I first became aware of Marinella (Mar-ree-NELL-ah) in 1969 at the age of 13. All the top singers would perform in nightclubs. The music would start around 11 pm and go on until 4:00 am or later, especially in the summer. What magic in her voice. How wonderful to learn that she was still going strong in her 80’s and performing as far away as Australia. A long way away from that nightclub in Glyfada. It’s especially satisfying, now that I have a better understanding of singing to appreciate her voice and to have our commentator point out details I hadn’t noticed. Thanks for granting your friends wish and gifting this voice to social media at large.

All the old (especially) Greek songs have amazing music/lyrics, full of emotion and feeling, so much so that they 'speak' to you and convey their meaning even without knowing the language. They transcend all language barriers.
@wonderlandian84652 жыл бұрын
Dude you are reacting to Greek music? That's amazing! Greek music is one of the most underrated in the world imo. It has is so much interesting music history and culture , from the orchestration to the way of singing and performing. This genre of music is called Laiko which means "Song of the people" it's called that because it derives from Rebetiko which is an even older genre of music which was created by the poor class in Greece from the late 19th century to the 1950s. Rebetiko was Greek urban music for lack of a better word. Similarly to other urban subcultural musical forms such as the blues , Hip Hop etc Rebetiko grew out of particular urban circumstances and it's lyrics often reflected that talking about crime, drink, drugs, poverty, prostitution and violence The womb of rebetika was the jail and the hash den. It was there that the early rebetes (Rebetiko artists) created their songs. They sang in quiet, hoarse voices, unforced, one after the other, each singer adding a verse which often bore no relation to the previous verse, and a song often went on for hours. There was no refrain, and the melody was simple and easy. One rebetis accompanied the singer with a bouzouki (it's like a miny guitar with 3 strings) or a baglamas (a smaller version of the bouzouki, very portable, easy to make in prison and easy to hide from the police), and perhaps another, moved by the music, would get up and dance. The early rebetika songs, particularly the love songs, were based on Greek folk songs and the songs of the Greeks of Smyrna and Constantinople. Laiko was a latter commercialized version of Rebetiko music. It was criticized by Rebetiko artists as being "watered down" version of their work and although true since Laiko overall stayed away from the harsher lyrics and themes that rebetiko was all about in order to reach the richer class and a wider audience it has also produced amazing music and artists (Marinella being one of them) in it's own right and it did indeed popularize that style of singing not only all over Greece but across the world as Laiko music and artists started spreading the sound cross country. (Marinella being one of the main ones who popularized it) I talked about the orchestration being it's own unique thing. In Rebetiko the main instrument is a bouzouki or a baglamas as i mentioned above and that was pretty much it especially in the early days, in later Rebetiko bands you might also find guitars, accordions among other instruments. Laiko has a much larger range of instruments which offers a bigger variation in sound but while also maintaining certain rhythms and patterns from Rebetiko (Bouzouki remains a must). The singing has it's own unique style and rules as well. That little run you mentioned at 5:06 is a staple in Laiko and rebetiko singing. You WILL be judged on how you are able to perform those runs if you are singing either genre as well as other characteristics like voice cracks (more prominent in Rebetiko). I could keep going since later on out of Laiko came Entehno which then evolved into it's own thing and was one of the most popular genres of music in Greece during the 90s and 2000s but i've already rambled too much in my comment so i'll leave it there :P I'd LOVE to recommend you 3 live performances from each genre tho to react too cause i'm sure you will enjoy them. Rebetiko - Kompania (Ιουλία Καραπατάκη) - Τσιγγάνα Laiko - ♫ Δεν ξέρω πόσο σ΄ αγαπώ - Νατάσα Θεοδωρίδου & Ειρήνη Τουμπάκη Entehno - MELISSES - Γιατί | ΝΥΧΤΑ ΣΤΟΝ ΡΥΘΜΟ Copy and paste those on KZbin to find the videos. I'd love to see you react to them, not enough people are reacting to Greek music on here and it's a shame. Anyways this is a long comment, hope you read it. Greatly enjoyed your reaction like usual :)

Close to her are the following: Xaris Alexiou ( Harrys Alexiou ) , Eleytheria Arvanitaki , Glykeria and a very special , unique talent called Sotiria Mpelou . The video with Marinella that you describe as ‘video pieces of white and black’ is the musical part of a Greek movie from the 60’s, the ‘ golden era ‘ of the Greek cinema. I see you really like Marinella and you can easily relate to the message each of her songs sends out. These songs, the ‘ classical ‘ songs with bouzouki were an integral part of these Greek movies and many great singers appeared in these, while their songs where a huge success. Check these movies, if you want to find out more. They are being played on and on in Greece and every Greek of any age has watched them. Thank you for showing to the world a piece of our not so modern and not the well known ancient culture!

Thanks, I like your insight of one of her earlier songs 'Pali tha klapso' (I will cry again) from 1969. It is one of her classic songs from a movie. *And yes...Greek music, (Like Portuguese Fado or Spanish Flamenco) is very influenced by Arabic &, Turkish melodies & vocal techniques. That's why they use very quick and unique runs and dips. Good point about the lyrics: Greek songs are often deep in lyrics and philosophical
