Depressing? Taking a boy aged 10-12 years old, make him fight for his life and endure but trials, just to see if he is tough enough to become a space marine. Then he has to endure 19 surgeries over the next decade, including brain surgery and being skinned alive. All while being hypnotically indoctrinated with loyalty for the Imperium and the skills he needs to fight. Good news is, unless he dies by violence he dies by violence, he is functionally immortal. Of course Space Marines are exposed to (and die by) violence an awful lot. And there are also the other effects of the gene-seed. Sure, it turns you into a 8 foot tall, 900 lb mountain of muscle and reinforced bone with 2 hearts and three lungs. But, depending on which Primarch your gene-seed comes from, you could become a space vampire. Or a space werewolf. Or an emo space albino. Or have an uncontrollable desire to replace your limbs with metal replacements. Fun things like that.

One last thing haha. It's basically a tossup as to which is the greater threat: Tyranids or the chaos gods. One thing to note however is that Tyranids seem to be completely immune to the effects of chaos, so if chaos is the greatest threat to mankind, Tyranids are the greatest threat to chaos. Just something to ponder.

If you are about to learn what Warhammer is here are a few things you should know: 1.) Most importantly. Warhammer 40k unlike any other SCI Fi universe is not BLACK and WHITE its not a good vs evil story. Since its lore is so vast, there are classic good vs evil stories to be found, but generally its gray and depends on how you look at it. As in the real life whether an action of anybody or any group, or race is "right", is entirely subjective. Example: the dark eldar in Warhammer 40k do nothing but take drugs, torture and rape, so by any metric they are objectivly evil. However if they stop being evil psychopaths they all die - So the worst people in 40k also have the best reason to be pure evil. 2.) Gods? And the "warp" and the Setting. Warhammer 40k takes place in our galaxy and after our timeline; 40k means the year 40.000 ish. The Imperiums home planet is "terra" or also earth, in our solarsystem and in Lore Earth is still the imperiums capital. In Warhammer there is one important thing added to realitiy as we know it and that is the Warp. The Warp or Realm of Chaos is a 4th Dimension that can be interacted with, but it will interact back ;-/ The Warp can be entered and the Imperium of mankind uses it to travel between the stars. Without the Warp-dimension for space travel there is noway to get anywhere within a reasonable timeframe. Since the Imperium couldn`t yet break the light Speed barrier, even Communication is done via the Warp. That means: No Warp or no acces to it = no star spanning Empire for mankind. Everything that lives has a connection to the warp, especially conscious lifeforms. Some humans or aliens with a strong connection can use the warp to do "magic". For example Cummunication via the Warp, navigating in the Warp but also cool shit like forcefields, Telekenesis, forcelightning, Mindreading, Forcechoking, Forcelightning, Look-at-things-and-make-it-go-boom, and so on. However warp power is also potentially way stronger and vastly more dangerous than "magic" in any other fantasy universes. Untrained human Warp users socalled "phsykers" can, if strong enough, have the potential to corrupt or literally destroy the planets. Within the warp the emotions of all life manifest as conscious entities, from small deamons, big ones to the four (main) Chaos GODs. Since each of those 4 Chaos Gods represents one basic aspect of emotion and existence, most beings (especially humans) uncontiously "subscibe" to those 4 in general, thus making them the main Chaos gods. The Warp also manifest powerfull belives, so if all mankind thinks that one soldier is immortal he will be. Summary: Humans need Warp for Empire logistics ; warp magic is awesome you can even fight deamons with it, which you only need to fight because humans can and are using the warp in the first place. 3.) Warhammer 40k Lore and History is an ever expanding, ever contradicting and ever changing mess. First there are about one thousand books about 40k lore, so there are things that will directly contridict each other. Some things have since been changed, but the old books and stories are still there, the only reason we know its changed is because newer texts seem to suggest this. Everything i stated about he warp is 50% interpretations of descriptions out of official books, that the fanbase generaly agrees upon, plus 50% of my personal spin on it :-) Because really, we fucking don`t know and many sources say different things. Now i realize that this might dicurage you, since it makes the warhammer lore even more overwhelming that it already is :-) The reason I wanted to mention this is because when you first start to learning about warhammer 40k there comes a point when you realize that people give slighly different accounts about one and the same event. So if you are confused at that point, don`t worry we all are.

Space marines have differing motivations depending on what chapter they are from. The Ultramarines do everything for the glory of the emperor and tend not to have individual personalities, but many other chapters have some degree of personal motivations and personality permitted. As an example, the SpaceWolves are basically werewolf space vikings, and they love hunting and feasting.

A Space marine stands about 8-10ft tall a Primarch (sons of the emperor) stands between 12-16 ft tall and the emperor was between 18-20ft IIRC. These guys are gods in the LITERAL sense of the word, a Space marine can move SO GOD DAMN FAST the naked eye can't see them, WHILE WEARING FULL ON POWER ARMOR. And a Primarch can do the same to a regular space marine, moving so fast that even the vastly superior senses of a space marine can't perceive it. The sheer speed strength and brutality a legion of Space Marines could unleash are absolutely immense. A Space Marine could easily rip a battle tank apart with their bare hands if they could just get the right grip. And again, a Primarch are to a space marine what a space marine is to a normal man.

Most Space Marines have killed before they were even picked as recruits. It depends on the chapter, but many pick recruits from worlds of conflict. Maybe feral tribes that are at war with each other, or from street gangs and survivors from war zones. On some worlds the recruitment might be a huge event where the young elite compete in combat and endurance and the winners might be picked if the Space Marines like what they see. A Space Marine does not have much of free time. They would have to look in a dictionary to figure out what vacation and retirement is. Look up "Daily rituals of a Space Marine". They fight because that is what is asked of them, that is their duty to the Emperor, the Imperium, their Chapter and to humanity's survival. And they enjoy it, some just a bit more than others. In one book some Imperial Guard officers talk about the arrival of a Space Marine chapter and one is overjoyed while the older and more experienced one, that have fought next to Space marines before, warns his friend. "They are recruited as young teenagers, just at the age when you believe yourself to be immortal and that you already know everything. This mindset is then enhanced over and over so it never leaves them and instead guides them. We are on the same side, but do not see them as allies, they know they are better than us and will care nothing for our losses if we are in their path to glory"

I would suggest Arch (or Arch Warhammer) and Luetin09 for warhammer lore. And The Explore Series and Volgun for SCP. As to your last question about the marines and their mentality. It varies immensely depending on the Chapter (think of them as different armies under the same government). But in essence, mental manipulation and conditioning are massive parts of becoming a space marine. Not only are they being made ready to fight (like any soldier are to my knowledge), but they are also both prepared to face things that will break normal peoples psyche, but also conditioned to not see any issues with any action necessary to achieve objectives. Furthermore, surviving the transformation into a Space Marine is treated as the monumental achievement it is. They survived trails that kill the majority of participants, just to see if they are worthy. They are augmented with some of the most powerful genetampering the imperium has, which incidentally also kills a vast majority of aspirants. Becoming a Space Marine is almost like ascending (figuratively), and you are met at the other side by people who know and survived the same. They call you "Brother", and they become your family, because anyone else cannot relate to you. They cannot imagine the horror, hardship and pain you have overcome to get there. Space Marines do have individual personalities, but those personalities are can at times seam inhuman. Their bodies are augmented so thoroughly that they way their minds work, are changed. Also brainwashing and mindwiping is a thing in 40k, and is used liberally by the imperium.

If you want a break down, the galaxy (not universe) is split up among the varying races. Humans Imperial - 60% Humans non-imperial - 05% Orc all-tribes - 20% Necrons - 10% Everyone Else - 05% Tyranids - galactic invader, doesn't "take" worlds for keeps as much as literally eats everything on the planet (even the air) and moves on to the next buffet/planet in a matter of weeks or months.

He also does videos based on Events in the universe as well, and has done some videos about achievements and defeats for mankind, and videos about the Emperor and so on. So if you really want to get into the deep lore, could give his videos a watch. And he has a lot of them now lol. kzbin.infoplaylists PS- "In Exterminatus Extremis. Some may question your right to destroy ten billion people. Those who understand realise that you have no right to let them live!" Daemons, or 'Demons' as people generally call them, it only takes 1 to accidentlly be called onto a planet, to turn the entire planet into a Demonic legion of and foothold that could destroy all of reality, within just a few DAYS. So yes. Killing the entire planet, is the BEST option to fight against the Corruption that can easily spread and cause untold death across all of reality.

as far as space marine individuality goes, they’re all their own person. However they’ve been indoctrinated to be very single minded. Disagreements happen often however. Mostly between space marines of different chapters (badab war for example) though even amongst one single chapter some might have different views. Space marines are far remote from mankind both in mind and body but most still retain some empathy towards humans. A few space marines even went against their Legion and primarch during the Horus heresy and stayed loyal (look up ancient Rylanor, pretty badass dude) Concerning wether they enjoy the fight etc... It really depends on the chapters. Space wolves are essentially space vikings and they love the fight. Ultramarines are more into logistics and see their work as a necessity and something that will help mankind as a whole. Salamanders and lamenters are mostly just super nice and into protecting civilians above anything. Marine malevolents don’t care about collateral damage at all. Dark angels do it for honor. etc...

27:03 depends on Chapter. Think of Space Marines Chapter like the Regiments of the late Regimental System, each of them have their own traditions, culture, recruitment sites doctrines etc, even though most of them are guided to some degree by the Codex Astartes. You have everything among there, from Chapters that recent their service to baseline humans, to Chapters that would sacrifice their lives at any moment for the sake of saving even a single human, from Chapters that attempt toexecute war in the most clean and ascetic way, to Chapters that ravel on the close quarters bloodshed of disembowing rebels with a chainsaw-sword (chainsword) in the most graphic ways while covering his foes unit with the innards of whatever his chainsword is making a mess off. A thousand Chapters, each with their own ways to war... and the vast majority of them have their fair share of personalities within, from marines that truly believe their doctrines, to marines that sinically see it as just a mandate to kill and destroy, with everything in between, including those who try to justify to themselves why what they do is right and why their doctrines are aceptable

"Do they have their own personality?" Yes and no, they are made from humans who have their own wishes and thoughts, but trough evaluation, trail, initiation, geneseed and training they are molded in the image of the legion they follow. That being said, it's not like they're being mindcontrolled by those with higher ranks. For example during the Horus Heresy (when half of the primarchs turned against the Emperor), there were parts of the traitor legions who stayed loyal, and part of the loyal legions who turned traitor. When talking directly about going to war, and wanting to go fight.. it's like they're made for it, literally. To quote the Emperor "And they shal have no fear". But they do have doubs and internal troubles, and the diffferent chapters have widely different mentalities in how war should be waged, what is acceptible and so on. If you want to dive into that, check out Helsreach, it's a 13 part series. It's a very different style than Astartes, but it's more of a story and is based on a book. The Feudal structure of the Imperium 100% neccesary simply because of the size of it. Even with FTL space travel it can take months or even years to cross even a portion the Imperium. Theres no way a single central power can govern the individual needs of the thousands of individual sectors, let alone the myriad systems and millions of planets. So power is divvied out into smaller and smallest groups so no one of them gets overwhelmed trying to direct them all. This, as a consequence, makes it impossible to enforce uniformity but it also makes sure that most decisions don't get bogged down in a bureaucracy that takes too long to decide on even the most simple matters. Let's put it into a scenario. You're a planetary governor and theres a massive armada of aliens bearing down on your system and you and the other planetary governors don't have the manpower to repel them. Without the Feudal system, you'd have to send a reinforcement request to the administrative head of the Imperium back on Earth. Your reinforcement request isn't even looked at for several years as there is a backlog of requests from a galaxy spanning empire ahead of yours. Eventually your request is noticed and a fleet is dispatched, all they find however are the ruins of your planets that are already years dead. Alternatively, in a feudal system you can send that same reinforcement request to whatever local government or dynasty that rules your sector instead and they can organize fleets from other systems near you to help because they're not drowning in data from across the whole galaxy.

About Exterminatus: It is only used in the most dire of circumstances, and there are many ways of going about it. Orbital bombardment just destroys everything on the surface, but leaves the planet intact for recolonization later. Virus bombing releases a pathogen known as the Life-Eater Virus that reduces all biological substances to organic sludge and methane gas, which is usually then ignited. These planets can still be recolonized, if only after a few centuries. Fire bombing ignites the atmosphere itself, making recolonization difficult, but not impossible. The most extreme measure is the use of Cyclonic torpedoes, which rip a hole in reality and destroy the planet utterly. (fun fact, the psychic scream created by this last form of Exterminatus is used to create an incredibly powerful artillery shell. Waste not want not)

Everyone basically hates one another, Orks fight everyone and even other Orks. Chaos Gods fight Everyone and even other chaos gods. On another note space marine chapters operate within the guidelines of the Codex Astartes. A rule book written by the Primarch Roboute guilliman. Marines are very diverse in personality and chapters have different personalities. Such as the Salamanders chapter who are seen as the most human space marines. They are craftsmen and decorate their armor with flames and distinguish themselves with hides and trophies. The carcharadons chapter are brutal cold killers who patrol the void of outside the galaxy. Unlike most chapters they are fleet-based with no home world so they undergo the red tithe. Basically kidnapping people to serve them as slaves while also finding suitable candidates for gene seeds. What I am saying is Rank and file space marines have persoanlity and can sometimes show it. It just depends on the chapter and what said chapter sees as appropriate.

Dark Angels threw out the Codex Astartes’ specifications for a 1st and 2nd Company in favour of the Deathwing and Ravenwing respectively. White Scars have the largest abundance of fast attack vehicles such as bikes, speeders and fliers. Space Wolves don’t see the Codex to be of much use to the way in which they operate and so use their own. Imperial Fists don’t change too much from the Codex’s teachings, although one of their successors, the Black Templars, pretty much went the way of the Space Wolves in that they just did whatever they thought was best for them. Blood Angels switch around the designations of Reserve Companies 8 and 9 to help their newly inducted Marines resolve pent up aggression. In addition, the Death Company is for those BAs who fell to the Black Rage. Iron Hands rename the companies as Clans and their Techmarines combine their duties with that of Company Captains, Apothecaries and Chaplains, making them Iron Fathers. Ultramarines are by far the most faithful to the Codex, seeing as their Primarch was the one who written it. They quote verse and chapter of the Codex whenever they can and punish those who stray from its teachings. Salamanders have the highest abundance of (combi) flamers and meltas among the 9 original Loyalist Space Marine Legions-turned-Chapters. Raven Guard are generally only faithful to the Codex as far as organisational structure is concerned, but they fall back on their own skills and experiences as scouts, assassins and troubleshooters when in battle, relying on stealth, subterfuge, rapid deployment and guerilla warfare to control the battlefield and gain advantage over their opponents. They were also encouraged to take initiative and think for themselves instead on relying on a centralised centre of command, which made them very tactically flexible and extremely potent in small numbers. This was probably the way that Guilliman intended for the Codex to be used, as a guide for organisational structure rather than as a bloody holy book. Interestingly, he and Corax, the Raven Guard’s Primarch, got along so swimmingly that Corax naturally adopted the Codex and some of its teachings were brought on by the virtual sparring sessions and simulations that Corax and Guilliman often had. Corax had won 3 of them, but Guilliman adapted and learned from his mistakes. He probably put accounts of those experience in the Codex. Upon Guilliman’s return, the emergence of the Tyranids and the Necrons and the creation of the Primaris Space Marines, Guilliman said, “Fuck it,” threw out his original draft, started revisions and decreed to all Space Marines that they can choose whether or not to follow the Space Book as long as it was effective and got shit done.

40K has an obscene amount of lore, and it is dense. Can it be cut into bite-size chunks, simplified and crayon-flavored enough for a jarhead to grasp? Not sure. It is 38,000 years in the future, and shit has happened. Mankind grew in a Golden Age and spread across the Galaxy. Then an Event Occurred (something like an AI rebellion) (around year 20,000 or so) and human society broke. Think Mad Max, but everywhere. This lasts a few thousand years. Then this big dude with magic powers and flowing black hair steps out of the shadows with the goal of uniting mankind- first on Earth, then the entire galaxy. He gathers troops, builds a lab and creates genetic super-soldiers (Thunder Warriors) that are huge but unstable. He eventually -conquers- unites all of Earth. Conveniently, all of his unstable, hyper-violent Thunder warriors just happened to die to the last man in the final battle and were most definitely not wiped out by the Emperors personal bodyguard. Now, he creates 20 perfect dudes, masters of warfare and administration, to be his generals in his fight to retake the galaxy. He uses his own genetic code, but adds in some tid-bits to make each “Primarch” unique and tend toward different specialties. Then he used their genetic code to create the next generation of super-soldiers. Space Marines. 20 legions, each enhanced with the genetic code of their Primarch. The Primarchs got snatched as babies and scattered all over the galaxy in their cribs. The Emperor mounts his Great Crusade to unite the Galaxy and find his lost Primarchs. Eventually, he finds all 20, but 2 had some weird shit going on (family secret- they don’t talk about it so we don’t know what), but he has the 18 we know about. All went through some serious shit since being taken as babies, and most of them grew up to rule the planets they were dumped on. They are just that good. Most of them. Angron sucks. There are now 18 Space Marine Legions. Each Legion as tens or hundreds of thousands of Space Marines. Each Legion is led by the Primarch whose "gene-seed" (genetic code) was used to create them. Once all his Primarchs are on board and up to speed, he figures his Crusade is well in hand and jets to work on his next project. But it turns out his chief Primarch general has done daddy issues and feels abandoned, gets suckered and tricked into thinking he should be in charge. He gets 8 of his Primarch brothers on board, and now it is a 9v9 super civil war. The big E pulls out the win, barely, and he has to be trapped on his life support chair and hope his kids can keep things going the way he wants (hint- they can’t). Loyal Legions: Dark Angels (hold your jokes), Ultramarines, White Scars, Raven Guard, Imperial Fists, Iron Hands, Salamanders, Space Wolves, and Blood Angels. Traitor Legions: Luna Wolves/Sons of Horus, Iron Warriors, Death Guard, World Eaters, Word Bearers, Night Lords, Thousand Sons, Emperor's Children, and the Alpha Legion (hold your jokes again). So, we move forward 10,000 years. A religious order has grown around Big-E, which he would have hated. The 9 loyal Primarchs have each been killed (mostly killed) or lost through time. The various races, each of whom thinks they should be running the galaxy) are fighting each other and mankind. We have: Eldar: old space elves who were created long ago to fight an even older war who were super-good, but got bored, murder fucked a chaos god into existence who lives to feed on their souls. They are pretty much wiped out, but there are factions trying to survive and rebuild. Orks: mobile plants, grown from fungus. They live to fight, and will happily fight each other if there is no one else around. They get smarter when you get more of them organized, and their tech works just because they think it should. About as hard to get rid of as Athlete's foot, and for the same reason. Necrons: old beings who sold their souls to get metal bodies, then killed their gods for getting screwed on that deal and use pieces of their gods to power their weapons. They lost their war and went into hiding, sleeping out the time underground on thousands of worlds. Long forgotten, everyone is freaking out when these dudes started waking up and wondered who all these squatters in their galaxy were. Tau: Newcomers on the block. Blue fish boys who talk big about The Greater Good. Willing to work with alien races, just as long as they accept the Tau are in charge. Think space communism. Only race willing to work peacefully with other races. Often thought of as the only “good guys” in 40K, turns out the Tau ruling class are brainwashing the rest of the Tau and subject races into thinking they are all on the same side. They decide what “the greater good” is. Tyranids: Space bugs from outside the galaxy, moving through, eating planets. Perfect predators, adapt to surroundings, all that jazz. They eat entire biospheres. There are different factions, and I barely touched on chaos and the warp, but this is long enough.

One thing worth pointing out, is that countless billions, if not trillions of imperial citizens will live out their whole lives in relative peace and security, akin a to a normal life today on Earth. The actual odds of your planet being invading by Orks, Daemons, Tyranids, or some other nightmarish faction is actually pretty low due to just how big the Milky Way galaxy is. The reason why it seems like every story focuses on the endless war is because that makes for a better story.

@Brakamar, or else! Think the blocks from the latest judge dredd movie, only each one is the size of a city, there are massive factories built into the basement that everyone has to work in, and the gang violence is a thousand times worse. That's basically a hive city.

the imperium of man lays clam to the entire Milkyway galaxy. However, though they say they own everything they truly don't as there are sections of uncharted territories, entire systems that are under the control of xenos (slang for aliens). One major factor in the lost for projection by the imperium is the Eye of Terror which is a hell portal with tendrils that split the galaxy almost in two as well as the bureaucracy of the imperium makes it hard to muster any significant force as everyone says "my problem is worse" worsening the already degrading empire.
@HubiKoshi
@HubiKoshi 3 жыл бұрын
The thing about Imperium's decline is that it's been in decline for the last 10,000 years. It was born 10,000 years ago when the God Emperor of Mankind launched The Great Crusade, a massive conquest, to reunite all human worlds and bring them under the banner of the Imperium. But then the Horus Heresy (a massive civil war) happened and the Emperor was basically put on life-support and lost most of his ability to rule the Imperium. Ever since then it was in decline due to the spread of superstition and ignorance. But the Imperium is HUGE, it controls most of our galaxy and has access to so many resources that even when in decline it's still too big to be brought down easily. Losing billions of soldiers in a single war is like a drop in the bucket for the Imperium. And it IS fighting an endless war against all the other factions, one of which (The Tyranids) came from Outside our galaxy in order to devour it.

One of the horrible ironies of the Imperium is that the Emperor never wanted to be considered a god, and never wanted religion to exist. He wanted a secular Imperium free of religion, which he believed was the cause of division among the Imperium. When he was nearly slain in the Horus Heresy, the religion of the Imperial Creed formed around him completely outside of his will, he has nothing to do with it. What makes this irony even worse is that 1.) the oppressive theocratic dictatorship is _why_ the Imperium still exists 10,000 years after his internment upon the Golden Throne, and 2.) the collective faith of humanity worshipping him as a god has made him _ridiculously_ powerful as a psyker, even moreso than when he was alive and walking. Also, if there is one thing to know about Warhammer fans is that we _love_ talking about the lore. As for the last question about Space Marines, a lot of answers for a lot of points. -While Space Marines are individuals and are capable of individual initiative, as part of their training they are indoctrinated in their Chapter’s culture and warrior-philosophy. The Ultramarines, for example, are zealous adherents to the Codex Astartes, where the Space Wolves regard the Codex as just a dusty tome. The Salamanders will position themselves as literal human shields to protect humans, where some other Chapters will mow down civilians in the crossfire without hesitation if it means killing the enemy. -They are still, however, single-minded in their devotion to the Imperium, the Emperor, and the mission. They will lay down their lives without hesitation to ensure the completion of the mission, the death of the enemy, or both. If you want a Marines Chapter that enjoys the fight, however, you can look no further than the wild and nearly-feral Space Wolves (the Blood Angels should not be considered to “enjoy” the fight. While they and their successors are capable of blood rages and massacre one would expect from the followers of the Chaos gods, it is from a crippling side effect of other...issues...known to the Blood Angels gene-seed).

Everyone hates each other, 40k is an "everyone versus everyone" situation. Just imagine World War II (or III if you like) where nobody really gets to be "neutral". So if an enemy of the Imperium attacks it, they might expose themselves to their other enemies who are also enemies of the Imperium. Not to mention that the Imperium's territory is such a horrible case of border gore that mapmakers have given up showing borders and just mark points of influence, as you see by the maps shown. If its too depressing for you that's ok. Nobody holds it against you. We don't want people in the community/fanbase who don't like 40k the way it is. But while it comes off initially as depressing and hopeless, that is part of the appeal. Its not a hunky-dory Noblebright Star Trek adventure written by a sheltered "intellectual" with no grounding, nor a high-minded "Space Fantasy" mythos like Star Wars (or what Star Wars used to be anyway), its a dark, gritty, ruthless franchise. To give you a metaphor, if Star Trek is civilian life as a rich kid, then 40k is life in the Marines coming from a dirt-poor background.

The Emperor wanted to foster an empire of scientific knowledge and progressiveness in regards to technology and understanding. He actually abhorred religious worship and severely punished one of his primarchs: the primarch Lorgar, for fostering religious beliefs that the Emperor was a god. I would recommend the warhammer 40k lore videos made by Luetin above any others as I believe he goes into much greater detail as well as having a more competent breakdown of the lore and variables that develop within the lore over time.

"This just sounds depressing" - welcome to Warhammer 40k. "Why is like that?" - Because it's Warhammer 40k. It's a bleak setting, on purpose. Everything sucks. Life is meaningless. Joy does not exist unless you're an Ork. There is only war. Everybody loses. Nobody wins. ... Except Orks. They just want to fight and bash skulls. They're living their best life. But even then, there's tragedy in them, in their story.

Once you get past the main races Orks, Eldar, Tyranids, Necrons, Chaos/Demons, and Tau. Once you get back to Humanity I would say in order of importance do The Emperor of Mankind, The 20 Primarchs, The Custodes, The Astartes/Space Marines, and then finally the Imperial Guard. Thats at least how I would say to do it but you seem to be more interested in the Astartes so it fine if you want to jump around I am just glad we have another brother coming into the fold of the fandom.

Do yourself a favor and watch the 2 ''Every Faction in Warhammer 40k explained'' videos (Part 1 & 2) by Bricky. He explains the basics for Warhammer 40k newbies, in a very comprehensive & humorous way. The Warhammer 40k Universe has a lore that is so extensive, it's almost ridiculous and if you go down the rabbitthole, you can spend lots of time with it. I can also recommend the official Warhammer 40k Wiki which has lots of very detailed articles. To give you a quick overview: *Imperium of Men*: Hoomans, theocratic, xenophobic space fascists, who worship the corpse of their vegetable God-Emperor and have an itchy trigger finger. These are the *GOOD GUYS* ! *Chaos* : The literal Demon-Gods of Chaos, their legions of Demons and Chaos-worshipping traitors of the Imperium.(heretics) *VERY BAD GUYS* *Orks* : brutal, barbaric, bloodthirsty Space-Orks that are an ancient ''weapon-race'' (half humanoid/half fungus). Dumb as shit, very resilient and also the comic relief of the setting. *BAD GUYS BUT ALSO FUNNY, BUT MOSTLY BAD* *Eldar* : Space-Elves, who destroyed their galactic empire by literally creating a Chaos God with too much blood orgies. Very technologically advanced, super arrogant and on the verge of extintion. *Abiguous at best, don't trust them* *Dark Eldar* : The BDSM-loving cousins of the vanilla Eldar, who are still indulging in all kinds of kinky blood orgies and other depraved shieeet. (Think Cenobite-Space Elves) *VERY VERY BAD GUYS* *Tyranids* : Think Xenomorphs from Alien meets Bugs from Starship Troopers, just want to eat everything. (And yes, the Zerg from Stracraft are an actual rip-off of the Tyranids, *not* the other way around). *VERY VERY BAD GUYS* *Necrons* : Egyptian-themed ancient Space Robots, with technology that defies the laws of physics and a hatred for all organic life. *ALSO, BAD GUYS* *Tau* : Naive Space-Communists, they don't straight up kill you, instead they brainwash you. *NOBODY LIKES THE TAU*
