Marine fossil deposits - now with more eel

Thiago and I had a blast today! We head down to the North Canterbury shores to some sites I haven't been before. We explore some amazing valleys full of marine deposits and come away with some great fossils, it was like being in the lost world.
I also found a dead eel which is by far the largest eel I have found outside of Willowbank (a nature preserve in Christchurch) - no idea if it died in the ocean or got washed down the stream.

As a younger girl my brothers and sisters and iplayed on similar boulders made from shell concretions like those you found, Here in Texas up on the LLANO ESTACATO s. Of Sweetwater, tx....rolling plains of grass and creeks. So many fossils in this quarry. Childhood fun and games. Thank you for sharing.

The eel was probably a female one returning from the river going to the sea to breed. Serious sledge hammer Thiago carried around.Keep the vids coming.

There's so many shells & fossils & concretions around...you're never too overly excited(!) But man, as a landlubber here in the Heartland USA, I'd love to get me a pair of them Tusk shells so I can complete my metamorphosis into 'Walrus Man' for this summers swimming season!

Oh yeah! It is going, to be spring there where you are at!! Now its our turn to get fall weather! We certainly could use it! It has been 104.0 farenheit all week long where I live and I cant wait for fall! It doesn't get really cold here untill January and feb. I am like, "BRING IT ON!" Mother nature! Thats the price you pay for living in southern New Mexico! Anyways, its so beautiful out there, and fascinating. I really want you to find a perfect tiny crab. That sounds terribly hot over there! Personally, I prefer the cold over the heat. Once you get moving you warm up quite quickly, once you get too hot there's not much you can do other than go for a swim :)

I know that beach. It’s very well hidden so not many people know about it except for locals. I used to swim there as a kid and find fossils. They are everywhere. Always had the whole place to ourselves. Not too bad for surfing as well

Thanks! It's south of Motunua - I don't think it has a name actually. But you can see Motunua island from it, so not very far away.

If you like mollusc / bivalves, we found a valley FULL of them this past weekend. Every concretion had some kind of amazing shell in it. Will make it into a video soon 😊

Are those shells old and fossilized or just empty shells g from recent times and how can you tell the f difference?

Hiya Bob, the fossil shells usually have a different look to them and aren't occurring in the area anymore. It's way easier when you find them still in the cliff to tell they are fossils :)

Can you X-ray rocks like this to see what’s inside ?

You can use a synchroton or an MRI. The x-rays aren't great on the fossils we have hear because of how dense the rock is. Perhaps they work better on other specimens. Craig had his penguin scanned using a synchroton and the results are craaaaazy!
