thank you for this! When the first season came on the air, I loved the yellow wicker chair, so my mom suggested I write to the set decorator. He was kind enough to answer my letter and told me where they purchased it. Lucky for me (and my dad's convertable car!) we went to the Los Angeles store Rappaport, and the salesman told me yes, there were two chairs originally, the designer bought one, and I got the other! Many years later, I gave it to my niece, with the strict instructions "mary's chair" is to stay in the family!

@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane Why don't you do a vid on all the different layouts? You say it changes over the years, so make a vid showing how it changes, and compare them. I saw one yesterday where she was really cold, and was trying to get the stove to give off heat, it goes unnoticed, otherwise.

@RedheadLondon That's a good idea. I wouldn't create a tour for each version, but I could show screen grabs from the show of the different set design changes. Each of these tours takes me about 100 hours to create. So I woukd just show screen shots. Thanks for the idea.

I'm a guy and I watch the show every Saturday. For me, it was an event. Mary was definitely a role model for many, including me. While I didn't want to be her (I'm a guy) she did make me want to be a better person. Our lives sort of paralleled each other. I had just moved out on my own and rented my first apartment. Her best friend lived in her building. My best friend lived in my building I didn't have many funds, so I had to decorate my apartment on a shoestring budget. I went with style over expensive. All of my friends just loved my apartment and what I did with it, just like Marys'. In fact, my best friend dropped in unannounced and he brought along his sister. It was the first time she had seen my apartment. She asked me if I had hired a professional decorator! Anyway, Mary and the show did have a positive influence on my life and it did make (with some effort) make me a better person.

Mary's apartment didn't exactly whisper the 70's, itself! 😂 With the sunken living room and plush (almost shag) carpeting of mustard yellow and brown. And the olive walls. (I think the simulation modernized it a little bit by removing the carpeting and replacing it with what looks like hardwood or hard vynle flooring?) In any case, Mary's apartment was chic- but definitely 70's chic. Come to think of it, I think Rhoda's apartment screamed the 60's! With all the day glow colors. I know a lot of people still decorated with day-glow colors in the 70's (Especially hot pink and shocking orange)... but I think that was a holdover from the 60's. Rhoda's aesthetic didn't fully join the neutral tones of the 70's until she got married, moved to New York, and got her own show. I'm really geeking out on this! 🤓😂 I just love that whole era of my early childhood and this subject makes me happy! ❤

I always loved the step down into Mary's apartment as well as the built-in bookshelf. It is interesting how the set was changed over the seasons, but I never noticed. I wonder if the little wooden steps were an afterthought as the first season progressed giving the actors more options for movement? The progression from no steps to one that is permanently built in is a natural one. This is such a familiar space, having grown up watching MTM every Saturday night. Very nicely done. 👍🏽 I was two years old when the show premiered, but my mom and grandmother watched from the start. I watched, but didn't understand it like they did. 😄 As time went on to when I was older and watched the old episodes in my teens, I fell in love with the fashions worn by Mary, Phyllis and Rhoha. 😲 My grandmother was extremely talented when it came to designing and sewing clothes, and she was always very stylish with original designs, or her take on a well-known designer's work. She made clothes for herself, my mom, many others and me. I was a fashionable little girl, starting at age two, who wore capes and matching berets made by my grandmother, floor length maxi dresses, pleated short skirts/dresses, and other styles that were popular in the 60s and 70s. My mom and I had a couple of matching outfits that my grandmother made, and she even made an outfit the three of us to match and compliment each other's look for a Fourth of July event when I was around three years old. When I first saw Phyllis and Bess dressed alike, it was cool to see and reminded me of my mom and myself.🙂 Mary often reminded me of my grandmother. My grandmother was very light skinned with very loosely curled natural hair because of her being part Native American. She was a young grandmother at three months after her 40th birthday. She also looked a lot younger than her age and people thought I was her baby, and that my mom was her sister, who also looked very young. She was outgoing, stylish, funny, independent... worked before and after my grandfather passed, she drove sporty cars (a 69 Mustang convertible, two Dodge Chargers) she loved throwing parties, too, but they weren't as disasteraly funny as Mary's. 😄

I vaguely remember this show from my childhood but I have no memory of Rhoda’s vibrant apt. Wow! What a colorful space! How could I forget that?? This is fantastic! My mom loved the Mary Tyler Moore show and, since we had only one TV when I was growing up, we watched what our parents watched. I have been an interior designer for the past 35 years and, more than any other visual experience I had as a kid, Mary's apartment without a doubt birthed my own interest in interior design. I hadn't seen the set in years but remembered everything about it - from the stained glass "garage door" at the kitchen breakfast bar to the bookcase "step" to the M on the wall. Thank you so much for doing this! (As a side note, I even remembered thinking that the plaster weeping between the lath in Rhoda's apartment meant there was no insulation - a really bad idea considering Minneapolis winters :-).

I love this. This show inspired me so much as a teen. I use to watch this show as a rerun as a teen in the 90s. I was def inspired. I think subconsciously I became a little bit Rhoda and a little bit Mary as an adult. I had a very unique apartment in my early to mid 30s that I called my Mary Tyler Moore apartment. It had a loft and I painted one wall bright orange. This was a joy to see! One of my favorite episodes was when Rhoda redecorated Lou’s apt. To this day I think it was amazing design. It was very modern but also retro. I’m the episode Lou hated it which was of course hilarious.

LOVE! This tour was so fantastic. Without a doubt, Mary's apartment is my absolute favorite of all TV settings. You did a wonderful job touring it. I took a woodworking class in high school and yes, I made an M. It's my initial and as a little girl I always watched the show and loved that M on her wall. I never spotted the R though. Did you notice in the scene of Lou taking too much of the dinner there was a guy sitting behind the dining table at the little table by the window? That actor is Henry Winkler before he became famous as the Fonz.

So, you had an M too? But, you even made yours. Cool. Yes, I thought about pointing out "The Fonz." I just watched an interview with him about doing that episode. It's kind of sad and funny, because it lines up with what happened to him in that episode. He was new there, obviously, and everyone else knew each other. So, when they broke for lunch, he said the whole cast went off to wherever they go and he didn't have a clue where to get any lunch. He said that after that, when guest actors were on any show he was a part of, that he made sure that they knew where they could get some lunch.

Hi! I'm so happy your channel was in my "recommendation"...I love it! Watching Rhoda as a young girl inspired me to become a window dresser. As a little girl, my parents would take us kids to see the Christmas display windows in our city's downtown. Back then, there were no malls...but every city had fabulous old department stores with huge windows. The windows displayed everything from fashion to animated Santa Claus, his elves, & a steamer model train. When I saw those amazing displays, I wondered who designed all the detail & beauty? All I knew was that someday I would do that too. So when I saw the character "Rhoda" and heard the job-title "window-dresser"...From that day on, I called myself a window-dresser! Lol! After high school, (college was never an option for me)...I just needed to get myself to a department store & do my thing! And that's exactly what I did! I had no training. I had no experience...Not even a portfolio of pictures. What I had was confidence in my ability to do the work...I just knew it! In the beginning of my career, I sometimes would work for free...Just to get my foot in the door. Once I showed my skill, and my window displays = foot traffic & profit for the stores...Well my reputation was one of " Oh Dee Dee, she's the best!...Hire her immediately!" Eventually, I traveled all over the country designing displays for: department & specialty stores...and later, even airport shops. I even became a "visual display trainer"...(Training on the corporate level) So you see, The Mary Tyler Moore Show is near & dear to my heart. I loved both their apartments...But to this day my home is sooooo inspired but Rhoda's bright, fun & whimsical space...(with just a bit more square footage. Lol!) Sorry for the long comment...but I loved my work for 40+ years...it was a fabulous ride! Thank you so much for posting these 2 apartment who has inspired so many of us gals to dream (&) actually live our dreams. Peace friend. ❤💃 (BTW, As of tonight, I'm a new subscriber to your amazing channel🙂❤)

People (mainly men) underestimate what a life changer that series was for us. An independent woman (they tried with "That Girl" but that show was still a generic sit-com) who sleeps with the men she dates, cares more for her career than the men she dates and spends all her most important moments with her found family. A whole generation of young women aspired to the lives Mary and Rhoda modelled. I, too, wanted to live Rhoda's life more than Mary's. And did.

Thank You! Thank You! I think this is my favorite KZbin show. MTM Show was my absolute favoarite when I was a kid. I wanted to grow up and be Mary too, and like in that cook apartment. I love the way you presented this unseeable walls. Rhoda's is great too. Your imagination is outstanding!! I feel inspired to watch the entire series aagin. I can't wait for more. You really made my day. This is such an original idea. Many thanks, Rob in NYC. Can't wait to see what else you do!

My best friend and I like to borrow the "I'm the Mary, you're the Rhoda" line from Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion. They fought over who was the Mary, but in our case my friend is the Mary and I'm the Rhoda....and we're both totally cool with that! 👌 BTW I've even heard Oprah say she had an "O" on her wall!

What a treat to see Rhoda's Apartment. I have always loved her place with the vibrant colors. It is so her and she's one of my all time favorite TV characters of all time. Valarie Harper made and created her, I can't see anyone else playing that role. Thank you for this. The bookcase in Mary's living area has such a charm. I think that is what made me fall in love with that apartment. Sometimes I like to watch the show just to see this apartment. In many ways I was sad when she moved to the new apartment, but I do understand that it was about Mary Richards moving forward in her life.

The REAL house in Minneapolis on Kenwood parkway, is just enormous beyond words. IT's a MANSION. 7 bedrooms. We never saw Phyllis' apartment more than a couple of times, and not enough to get a good feel for the place. Phyllis' apartment was on the first floor, and Babrara Gardner lived in the apartment on the second floor (She was played by Yvonne Wilder, and only appeared in one episode) Then Mary's was obviosuly the third floor. Since the real house was built in 1900, like many of that time, it had no driveway, so that's why scenes at the beginning always had Mary pulling up out front on the street. Today, the house has a 3 car garage that was added, but at a price... the house no longer has a backyard because of that. They installed a driveway, which I thought was not wise.... since the front yard is already quite small (Corner lot has a nice big side yard, but not much front) that driveway comes in at an angle and goes right up to the side porch of the house, and not the main entry. In it's original form, I'm almost certain that was a sleeping porch on that side of the house, which common in home before A/C really happened. To me, the driveway looks awkward on the lot, with it's skewed angle, and you'd have easy enough access to the garage in back by using the alley which has always been there between that house and the neighbors.

Thanks for letting us know all this. I understand wanting convenience (and off-street parking) but it is a shame to see these grand old homes defiled. Of course, people were no doubt saying the same thing when they were broken up into apartments.

I just wanted to say that I really love the 4th wall and bathroom you created for Rhoda's apartment. I particularly love the niche over the bathroom door. I've seen a lot of old homes with those. Rhoda often joked about how tiny her apartment was so it was definitely a small space.

thanks marina - you're gonna make it after all! :) another job well done on a classic favorite of (i suppose millions of) people - i know that guys liked her apartment and independence as much as girls but it being focused on her was practically unheard of in 1970 - except for THAT GIRL, there simply wasn't any depiction of a single modern woman on tv - i never missed it myself and then i stayed tuned for BOB NEWHART as well - anyway - thanks! :)

Another great job, i also wondered how cold Rhoda apartment was especially since they were in Minnesota 🥶 how about the farm house from Green Acres? I know it was part of the plot but it always bugged me they never fixed up the house. It would be cool if you showed it as it was on the show then how it could've been if they fixed it up.

Heh heh ... you reminded me of ... I lived in Malibu for a while with two housemates, in a little house a quick walk up from Pacific Coast Highway. We did not arrange for telephone service right away, and it was fine with us -- even in the days before phones you could carry around with you. But then one day we had a visit from one of our friends from school, and when he asked if he could use the phone we told him how to get to the pay phones in front of the party store down on PCH. When he returned, he commented: "At least on Green Acres they only had to climb the telephone pole."
