatement. To say that I didn’t have any business learning a 4 mallet piece is also an understatement. Luckily my family WAS able to afford some private lessons for me and I’m coming along great! Love these vids!

Sweet! Are you auditioning this year? If so, send me a video if you want some feedback!

I joined our front ensemble and switched from synthesizer to vibes after our front tech offered to teach even non keyboard players 2 and 4 mallet. I really enjoy it but I still play clarinet for school band and piano independently

You're telling me :) I've since learned that there are much nicer percussion professors out there who are more sympathetic to kids who come from poor households and haven't taken private lessons before.

Well, using a Malletech for an audition IS pretty cruel if you ask me, this way almost 50% of the players are put in disconfort😅

This story sounds familiar, but I think, I'm getting confused with another story you told when I was in your class in middle school, either way it's funny

I hated auditions. I guess ideally... maybe you’d audition for a non-top choice school first to work out all the kinks? Cray. Great job persisting!
