3 жыл бұрын

Following Novak Djokovic's surprise defeat to Kei Nishikori in the first semifinal, the cognoscenti reached a quick consensus: Roger Federer was going to win this tournament. His task was straightforward: beat Marin Cilic in the semifinals and stop Nishikori in the final. He seemed destined to secure a sixth US Open title. Federer owned a 5-0 career head to head record over Cilic. The title seemed to be within his grasp.
But Cilic proceeded to play the best match of his career. From start to finish he was devastatingly potent. At 1-2 in the first set, Federer served at 40-0, missed a forehand that he directed inside-in, and then lost the next four points. That was a critical lapse. Cilic won 87% of his first serve points in that set. At 5-3, he unhesitatingly held at love. He broke once in the second set and served that one out at 5-4, holding at 15 for a two sets to love lead.
Cilic was broken once in the third set but was now unassailable. He won 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. In the three crucial set-ending games, Cilic allowed Federer only one point. The 6-foot-6 inch Croatian is frequently a fragile competitor, prone to nerves in tight matches, likely to fold when it counts the most. Not so in this showdown with Federer. He was magnificent. It was strikingly reminiscent of Marat Safin's masterpiece in taking apart Pete Sampras in the 2000 US Open final. As was the case with Sampras in that instance, Federer was in many ways a spectator at his own tennis match; he never really had a chance.

This is what I love about Cilic's play. Win or lose, serve or return, his shot selection has gotta be the most aggressive of anyone on tour. Every shot he takes either damages the opponent, or goes out. Never keeps it neutral. When he's on, it looks so devastating.

he was actually even better at the AO 2018 if you ask me, however circumstances have stopped him from taking that title (which circumstances? namely, closing the roof in final match by a last minute decision. Marin prepared outdoors for the final, while Roger prepared indoors. whether Roger got info what was going to be the decision we'll never know, however to make it a last minute decision wasn't fair at all, both players should have been announced what was going to happen to avoid the scenario; as a result, Marin had to restring his racquets during the match fo a different tension since balls were flying off his racquet too fast in the first set - they were strung for outdoors conditions and a much higher temperature)

Cilic should be entitled as „the most decent tennis player“ on earth.
@davd1986
@davd1986 3 жыл бұрын
He is more than decent, he's talented, already had success as a 18 year old, beating Fernando Gonzalez, among others. He should have won more than one slam, he choked way too many big matches, when he was up a set and a break against Murray more than one occasion, choked against Federer at Wimbledon in 2016 when he was up two sets and had match points in the 4th. He played a terrible final against Federer in 2017. Took Djokovic to 5 sets at Wimbledon in 2014, when Djokovic won the tournament. Against Murray he was up a set and two breaks in the QF of USO in 2012, lost that one and Murray went on to win the title. He choked against Murray in the AUS open in 2010 SF, was up a set and break, choked a first set lead in the 2012 Wimbledon against Murray. Choked against Del Potro in the 2009 USO QF, he was up, again, a set and had chances to go up two breaks in the 2nd set and choked. Del Potro crushed Nadal in the Semis and beat Federer in 5 sets in the final. I am not saying that he would have won all those tournaments had he won all those matches he choked, but surely wouldn't have only one GS. He's a player that can play on any surface, has a great serve, great groundstrokes, especially the forehand, moves extremely well for a guy that's 6'6 and he's well above average at the net and has good touch. His problem is mental toughness and closing matches out. Not only has he choked matches against the top players, but he's also lost close matches that he was close to winning against lesser players as well.

Roger was already having a tough time after the match against Monfils. But there's nothing to take away from Marin. In my opinion, this Marin could go toe to toe with any Federer. The court looked fast here, and I've never seen any 2-handed backhand player making better advantage of that and go all out on the offensive, against a player who's regarded as one of the most successful offensive players of all time. Kudos to this Marin, we need him back

@@jonbonesmahomes7472 Agreed. And just how many players can we attribute that mental flaw to in this era, past and present? Many players. Very few have the gifts and the psychological durability to sink their teeth into a stellar career. I don't believe that Cilic will ever make another slam final in this lifetime but he did the best he could do in reaching TWO slam finals in which he won one of them. That is a phenomenal achievement in this era of such great players.

@KnowTrentTimoy 3 жыл бұрын
@Ryo Shusuke Excuse me but Cilic WON the U.S. Open crown that year!! That's HARDLY insignificant. Have you won a U.S. Open title recently?? Was that a NO? You NEED to give credit where credit is Earned and Deserved. Roger got his Swiss-Miss behind whooped in this encounter which hardly makes him a god. You might want to tell Novak and Nadal just how "godly" Feddy is. Those two will have LOTS to say about that.

@KnowTrentTimoy 3 жыл бұрын
@Ryo Shusuke I don't know what you're talking about man. No one said anything about Fed losing any respect. You brought that up as some sort of caveat to excuse away this loss. You seem to have a problem with Cilic beating your man love. A god is invincible and Fed hardly played like one in this match. Please talk to Novak and/or Nadal if you have a problem with that.
@KnowTrentTimoy
@KnowTrentTimoy 3 жыл бұрын
@Ryo Shusuke My commentating comment was based on fact. Were you listening to another broadcast? Maybe you got your years confused? There was nothing here about disrespecting anyone. The two commentators definitely leaned towards one direction and barely gave credit to the ACTUAL Winner. I am a fan of Fed and all the greats but I like to give credit to those who make that journey to the crown and are able to BEAT anyone on any given day to do it. Obviously, you're only glued to your god Fed and don't care about anyone else. That's sad. Btw, when was the last time Fed won a slam (Aussie 2018)? He's at 20, Nadal's at 19 and Novak's at 17. I don't think Fed has anymore slam wins in him at this juncture. The new generation of star are here and ready to take the mantle. I'm CERTAIN that Nadal will surpass Fed's 20 anytime now and I wouldn't be surprised if Novak does as well. So, you can tell your man love Fed to go home to his millions and retire quietly.

It's a miracle Rog got back so many that he did. Forehands from Cilic painting the lines. Huge serves on key points for Cilic. Roger was off balance the entire game. He could never really get setup because it was bang, bang tennis. Reminds me of what Lucas Rosol did to Nadal during one Wimbledon where he just went flat, fast and high risk tennis the entire time.

I can't imagine Wimbledon channel even comtemplating showing a match Federer actually lost, other than his loss to Henman in 2001, they were happy to premiere that. In other words, US Open and USTA channels do a great job and mix it up, Wimbedon channel have really overdone it.

Not a huge wimby fan, it’s true they are stuck up but to be fair they did upload Federer final losses to Djokovic and his loss to Berdych in 2010. Still want to see the Stakhovsky 2013 match and the Anderson 2018 one though. Weird considering they have all of Nadals big upsets.

I was in Ashe for both semi-finals, and the two matches were worlds apart. Djokovic lost in hot, humid conditions which were barely tolerable even for the crowd. Then a thunderstorm rolled in, there was a 2-hour break, and when the Cilic-Federer match started, conditions were perfect. The only thing more perfect than the conditions was Marin's game. What stands out in my memory is (1) how decisive Cilic was all throughout, and (2) how deep most of his shots were landing. Roger just got thrashed.

Nishikori was playing at an incredible level too, but he got the hardest opponent in the semi (as Fed was very tired), that's why he got steamrolled in the finals. I'm sure that would have been one of the best matches in history if Kei was quite fresh i

That commentator hopefully disappeared after this game. You can't have an obvious fanboy commentating on his fav player. Denigrating Cilic as "the first time grandslam semi finalist" over and over, calling Nishikori "that guy" that Federer will face and beat easily in the final, and as soon as it looks like Cilic is powering over Federer he starts talking about how tired he probably is.

When Boris Becker was announcing a match recently, I heard him claim that the umpire's chair, like the net, is considered part of the playing field. Therefore, if a ball appears to be going out, but hits the chair and falls back into court -- it is considered "fair" and playable. Look at 43:33. Did the umpire miss this?
@edwardgarner1299
@edwardgarner1299 3 жыл бұрын
After further research, it appears that normally hitting any "permanent fixtures" (including the umpire's chair) renders a ball dead to play -- except there are certain confusing circumstances I don't quite understand where doing so could result in a playable ball (if the balls first bounces in play?).

you guys who think the way Cilic is playing that he is almost unbeatable on this day. Just look at the point at 1:03:00. This proves that a younger Federer would not have missed that shot, he is reaching on this shot because his movement is not what it was when he was in his prime. Prime Federer he would have won a lot more of these rallies because he would not be late or a half step slow getting to them.

Cilic played well, but with just two finals, since 2014, this was as much a sub-par Federer as an in form Cilic. Winning 18 of the last 21 Slams, shows the chasm in consistency between the big three and the rest.

That particular Friday must be the most bizzare day in the history of tennis with both Djokovic and Federer losing their matches in the semi-finals at the same time to absolutely random players, that they should be comfortable dominating...to prove a point how bizzare and unusual this is consider that it's the only time when two members of the big-3 both lost in any a semi-final of grand slam, never happened before, never happened since after (and it's been 9 years ever since then already...) and just like that instead of another Djokovic-Federer final classic, we had Cilic-Nishikori instead...like i said bizzare...

I remember that day, I cried when he faced 2MP against Monfils to days ago, but yeah, the man won at the end. Then Nishikori beats Djokovic and I really thought than Roger could win that tournament, even I saw the hard match in Toronto 3 weeks ago. I also cried in this match LOL, I was a kid, now I can see this match more objetive... what a astonishing performance from Marin, he was unstoppable that day, he looked like a wall and was faster than Roger that day, no more to say, just look how short times Roger used the slice in this match. At the end Roger said: "Well done Marin, I'm happy for you, wish you the best in the final", come on Fedfans, be like Roger and don't be so rude.

he returned outstanding too both against first and second Roger's serve, this is what made most damage to Roger's serving games. besides he played tactically what he should through the whole match: he made a constant pressure from the baseline off both wings, making both winners and UEs, but more important, he never let Roger get into his rhythm. the match finished without Roger ever getting into his rhythm
