I graduated high school June 4, 1976 and on July 1 I was sweating my ass off in some old WW2 barracks in Parris Island. Spent my 18th birthday at the rifle range. I ended up as an avionics technician MOS 6617 UHF communications I-level maintenance. Got a lot of good training that I still use today. Another reason I joined the Marines was because my brother had joined the Air Force the previous year, and I wanted to one-up his ass.

When it comes to joining the military, the biggest critics are the ones who have never been in it. I've been in the ARMY since 2006, and I've been deployed. I haven't harmed anyone, in fact I've helped more than harm. Now, I'm in the Reserves, and the ARMY is paying for my bachelors degree, using the Post 9/11 GI bill. My daughter was born while I was deployed and it hardly cost my wife and I anything because of Tricare. I re-enlisted when I came home, last year. The best choice I've ever made.

Royal Marines is British Marines, very difficult training and selection but one of the best line infantry units in the world. I served 6 years in the British Army infantry and did tours of Afghan and Iraq. Some of my best years were in the Army, and some of my worst. One thing I would point out is that in the UK having military service on your CV / Resume doesn't get you very far nowadays. I've struggled to get minimum wage work nowadays. Ultimately my advice to this guy (I'm sure he's made his decision by now) is to go to Uni/college and if you can get a good job that you enjoy do that. If you have fuck all job opportunities, join the military. That's the advice I would give my children too.

Marines are not Navy, it's just that because the two branches work together their command structures are welded at certain points. Because the captain is the main commander on a ship, for example, any Marines on board have to defer to him/her while at sea. When on operation, the Navy is the one in control of field logistics even if Marines are the ones actually landing on the beaches.

Get a weapon; knife, firearm, mace/pepper spray, baton, whatever. Practice with it. Learn how to draw it out quickly, where to hit with it, or just plain hit something with it. Most weapons require very little practice with; a knife can be used effectively with zero combat or training experience. A firearm can be used effectively with proper guidance and practice. A baton, well.......stick, hold in hand, swing, beat brains in, end of story. Knowing your weapon and how to use it is the easy part. it's the mental conditioning that's tougher and trickier. You should not condition yourself to kill without a second thought, but you should prepare yourself to do what you need to do. Any fool can kill. It's knowing when to kill that makes the difference between you and a criminal. Real violence has no rules. Your defense shouldn't either.

Marine Corps is not for the weak. I was laid back stayed out of trouble. Great experience but it wasn’t for me after four year. I make 10 times more money now than ever. I made the military a stepping stone to a better life as a civilian.

I'm glad we cleared that up....

i second that. It can be more than you think or less depending on how you interpret your experience. But all in all. I can say i appreciate the experience and opportunities.

You have to be almost maxing the pft and go to an officers recruiting station. There is a huge difference in the paycheck. If u enlist with a degree u get E2. I'm an officer candidate in the army and I enlisted as an e4 with a degree and I get paid as an e6 during ocs and until I get my commission

That is some really good advice. My grandfather's brother joined the Marines because he liked the uniform lol. Then went off to fight in the Pacific. You want to talk about hell on earth. What info we could pry out of him...NO ONE in my immediate family joined the Marine Corps. My mom's cousin did and got sent to Lebanon... yep you guessed it.

I just love the fact that some people in the comments are trying to compare UK ->commandos

I concur on the final message that kevin said. really think wisely about the branch you decide to go with and my advice, don't sign on the dotted line before you know its the job you want. I'm in the AF with my 2nd choice but kind've don't like the fact I don't get to fly but, I still love the fact I'm serving my country. Gives you a sense of pride!

I want to join army. So if I want a easy lady type job I have to have a high score on the asvab?

I was going to join, but never did. One reason was because I was so skinny. I later realized that many people that are skinny join and do fine. I ended up working at a fast food restaurant for 4 years after I graduated high school. I could have joined the military, met a lot of people, traveled the world and been done with it. Furthermore my college would have been paid for and I could have gotten a degree. For the poor like I was the military is a good option to look at.
