as an infantryman facing overwhelming odds in Marjah 2010, we all carried bayonets, and returning home ppl asked why?... my first answer is why not?.... then my next answer is we were close to running out of ammo many times, that's simply the next step except with bayonets attached, we kept a 10rd back up plus 3 rds, for suicide plus 2, but to have to fix bayonets in this modern day is pretty insane!!!!! PPL ask why not just retreat or fall back???? Well honestly we don't know how!!! None of us were ever trained to fall back or retreat!!!!! WE ARE MARINES!!!! WE WERE NEVER TRAINED TO GIVE UP!!!! People who talk about retreating have no idea on how negatively it could impact to our national security. And yes, them included. The existence of the US Military and its discipline not only have a functional role but a disuasive one too. No one mentally healthy will dare to attack an establisment of well prepared and experienced fighting forces. Some don't really understand the reason why the Marine Corps and the other branches exist. Some have never traveled overseas, to screwed up countries, to understand what shit really is like. They think shit is having to use a facemask to go for a Starbuck and work/study remotely, through a computer. First world problems are heaven for third world foreigners, especially the ones dealing with their own local enemies.

Austin Griffin: Each U.S. Marine is a weapon. The rifle and bayonet are simply tools used by the Marine to accomplish a particular task. "Semper fidelis" refers not only to the Marine but also to the tools used by the Marine which are ever faithful.

I never served in the armed forces but I respect them because they are the reason we have freedom (at least in most areas in the United States). I had two Grandfathers that served in World War II and my Father in Law served in the Marines. I try to always remember what they fought for.

If I have my timeline correct, one of the final shots in this commercial with the CH-53 having evil eyes nose art was taken on my deployment with VMM-163(REIN) on the 11th MEU during WESTPACK 16-17. We did good work on that deployment. I miss those guys more than I thought I would. If I was physically able i would have reenlisted years ago. SEMPER FI DEVILS

Vietnam was not the mission it was the objective. To engulf the north Vietnamese in such a war that, it could not spread beyond to Australia, New Zealand Taiwan etc. The mission was successful. That's why Australia sent 40,000 troops to stop the spread of communism not to win in the objective.
