She is someone who truly thinks outside of the box, and that is exquisite! Many people are simply unable to comprehend that, and that's where the "this-is-art-this-is-not-art" problem appears. I happen to love her work, I find it very powerful and moving, personal and intimate. She is truly giving herself to the audience, and audience reacts - artist-audience cooperation and coexistence at its highest.

Everyone who commented bad stuff here didn't even watch the movie. Art is art, you either understand it or not. But just because you don't understand it, doesn't mean it's something inhumane. If you see this movie, you will probably still not get why would someone do things to themselves like she did, not even I understand, but you can also clearly see she isn't some devil's spawn, she is just one weird, out-of-this-world lady, who will forever remain somewhere in your memory. Regardless, this movie was a very interesting watch, something very, very unusual..

However ART is free, in music, literature, paintings, sculptures, performances.... At the end i thought it was a bit complicated to understand but part of what drove her to do all those perfonmances i think that is beautiful, very human in many ways and whats art if not an expression of the human essence. Art explores human nature and presents a piece of it to the audience. It turns something we don't normally think about into something we can see. When people interact with her performance art, they discover something about themselves or human nature. That is what her pieces like Rhythm 0 and The Artist is Present accomplish. That is art.

Why do you need to call it trash when you've never ever seen it? I mean, seriously, just because you're not interested in this doesn't make you entitled to call it trash especially when there was work done. What have YOU done? It's like you're trying to put a box on art. "that's art", "this is not art". What a load of tosh. At least have some respect for people whp devoted their time and effort on this which for them is art. It's the least you can do. Then you can go forget about this.

I haven't seen the film and I'm a bit skeptical on modern art sometimes - in the 'anyone could do that sense' - but just thinking about it now maybe it is the intention and the thought behind it makes it 'art' or whatever you want to perceive it as. Maybe just the fact that decided to do this and her intention makes it artistic. Although the whole contemporary art world frantic circle-jerk over every slightly innovative concept is unjustified and irritating in my opinion.

It is quite interesting how this performance carries the same title 'The artist is present' and is extremely similar to another performance called 'Sentimental Journey', both made by the Swiss artist MANON in 1977 & 1979 - about 30 years before Marina did hers in 2010. Can we really only talk about coincidence here? Can we really only talk about artistic influence? I am not sure.

because I think her aura extraordinary. it seems like she's doing nothing but at the same time she does so much. she sees the person in front of her. you know that feeling when you're in a room full of people and yet you feel alone? this is not the case when you sit with her. her attention is only for you specifically. it's like she sees YOU. and while the next person comes to sit with her she looks down, concentrates, as if she wanted "fresh" energy for the next one. you feel special because her look is only for you. she also said in her documentary that there are so many people with pain in their hearts. and this is true. I think she kind of heals the pain a little only through giving her full attention to this one person in front of her. that's why so many start to cry. furthermore she sits an awful long time without taking a break or going to the bathroom day after day - for several weeks. that's impressive. and that shows how passionated she is about the things she wants us to see. well, that's why she is awesome in my opinion. :)

While I like what you'd saying that like a social science/phycology study/initiative not art really what would you say to that?

ah I get your point. I think in that case it's hard to understand if you're comparing this to the art of painting for example. what she does is "performance art". it's not easy to measure performance art with the common art forms. it's difficult to interpret if you only try to see the aesthetic characteristics. but I get that it's strange to see something like that. many people ask "why the heck is this art?" :D
