Respectfully you aren’t a Marine, you have no idea the character and types of people who can earn that title. I’ve met plenty of fellow Marines like Civ Div who succeeded because they weren’t placed into a toxic unit or had friends or leadership who they were able to lean on. The Marine Corps can push people towards excellence just as much as it can stomp potentially viable Marines down a dark path.

Being in The Marines take a toll on your body, even if you don't feel it the first 4 years your in. We all jumped out of 7-tons with full kit, hiked, and did the crazy haze PT that wears your body down over time. The VA is there to acknowledge those long-term effects and compensate you. You can not take the disability, and suffer from the pain your whole life, or you can take what you're owed and keep living your life. On the "waiting to get out to train comment". One thing that happens to some service members is that after bootcamp they end up somehow getting on the wrong side of someone in charge, sometimes deserved sometimes not, and that person makes their life miserable. They no longer have time to do things like go to the gym on their own to bulk up because they are constantly tasked and harassed with meaningless tasks just to occupy their time. As it goes on it only gets worse as they lose the will to better themselves because of constant poor treatment and their performance degrades leading to more poor treatment in a bad spiral. That's why someone like him after getting out was able to clear his head of bad thoughts, devote time to self improvement, and become better than he was. Hazing has its place especially in the military, despite what some say, but there is a big difference between hazing and some of the outright abuse that happens.

The Corps has a history of doing this to their own. Commands will allow this hazing by sweeping it under the rug, and sadly, those receiving the abuse become targets for those around them, simply because it is "fun" to watch another Marine get set up for failure. Leadership vacuums are a breeding ground for this type of behavior, and a primary example is of the MCRD Parris Island Drill Instructor who was sentenced to 10+ years in Ft Leavenworth. This young former Marine Infantryman, took a crappy experience, and made a different life for himself. Another example of the Corps giving itself a black eye. USMC 0311 1980-1984

Toxic leaders are not just a problem isolated to the Marine Corps but to the US military in general. My perspective as a retired Navy veteran is that in the military the officer leadership is politically driven and they are rarely true leaders worth following, who are promoted not through meritocracy but by favoritism, who was their first, and those who do the bare minimum to not get fired. The Chief’s Mess has been compromised by mediocre mentors who do the bare minimum and don’t find value in mentoring young officers to be better leaders than before. The lower enlisted that are coming in have little to no patriotism for their country and have been babied their entire life creating an unrealistic sense of entitlement and narcissism who want awards and praise for doing their fucking job. Our military is crap and screwed in the next war. There are great officers, great chiefs, and great sailors… it’s just that those get burned out, forced out, or left out. And it’s those who are left are so stupid that people only follow them out of morbid curiosity.
