Marina Abramovic talks about her work, her collaborations and the future of performance art with New York Times culture reporter Patricia Cohen -- www.timestalks.com. Marina Abramovic has used her own body as a medium, pushing herself beyond her limits. After her landmark retrospective at MoMA in 2010, she collaborated with director Robert Wilson, singer-composer Antony Hegarty and performer Willem Dafoe, to create an experimental opera based on her biography. The work, "The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic," will be performed at Luminato in Toronto June 14-17.

I am an artist myself and in my opinion, I don't believe that art can only be made in one place or strictly at a studio. It's as silly as saying a doctor can't save or change lives outside of a hospital. In whatever form, be it making bread, cooking, singing, loving, giving, receiving, or simply speaking, art can be made. I personally feel that life itself is art and the time and place form the canvas while we make what we can of it (as people and as artists of our own right disregarding whether anyone of us think we are artists or not).I have no intention of disrespecting Abramovic, as she is entitled to her own opinions, but I strongly do not believe in art being solely about "context and intention" only.

As opposed to many of the comments. I quite enjoy this interviewer. She asks rather philosophical questions rather than just the general questions everyone asks. And she lets Marina talk rather than interrupting her with another question.

Storyteller29 yea...the problem is...imagine,whqt real horrible things can easily hide because this type of art is normal...how will real stuff be qe to be exposed if there were serious things going on,trafficing, the stuff they do out there that we know is very real...I get whqt she says...sounds nice, she is using after all, speqking I mean...in the frequencies that almost hypnosis people...believe me...there are frequencies that make us react the way we do...that we commonly use..but again...hoe would we be qe to tell...qnd the problem is,that we auto.atically think...when people seem normal...we think they aren't capable of doing things we wouldn't do...we think they can't camouflage what we think they don't reqlly do with what they reqlly do...just because they say they don't...this can be a very dangerous thing,to normalize the things she does...when we know, for a fact...that it's normally the people in gov that do these unnatural things, forbreql though...not pretend...you mqy not believe it...but think about the soul...were talking about the people she hangs with, leaders, the lives they live,it is qq stressful job...the high-class people are, almost empty inside...but the soul, the spirit still longs for true love, not romance, but love,oy,up there...they can't even find the imitation of it...what we out here, think is love, but is attraction...illusion...where they sit...even that,is very attqinae...but yet forbidden because of their status, they have to maintain...eventually,rhey hide enough,to where those, willing to get into relationships with them, are just as empty...so...whqt do they want, what next do they or can they resort to,when they long for innocence...qnd the women around are so superficial...cold...they try to fill the emptiness with whqt ever innocence they can find...qnd we know, these kind of people have always been involved with trafficking qnd such things...to think they don't,is closing our eyes to it...these days are dangerous...because we allow ourselves to normalize the things that will make People jobs in finding criminals that do these things because the culture is so saturated in the normality of it...they can easily hide...just imagine, hqd someone done something like these things(ritual)thqt she does,to someone in your family...it was a high profile person...they found out who...but they had power...no one believed it,because it was promoted as art...qnd all you have left is an empty case, becquwe it blended in...oy you knew the facts...your loved ones...but to everyone else,it was art...it was fake...no one knew you...atleast not enough to make the majority believe it...they win...because everyone thought it was art

A fair portion of that 'new audience' was at the Jay-Z video shoot she appears in. Abramovic didn't seem too shocked in the moment. Of course she and Jay-Z already share a large overlapping audience. Some call them 'Creatives', others call them 'New Yorkers', 'Brits', 'Parisians', 'Berliners' Brooklynites' 'Angelenos' ''Seneglese' ''Kenyan' and so forth. This rap thing seems to be catching on....worldwide.

Marina Abramovic soll 66 Jahre alt sein? Das ist kaum zu glauben. Sie wirkt wesentlich jünger und hat eine gewaltige Ausstrahlung. Sie hat sich seinerzeit mal in die Augen schauen lassen. Preface: When you never see or witness profound love between your parents (who have never reached spiritual maturity) .... and thus never know LOVE as a child............... and the cycle dates back generations ......... People worship 'eccentric' artists. Apparantely they appear super modern and progressive when compared to the rest of us. The more extreme the 'art' (or as l deem it, the sickness), the more interesting .... to me she is just another 'eccentric artist' on the schyzotypal/schizoid comorbid autism/asperger spectrum, thats all .... which lends itself to her blankness, disconnection, appearance, soulessness and obsessions and fascinations with the darker, sicker, perverse, unconventional elements of life .... but more importantly, she is the manifestation and representation of the generational, family lineage/bloodline templating and dysfunction of her family of origin. She then mirrors to society the sickness in people, that too exists within her self, her family and all her previous generations of her family. That's all. Healing required, but no one in the family either now or then has/had the courage, conscousness and awakening to work towards a profound 'union with self' and thus know LOVE ... the highest level of consciousness that will ever exist. She appeals to the sickness, mental illness, darkness, perversions, violence and degradation that exists in unhealed people. Healthy people, empaths etc see into her soul and see her un-development, her nothingness, her black empty void. Her art does nothing for us, in fact, only promotes pity for such an existence that cannot truly know, give and receive profound love with the desire to deeply elevate all creation. Healthy people are un-moved and unaffected by her. She operates in the dimension of the unhealed together with the others who are unhealed. Leave them there. Of no interest to the rest of us. Will be interesting to see if she is capable of transmuting her intergenerational/ bloodline trauma and sicknesss, into LOVE. In other words, breaking the intergenerational cycle of dysfunction and 'disconnect with the self' that exists in her lineage and thus elevating all soul consciousness in her group, higher. She is not ready, in this lifetime at least ... it appears.

@@taboo8943 Thank you so much for your comment. I am an INFJ and l look deep, deep into the core and soul of people ...and can clearly see what she is, who she is, where she comes from and why she manifests in the way that she does .... ultimately, she and her family/lineage need to heal. She is manifesting all that is dark & sick within her family template. That's all. She is the representation of generations of low consciousness, unevolvement, unbalance and disconnect with the self .... that is deeply entrenched in her family line. In other words, where she comes from does not know 'Love'. She is the product of that, as were all the people in her family and the generations before her. She has not worked on elevating her soul group (i.e. herself & family, upwards ..... but rather sits and plays with the shadows and shows us her dark, disturbed and sick pain having not come from love, deep and symbiotic soul connection (within self & others) and thus cannot show real love..... since she does not know it on any level. She will appeal to people at her level. To others, like myself, we see her very, very clearly. Big hello to you from Melbourne, Australia. Take care.

I honestly believe the more horrible acts you commit in life the longer you’ll live and in some cases the younger you look. Look at all the elites living into their 90’s and 100’s and how young this woman looks, something sketchy is definitely going on. I also bet that she is a freak in bed, would definitely tap that.

Marina abramovic is that teenager who couldn't get over the phase in their life where self harm, misery, pain, trauma was equated to a creative mind because at a young age one is not able to suppress the most animalistic instincts and sensationalism associated to almost sadistic acts attracts them. It takes evolution, strength to suppress the animal within to bring out the human which happens throughout one's life but looks like marina never evolved or got over that phase infact that very phase escalated into something extreme which is reflected in her "art" where she doesn't just romanticize the experimentation with inflicting injury onto herself but takes it to another limit and also lets other people inflict injury and then calls it the baring of the psychology of the society. A lot of people like marina dont evolve and aren't truly able to teach abd train themselves to not enjoy certain pathetic things and she encountered such people in rythm 0. A true evolved adult even in the most favourable situation wouldn't hurt someone because it just doesnt pleasure them, infact its just disgusting and immature to them. Also, there are very few who never fully evolve and its obvious from the fact that most people did not try to harm her but there were some including her own self who did, they were the less evolved ones, the most impressionable too who tend to slip into darkness of all kinds.
