Dauan Hendley - If you join the military to GET money for college - that means that you don't HAVE money for college until AFTER you have already served in the military. Which would mean that when you are currently IN the military, you don't have a college degree. Officers are a different story - many of them earn their commissions WHILE they are in college, BEFORE active service.

He was often told not to hole the rifle in such a way that the thumb covered the end of the barrel when the weapon was put down at your side during a certain drill maneuver. Well, on that day he didn't check his weapon. When he brought the butt of the rifile down, the impact was enough to discharge the round and take his thumb with it.

I love you guys even more than I did ten minutes ago. You are the epitome of individuals who have gone through the life changing experience of becoming a member of the most elite club in the world. We all came from backgrounds that led us somehow to the Corps, and we relished in the success we were able to achieve despite our differences. I was a nobody until I became a Marine. I was a Staff Sergeant in 5 years and a Gunny in 8. I was a Drill Instructor and a few years later returned to be an Instructor at DI School. The best job I ever had was being a Drill Instructor. I retired at 22 years as a Master Gunny. I love you guys! Yeeeaaaahhhhh!!

Are you talking about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis? Sorry for your loss. There is still no cure for it either. Most people pass within five years of diagnosis. Did you ever find out if it was familial ALS? If that is the case there is a 50% chance his siblings "yourself" may develop the disease too. Most cases aren't familial though. Military service members are far more likely to develop ALS too for some reason that is still not fully understood. If you ever show the following symptoms you should get checked out: difficulty swallowing, cramps, stiff muscles, weak muscles in an arm or a leg or slurred speech.

Awesome! I was in the Army and have lots of great funny stories that I can tell too my grand kids. It never fails, there is also that one or two guys in your platoon that can't do anything right. We had one guy who was convinced in his own mind that he was going to do something wrong and he actually did very often. It was a physiological issue with him. Everyone tried to convince him that it was all in his mind but to no avail. He was not someone you wanted to be around for very long. We were on the grenade range one day and when it was his turn the range NCO was next to him and when he pulled the pin and went to throw it, he dropped it next too both he and the range NCO. Believe me, that range NCO moved like lightning grabbing it and throwing it. Next words we heard was "PRIVATE, GET OFF MY RANGE! YOU ARE A NO GO!!!"
