Boiling water? When I install new rubber seals on the stanchionsand lower legs of my front suspension I put them in the freezer. Cold makes the seals smaller and thus easier to install. Can imagine it will me the same with these grommets.

Funny thing, I was building these from used bikes 20 years ago. Take a 27" wheel size touring bike, add 700c wheels and 38-42 aspect tires with long reach tektro tourning brakes and go exploring.

In the 1990's we called these hybrids, which were actually quite a pleasant revival of wider 700c tyres after the demise of the touring bike in the following decade. The truth is, the bike industry have tried stuffing this hole between road and mtb for years, and so far they have a track record of totally fucking whatever may have started as a good idea. Hybrids got shitty suspension forks before 29ers made them redundant. Tom Ritchey rides offroad on 33mm tyres, this whole trend of wider tyres and increasingly aggressive geometry for gravel bikes is doing a terrible job at defending themselves as "not a mountain bike". Now they're even coming equipped with suspension and dropper seat posts.

Sweet man. Looks like a fun bike. Last year I cracked the downtube on my full sus carbon bike and a bought a full rigid frame to give me something ride until I got my bike fixed. I've been riding everywhere and have been really loving it. All the trials are scary again! I finally got my full sus bike fixed but I'm still riding the rigid. I put 2.6 tires on it to save my wrists on the chunk. I think I could put some skinner tires on it and do some gravel.

What do you think about this carbon fork. I bought dsx 1, and to be honest, for me this fork looks quite cheep Chinese, especially when I took off wheel and see tiny parts of carbon with a lot amount of poor resin only where you mont wheel axle.

I have to agree with you. I don't know a ton about carbon parts, but I had the same resin pieces where the axle attaches. Time will tell if it holds up. For normal street/gravel riding, I'm sure it's fine. I was a bit concerned hitting some of those drops in this video lol.

Great video Kyle! Thank you for always keeping us informed with your helpful thoughts. Lately, I’ve been having a hard time deciding between Specialized Rockhopper Comp and Trek Marlin 7. I’m planning to ride on mild trails and commuting. And now that I’ve seen this video, deciding one from the three bikes has taken me to another level of dilemma.😂 If you had to choose from Trek Marlin 7, Specialized Rockhopper Comp and Marin DSX1 keeping in mind the components, weight and durability. Which one would you go for?

Thanks Tushar! To answer your question it depends on what your trails look like as well as your skill level. The DSX is going to be the lightest bike of those 3. I think the Rockhopper and Marlin are just over 30 pounds. While the other two come with suspension forks, they aren't necessarily the greatest forks, so if you don't mind extra vibrations transferred to your wrists/hands, then the DSX is probably a better value (components wise), and will also be quicker on pavement. If you are brand new to riding trails, then it might be safer to start with one of the other two as they will provide a little more confidence off road.

I’m new to mountain biking and for starters I was planning on riding in a park nearby my house that has a dedicated off-road track. But as mentioned before, I will also be using my bike for commuting and everyday use, that’s where I will have an advantage of the full carbon fork (if I am not mistaken) on the Marin compared to the suspension fork on the other two. Vibration is also one of the factor that I was keeping in mind. Ultimately, I feel that I’ll have to reprioritise my order of priorities while buying a bike.

Did you have any issues getting the stock rims to setup tubeless? From my understanding the DSX 2 only has tubeless ready rims. I'm considering a DSX 1 and definitely want to setup tubeless but would prefer not to have to buy new rims. I know the tires will need to be replaced regardless though.

Thanks for your video(s), laughed with your ginder app joke - I'm confused about the front thru-axle, noticed yours is inserted on the driveside of the bike, similar to Marin website photos. I have mine inserted from the non drive side, like I thought all bikes were. It's ok both ways?

Answering my own question, no it can't be inserted both ways. Seems the fork has been changed, my DSX came with three mounting points on the fork blade and yes the thru-axle screw is on the drivetrain side, so insert the axle from the other side. Strange change?!

I ordered the axle direct from Wolf Tooth's website. The retaining nut that the axle threads into? The wolf tooth axle didn't come with one, so I'm still using the stock nut that came on the bike. The axle itself is a much nicer piece though. I wanted to replace the rear as well, but apparently they don't make one in blue.

It went together easily in less than an hour. kzbin.infoUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Make sure the front fork is forward or the pedals will hit the front tire. Tires are both a little soft so it needs air before I ride it. The rear wheel didn't come with a clamp regular bolts hold it on. The front had the clamp. No scratches out of box. Rims are a little off with a slight wobble. They could have spent more time with the spoke tool fixing the run out. So far out of the box I'm happy with it. I did replace the pedals with a nice aftermarket set. After riding it a bit my A$$ is a bit sore so I ordered another seat. Overall I'm nearly 60 and didn't ride a bike in 30 years. I like my new 29" Schwinn. It will be used for casual rides with my friend.

Do you think this feels much different than riding an Xtrada 7 when riding on roads/ easy gravel? I have an Xtrada but want something more efficient for commuting with a few gravel trails and maybe try on a few mountain bike trails. But don’t want it if it rides similar to factory Xtrada. They feel somewhat similar, but the DSX has better gearing for top speeds. I got my Xtrada down to 27.5 pounds and my DSX weighed close to 25, so the weight difference wasn't drastic. Love both the bikes, but if you want a truly different experience, I'd suggest going with maybe a drop bar gravel bike.

Hello! I couldn't find much information about the tires either before purchasing the bike. I did notice on Marin's website that they normally will list when their wheels/tires are tubeless compatible, and the DSX makes no mention of it. I discovered the Riddler tires weren't tubeless compatible once I received the bike. WTB tires will have a "TCS" logo stamped on the sidewall if tubeless compatible, and the ones that came on this bike don't have any markings indicating it's tubeless.

Thanks for sharing! I did retape my rims, added tire inserts and tubeless valves (along with tubeless ready tires), and it's been holding up great. It is possible, but I wouldn't recommend doing so with the stock tires as they have a wire bead designed to be used with tubes.

Hello and thank you! I've found it to be pretty comfy. Coming from mostly mountain bikes I do feel like the reach is a bit cramped, but after getting wider bars I've felt better on it. I haven't had any issues with my toes hitting the front wheels. There seems to be enough clearance. This thing is still one of my favorite bikes I own!

How tall are you? I see you got a size large DSX1. I sit towards the bottom end of size large frame according to the Marin size guide. But wondering if I should order a M or L? I’m 176cm tall.

I am 6' tall with a 32" inseam, and the size large can feel a little cramped for me. Especially with the handlebars that came on it because they had a more prominent backsweep. Once I swapped the bars I felt a bit more comfortable. If you prefer a more stretched out riding position I'd say go with the large. If it's too long, you can always put a shorter stem on it!

I would say if you have 32" inseam to go with the Large. Not sure if you're coming from a mountain bike, but this bike felt small to me compared to what I'm used to riding. I think the medium would feel even more tiny.

Quick question - you’ve added specs to make the bike more MTB friendly, what changes would you recommend to take it the other way? ie more road efficient? As a 270lb guy looking for a way to get more exercise that's easy on my feet I have been impressed by this bike. The tires ship with air in the tires, but before you ride you need to pump them up som more, but once you do you can ride with confidence. You'll definitely want to replace the seat if you're going to ride for any real distance, but that's the case with most bikes. I'm loving it and it has given me a hobby from my youth back.

Isnt it kinda dumb to have down bars on something that isn't smooth . Terrain wise . The purpose of flat bars is more control isn't it . Seems not nearly as stable especially on the dirt or trails .. Down bars make zero sense

@@CobraKyle it’s MSRP is $580, it comes with every component branded (Shimano, kenda tyres etc), hydraulic brakes and it only weighs 12.4 kgs. This broke is overpriced and most of the parts are in house branded.

@@riz6656 I'm sure it's a nice bike. I'm looking at a US spec one, and it uses a 2x8 drivetrain, open dropouts, and can't add an internal dropper post. All deal breakers for what I was looking to do. Shimano stuff is fine, but it's using some really low end Shimano parts where the name doesn't really matter. I've quite enjoyed Marin parts that I've used on various models. They've served me well. I'm glad you enjoy your Giant. Any bike that gets people riding is a good bike in my opinion.
