When the game first came out, it was the Dark Souls of military FPS. It had one of the hardest campaigns with only one difficulty and multiplayer was as advanced as Battlefield but played like Call Of Duty on hardcore. Basically pros on PC were the only group that could really play it. However easy mode was brought to 2022 with all DLC/season passes made free. Everyone who knows played it when it came out don’t usually play it today. It became free 6 months ago on Xbox game pass, about 9 months ago on PS4/5 streaming service and it became free on Steam on PC about a year ago. It became really popular after the last update.

It had a pretty awful rollout, too. The first one was pretty widely popular for a few years, but Sandstorm had major release problems that damaged the popularity of its release. It's WAY better now, though.

It was a pc exclusive for several years. NWI and Focus interactive definitely haven't put enough resources into promoting the game. And each update simply takes too long to keep the casual players around. It's unfortunate because this game's one of the most fun you can have from a shooter these days. And the quality of later updates (even though they take longer to deliver) definitely add even more value to the game.

Fun Fact: The "loudener" on the M1 Garand was a real thing, it was supposed to be a flash suppressor if I remember correctly. It was for one of the sniper variants, either M1C or M1D (can't remember for sure)

Badger has dismemberment turned off (probably because of youtube), but in-game, people are getting torn apart by grenades, .50 cals and 4GS shotguns. The weapons and sounds are extremely realistic, it's an easy 10/10 in audio design.

i love LMGs. once in sandstorm, i took up a position and laid down on the ground with my bipod to cover a certain spot. but next to me, behind a wall, was an enemy machinegunner with the exact same thought and we were covering the exact spot from our respective enemies. neither one of us were willing to stand up, retract their bipod, walk up to the other machinegunner only to get gunned down. so we simply continued to lay there, talking to each other as we gunned down ppl who were passing by

A bit of a history lesson. Back in the day, like 15 years ago (I'm not joking, back in 2007 (though, technically the mod started all the way in 2002), now I feel old, thanks 'me' for reminding me...), there was a Half Life 2 modification called Insurgency, which was very much like Sandstorm, but very rough around the edges. But hey, it was a cool mod to play. This mod was made by a few people and due to modding community effort. Those people then started a company New World Interactive (NWI) and in 2014 Insurgency got a standalone release as full blown video game and has been sold on Steam in a lot more polished version. The reviews were great and it was a lot of fun to play. Sandstorm wanted to push things even further with a singleplayer campaign and to add more things in. And in 2018 they successfully did just that, though, the singleplayer campaign had to be scrapped due to the production requirements being too high and they did not wanted to delay the game. The launch was a bit rocky due to technical issues, but it was also a great success for the relatively small studio. And since then NWI was supporting the game with new content releases in form of new maps, game modes, weapons and cosmetics (last one is their only monetization model). There is also a robust modding community that just keeps on adding more stuff to the game and praise the God Emperor, dedicated servers and a server browser! But to answer the question of why Insurgency Sandstorm isn't all that popular is because it's a semi-hardcore game. That in itself is a niche genre. But it's not a full on military sim game, like Squad. But it's also not Call of Duty arcade shooter. You could say it's kind of a inbetween. You die very quickly and the game modes are very objective focused with very limited respawns. Meaning you could be sitting in a spectator mode for minutes, before you could get another go at the game. So it's not a very new player friendly game from that point. But to a lesser degree, the great coop game mode helps with that issue. And since the dev team is quite small, there is little marketing on the game. Sometimes there was an occasional sponsored video, but that's about it. So the game pretty much lives on the community and spreads with the good word recommendation. And yeah, audio and gunplay in the game is pretty nuts. Can recommend GameSpot's video 'Firearms Expert reacts to Insurgency' about it. ;)

As a point about that 6 Gauge shotgun, it's the KS-23, developed by the Russians. They had a surplus of rejected 23mm anti-aircraft barrels and found out they could be cut down and safely used at shotgun pressures... So this 6 gauge monster was born. It's effective to ~150m, carries one chambered and 3 in the tube. Each round of ammo for this sucker weights 1/5 of a pound! Everything about it is frankly... Terrifying.

My favorite part about the In-game voice chat is that it sounds like actual radio comms and the proximity chat is based on where you are in the environment down to the echo of your voice in certain buildings

Insurgency: Sandstorm (2018) is actually the Unreal Engine sequel to the original Insurgency (2014) (which was _originally_ a mod of Half Life 2). While it was popular for a while, it did have a pretty rough start due to the change of game engine which made the game horribly optimized. Also the new content was trickling in slowly compared to other mainstream titles since New World Interactive is pretty small. If you noticed how good the weapon models and animations are, its all thanks to NWI hiring community modders from back in the OG Insurgency's heyday; their passion for realism shows. Since then we've had major bugfixes, optimization passes and a good amount of content over these past 5 years as well as a small, yet dedicated playerbase. I highly recommend the PvE mode, since it pits you against bots that are challenging, helps you ease into the game mechanics and lets you pretty much try any guns from both factions. PvP is a lot of fun as well, but you will have to learn the maps well to do well. 32:10 - Well, for the most part it's regular "tacticool" comms for the Security side, but when the teams switch and you become Insurgents, it' becomes meme'd to hell with shouts of "HABIBI HELP ME CAP", and "ALLAHU AKBAR!" all around. Usual online stuff.

7:36 If you're playing the Commander role, then you can call it all kinds of support. 4 A-10 runs, 1 Apache run, 1 support helicopter with Gatling, 4 artillery HE bombardments, and 4 smoke bombardments. If you're the insurgent commander, then you can don't get air support but can get chemical artillery, and rocket artillery. 21:25 Insurgency's original developers had served in Afghanistan as part of the Canadian Armed Forces, so they wanted to replicate the experience as much as possible. Solid sound design is fundamental to the Insurgency experience. The sound is even tweaked for environment - so the BMG firing from a room is different that firing from a hilltop. Insurgency: Sandstorm is a great game, especially for me and my vet group that plays it religiously. The publisher didn't really advertise it well, and it is pretty much being spread by word of mouth. If you love games like Escape from Tarkov, you'll fall in love with Insurgency. The weapon sounds are absolutely chunky and if you've ever fired any of the weapons in the game you'll recognize the sounds immediately. As for the weird ass proximity chat? Bro it gets reeeeaaaaal strange and I'm here for it. I've heard random ass political discourse, people discussing why silicon butt enhancements are destroying America, and a bunch of dudes just singing Backstreet Boys.

Regarding my thoughts on the game, I have never played it myself because I have never heard of it until Badger uploaded the video. And I usually watch a lot of videos by Brandon Herrera, Kentucky Ballistics and other similar gun channels. The audio of the guns, as well as how you can handle each gun surprised me as to how accurate it seemed.

15:40 yeah the a-10 is fucking terrifying to literally everybody who's seen it in action. the bullets it fires are nearly as large as a beer bottle, it's one of the cheapest aircraft to produce and maintain and the design of its engineering has seen it safely return to base with damage that other planes can barely dream of it has devastatingly effective potential, but much like the standard american army, it's not exactly what you'd say is a particularly precise instrument of war thankfully, due to upgrades, improvements in training and retro fitting, the likelihood of friendly fire has been cut down on significantly since it's earliest iterations that being said i did hear recently that the a-10 and all of it's variants are slated to get replaced by a retrofitted crop duster which i think is hilarious

I remember the original Insurgency when it was "just" a free mod (Insurgency: Modern Infantry Combat), (in fact I still have it in my steam library) and it's non-mod sequel, I always loved it to bits because it fits that niche where it has BF2's long almost stalemated mass battles that go on for hours and it takes true acts of heroism to break down (which none of the modern incarnations have ever managed to replicate because the lack of dedicated servers and mods means that teams can't be effectively balanced and the maps have no choke points - choke points are REALLY important for first person shooters and it is FRIGHTENING how few game developers know this; they've all gone from DICE/EA, Activision/Blizzard have no clue at all, etc etc - Valve know it, but the game otherwise just isn't up to snuff as a modern shooter), ARMA's realism but trimmed down to still be fun and the fast pace of something like CS but with ADS because it's the 21st century not 1980's Atari (stop this nonsense forthwith). It was also played by a really decent bunch of guys like Black Hawk Down used to be before Novalogic self-deleted. Then Insurgency Sandstorm happened; I don't want it to sound like I'm s**ting on this game because it's still decent and relatively refreshing as relates to the previously listed, but it sadly lost the magic of the original and like BHD, BF2 and others before it all the clans and the good guys melted away. Oh and by the way BF2 is still very much a thing in 2022 and the clans and servers and many of the old players are all there despite EA's wishes. Well worth digging around in.

insurgency sandstorm beyond the goofyness can be a really extreme experience, your charcter in game screaming "granade" just to get cut off right when he or she is saying it while the granade explodes and makes everyone's ears ringing who ever is in the same building, is a borderline ptsd moment. the voice acting and desperation in this game is vary good in terms that "make you really FEEL like your in a fire fight" would recommend even though the difficaulty of this game is pretty high (at least for me due to 6/10 times on PVE iv failed with full squads of human players)

The "best" conversations I've ever had in Sandstorm was that one time that I swear I was in a lobby with actual snakbars. They sounded middle eastern and were extremely antisemitic. It was hillarious. There was also that one time in Insurgency Standalone (the prequel to Sandstorm) where someone (from ME I think) was just randomly talking to people and asking them what country they like. This quickly devolved into: 1) someone claiming that every middle eastern and asian country were terrorists and refusing to elaborate further 2) mf completely pissed off a Russian. Asked him where he's from, he said Russia, and he replied with "Oh, Ukraine, nice." The vatnik exploded and continued exploding for the next 10 minutes, it was hillarous

I believe the reason for the game not being as famous as it should have been was; a) The dev team prioritize DEVELOPING the game since it's launch, and sinply release it without putting much effort into advertising it. b) Because it's a "hybrid" type of game, i.e. a mix between two genre, which in this case combine the casual gameplay of arcade shooter like Call of Duty and realistic hardcore simulation game like ARMA. It's a type of genre you put into the "experimental" category, meaning that it doesn't have a very big community to support it, no solid appeal in the game market and their lifespan tends to be VERY short compared to other genre of gaming. It makes them UNIQUE, but unless they manage to attract a lot of attention and turn their "hybrid" style of game into a trend, like "Battle Royale" for example, they would simply be a one-shot type of game. Mix the two reason above, and you can get the rough ideas on why it isn't very popular. Most of the game's popularity is attributed to the TRUE fan that sticks around long enough to spread it's name via word of mouth, and hopefully with this video, it will gain the clout it deserve as a hybrid.

Insurgency: Sandstorm was released in 2018 and came to consoles in 2019. The only reason it isn't talked about so often is because the so-called "casual" shooter community gravitates around things they already know, like Call of Duty and Battlefield. More hardcore military shooters such as Squad and the infamous Arma 3 are very complex under the hood, and for that reason are relegated only to PC. Insurgency is basically the only hardcore military shooter of it's caliber that is simple enough to be played on all platforms, but regardless, NWI are more focused on development rather than advertising. The people who care about realism in their game mechanics will seek out their game, everyone else won't listen and will stick to Call of Duty. TL;DR: it's not worth it to advertise for a game a casual audience won't like, that's why no one hears about it lol

As a player who's played this game since its launch a few years ago, this game isn't as popular as other shooters mainly because of how slow it updates. And the game can be confusing to new players. But I think it's not such a bad thing. NWI (the developers) got themselves under fire from the community many times for trying to make the game more goofy and marketable by adding funny character skins. We take pride in Insurgency's theme and its more realistic take on a shooter game. So this game falls into the niche of realistic military games from its theme and the damages of bullets, but at the same time, it mostly plays like a Call of Duty game (spawn run around and shoot people) So it's unfortunate that it's niche makes it kinda stuck between the lanes, but it's a very good entry point for people who want to play a more realistic shooter game without committing to more complicated games like Arma or Squad.

keep in mind insurgents effectively have 2 extra supply points, at least for versus loadouts, domination loadouts seem to give everyone everything, besides free gas masks to security loadouts, insurgents can take a free gas mask and a free pistol, which can be the makarov or welrod, which can get AP rounds that give it penetration apparently on par with 7.62x51 AP Also the KS-23 should get its magazine variant, for 7+1 rounds, also the russians call it a carbine since the barrel is rifled Also the welrod in this game isn't the mk 2 in .32 acp is the mk1 in 9mm

The Game is really good, in my experience the servers can be a little screwy sometimes but it's a really good game, the radio and proximity chat is usually either semi-tactical or (more often) absolute insanity, "selling" hand grenades by suicide bombing, reaching people about their cars extended warranty, and so much more.

So the KS-23 came from the anti-aircraft gun. Unfortunately the gun did not hold up to hundreds of 23mm shells being shot through them per minute so they scrapped them. Took the barrel and apparently decided to go green and recycle them into shotgun/carbines. Yes carbine, that thing can still chamber a 23mm round. Currently can be found in Russian prison armories and Russian hunting enthusiasts as the TOZ-123. Yes surprisingly you are allowed to own guns in Russia and they don't seem to have a caliber limit. My muricanism feels insulted by this fact.

On that bit about the "netfuckup" otherwise known as "netflix" variant of Death note. Absolute GARBAGE... William Defoe was the ONLY good character in the entire movie. They flipped all the characters to be essentially their polar opposite personality. Light in the anime: Smart, Svelte, psychotic, patient. Light in the movie: stupid, whiny impatient and pathetic. Misa in anime: Cute, doting, obsessed with Light in her desire to make him love her Misa (or Mia) in the movie: Crazy, ravenous, and she's the one who wears the pants in the "relationship" L in anime: Smart (like absurdly so), quirky but serious, eats sweets simply cause he enjoys them, patient as a saint, cunning, and white. (not really important to the story but relevant for comparative sake) L in movie: Zero patience, no real explanations given for how he arrives at his conclusions, about as psycho as Mia, and made up a stupid ass reason for why he eats candy and sweets when there isn't any need for one, and black (again, not relevant to the story, but they had no real reason to go and change this other than to probably be "inclusive" because he FAILED MISERABLY as L. Probably not for his acting abilities, but for the severe lack of direction by the director.) The story is way too quick paced and offers essentially no background or real character development. Characters are flipped for no reason, plot barely followed the anime, and honestly just shouldn't have been made.. I know I'm ranting a bit, but seriously, don't watch unless you either haven't seen the anime, or are just in the mood to make fun of it with some friends, (probably better to do drunk if you're of legal age that is)

So I like Arma 3, but you kind of need a lot of mods and a MILSIM Unit of others to have fun because the game is very outdated and the public servers are basically GMOD RP servers. I stand by Squad as my go to tactical shooter, its fairly realistic but definitely not a 1 to 1 accurate thing, I am mainly in it for the Galactic Contention mod. Insurgency Sandstorm though, this game is CRIMINALLY UNDERATED. My biggest gripe when I played it was the lack of vehicles (which is a dumb gripe anyway because the game is about the CQC, the only vehicles are a technical and the air support that you can call in) The accuracy from the game to real life firearms is one of the most 1 to 1 things on the market. The developers obviously did their homework, the game makes .50 BMG feel like firing a freight train and 5.56 feels like a fucking airsoft gun with gas blowback. (don't come after me gun community, obviously every gun has recoil but if you are firing a 5.56 or .308 M4 or AR-15 with proper technique the recoil should be minimal. You can reliably spam the trigger from a close to medium range without even using the sights because the shit just flies straight and is an easy shooter.) The sound design, the gunplay and mechanics, all amazing. It can be a clunky game in some ways but the good really outweighs the bad, especially when you throw proximity chat in the mix. Hearing the other team is the greatest thing in any video game

Very realistic great game for tactical play in v AI and bullshit in PvP. Only play AI since I enjoy a challenge and a mode were you win because of strategic efforts rather then just being an aim hero. If you want a entire solo experience go on local mode also very hard since your team AI is more of a temporary destruction then actually useful while the spawns remain the same. I can only repeat what I said on the badge video, Insurgency is in the same boat as Squad, they are both milsims, so supposed to be realistic, Call of Duty and Battlefield kids don't touch that with a 10-foot pole because the guns actually have recoil, and realistic ballistics. Insurgency is closer to a CoD Milsim and Squad is Battlefield Milsim turned to 11. And no, the Netflix adaptation doesn't exist, it has no right to exist. The anime and the Japanese live action movies are way better.
