At 5:20 it looks like the guy standing there might be the one communicating with the pilot with hand signals. While the rest of the ground crew is under the plane doing their stuff he usually just stands there, waits and observes. Sometimes his tasks might include something like eg. removing static electricity of the canopy that accumulates during the flight, but quite often it's just waiting until everybody is ready and no longer under the aircraft so he can signal the pilot to continue the shutdown sequence.
@jaakkomaaniemi21362 жыл бұрын
One of the reasons Finland chose the F-18 back in the 1990's is that as a carrier plane it's well suited for road basing. Can be slammed down hard and arrested with cable if needed. The Swedes built the Gripen for similar use. Now the F-35A is very far from that, it supposedly handles quite poorly at slow landing speeds, doesn't have super robust landing gear nor regular use cable hook. They'll come with brake chute pods, probably to ease that pain. Still, it was deemed compatible with the Finnish air doctrine, so I guess road basing can be made to work. Although there's more to it than landing and taking off.
@herrakaarme2 жыл бұрын
There's absolutely no way Finland would have chosen F-35 if it couldn't use the road bases decently enough. The whole air forces doctrine in Finland is based on the aircraft being decentralised and distributed all over the country if a war happens. These days they could also be sent to Sweden, but it doesn't really change anything since Sweden has the same doctrine. Lockheed Martin must have assured the Finnish Air Force it would be no problem whatsoever. Maybe the aircrafts built for Finland will have a reinforced landing gear!

@norsenomad2 жыл бұрын
From what I've read, the Norwegian F-35 pilots are very satisfied with the 5th gen aircraft. . The drag chute is not "probably to ease the pain". In fact, the drag chute is designed primarily to create aerodynamic drag to shorten landing deceleration, and secondarily to increase ground pressure after touchdown, as you can see by the high attachment point on the fuselage. (Chute will pull the aircraft slightly downwards after touchdown, not upwards - resulting in more load on the main landing gear, not less). . Most of the 800+ delivered (of potentially 3000+) F-35s don't have drag chute pods, as only the F-35As ordered by Norway had that option, as per 2021. The drag chute was an early and unique requirement put forth by Norway, as a Joint Strike Fighter Development Program Partner since June 2002. (Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF), quote: "The drag chute is important for use under extreme Norwegian conditions"). The first Norwegian F-35As, delivered in 2015, did not have the Drag Chute System yet, but this was a retrofitted after all tests were passed and approved, and later deliveries had the pod installed (only 12 aircrafts remain, Aug 2022). Later also Danish, Dutch and Belgian F-35As opted for the Norwegian spec'ed drag chute system. . RNoAF's requirement originates from their Dispersion Concept, which includes a plan to distribute all/many/some of the F-35 aircrafts out on several of Norway's rural airports in a hypothetical case of war. Norway has 98 airports with International Civil Aviation Organization airport code (ICAO code). Challenge is, while common international standard for runways is minimum 2000 meters by 45 meters, due to Norway's topology and demography the standard runway length of "Kortbanenettet" in Norway (most runways) is only 800 meters by 30 meters... So, the F-35 must be able to stop quicker/shorter, with more ground pressure, to use less runway length and also get more directional stability on icy runways in wintertime. One could guess that the surface quality of many of Norway's smallest airstrips are (still only guessing) not too different from Sweden's Finland's rural road/aircraft bases? Gripen, F-18 and F-35 are different aircrafts, but the strategies of the three countries' air forces aren't extremely dissimilar (which doesn't imply they are identical, either). . Defense journalist Tyler Rogoway, Jalopnik: "Even those countries that want to operate the jet from roadways, could also benefit from the system" (the Norwegian F-35A Drag Chute System). . An article on the Drag Chute System, experiences, etc: theaviationist.com/2021/02/23/norwegian-f-35a-jets-with-their-peculiar-upper-fuselage-drag-chute-pod-deploy-to-iceland-for-natos-air-policing/

There is airforce protection infantry that secures the air bases, "solid" or "moving" (= road base). The airforce protection infantry doesn't have much combat capatibility(as in fighting as a company level unit they focus on smaller engagements.) but they do keep the air base and air personnel safe. And as an example if there would be paradrop to attack the airbase in force the airforce protection infatry is supposed to hold on until army units get there. The air force infnatry are "security guards" not full scale combat units. In these excersises there are recon and sometimes even special forces trainees trying to scout/sabotage the airbase or "kill" important personnel. That guy was propably caught in the security zone and caught. The special forces giys especially like to dress up as jogging or berry picking civilians to test the conscripta/reservists.

First of all, I got to say that I generally speaking love to watch your reaction videos about the Finnish defence forces. In this video, there was some things that you were struggling with, so I would like to clear some things up. I hope you won’t take this comment as an insult, but a friendly help. (I served in the Finnish Air Force 1/20.) So, the twin engine fighter is our F/A-18 Hornet and the other one (the single engine fighter) is Swedish Saab JAS Gripen 39. Saab fighters are produced in Sweden, so the Swedish Air Forces doesn’t currently operate with any other manufacturers fighters. And no, they are not getting any F-35’s in the near future. In the early parts of the video, there was this vehicle you called the “modified Pasi”. It is a mobilised anti-aircraft weapon system used to shoot down enemy targets within its range. And last but not least, the “glow-in-the-dark" strips on F/A-18 Hornet’s body are simply just reflectors to prevent the fighters to run into each other in close formation flight at the night. It may sound like funny, but that is the main purpose of them. I hope you find these things helpful.

Thx again for good vid. And something about the roads turned into landingstrips, Sweden also have this in their tactics, so they get to train that aspect too at Ruska22. And theres naturally a benefit for both countries doing these exersices

I actually took part in Ruska 17. Was pretty tough, we were covering the company command tent with only 50% manpower. Against trained guerilla soldiers.

1:40 The rank is "Over-sergeant". which is equivalent to like the US Sergeant first-class/Master sergeant. Finland has less ranks than the US does, so its a bit hard to compare them.

In Sweden we call them airstraits! We test our cars since the -80s top speed but the cops dont like it!

I have heard of airstrips, but airstraits was new to me... Or did you just do a direct translation of "flygraka" wich is the common swedish word used by civilians as well many military people... 😁

Mate I’ve loved all your videos. I’m ex British army . Love the way you watched all countries armed forces. If you want to know any history with the Tower of London I work there for 16 years. Plus if I can with anything else just ask . Great channel. 🇬🇧👍

I was a sub contractor in early 1990thies building one of those highway airports, (I think I can say this now) there is a build in way to F.... them up fast if need be. As to new jas gripen, (not the old) it might be slightly better than F35 in some aspects but I ques they are about the same in terms of performance, gripen being cheaper to operate of the 2 for now.

F 35 is superb outside of speed and agility, maybe even on the price range since SAAB hasn't given any official prices to public.

It would be great to have a reaction video of B-21 Raider (US-made. A beautiful plane). Not quite new but for the mainstream it is)

F18 Hornet is faster than gripen because it has two jet engines. Gripen is more agile and i think it is better in dogfights.

Yeah so that's an improvised airfield, basically they operate off "normal" roads, thus they blocked the road and apparently, had to approach and remove that one person there in the beginning... We Swiss do that too btw. Loads of highways have a removable middle barrier so they can be turned into make shift runways. That psyops thing is short range air defense. I think the rest was answered already.

I don't think it was a real civilian, just training. I didn't hear them say anything and mostly because what are the chances of getting into real situation with a GoPro.

our airforce is deployed outside standard airforce bases immediatelly if the war brokes out (russia knows where they are). They will operate from standard roads and those temporary bases will be moved around constantly. One of the reasons we prefer aircraft carrier -capable fighters. Sweden has the same doctrine

As someone from 🇬🇧 I’ve always wondered why the RAF doesn’t fly F/16’s or F/18’s

As a Finn I sometimes wonder why Air Force is flying Americans instead of European planes. Generals have their reasons, but spare parts may be long way in a time of crisis...?
@dannyrocks77482 жыл бұрын
@@mikkorenvall428 my brain tells me that in times of war and crisis you can only depend on yourselves and it’s better to be self sufficient 😊

@DannyRocks , you answered your own question... The UK are, just as Sweden and a few other countries, capable of designing and manufacturing your own fighterjets.

Doing road landings they will send a blower out to get rid of debris on the road .
