The National Museum of the Marine Corps is constantly evolving, and continually collecting and preserving Marine Corps history. The museum is home to more than a thousand artifacts, from tactical aircraft to uniform buttons from the Civil War. 'Battleground' takes a closer look at the interactive exhibits, and the sights and sounds - and even smells - of Marines in combat.

My memories of my career in the Marine Corps is part of Marine Corps history. I served from October 1973 - October 1993. Since I am part of Marine Corps history I was one of the original docents of 105 to get this museum started in 2006. I had never seen a museum quit like this before Marines of my era had a chance to vote on designs for the museum back in the 70s. If you are not a Marine don't bother to comment because Marines deal in the facts scuttlebutt doesn't have a place in the Marine Corps. Semper Fi GySgt Retired

That place is truly incredible. Definitely a place to take your old man or grandfather if they were prior service, or a Marine or not. They have melted pieces of glass from Nagasaki, the actual flag that was raised over Iwo Jima (can't take a picture of it with the flash on lol), an m16 laser range, pieces of the WTC and the Pentagon, just to name a few artifacts. Again, definitely a place to visit before you die. 12 out of 10.

The bright light eventually degrades the fabric of the flag. The flag from Fort McHenry (the one that inspired Francis Scott Key, they say) is shown under very dim light. Other artworks, like the Mona Lisa, are also marked as "no flash photography".

I am a former Marine. Unless you get a want to in you YOU WILL FAIL. I want you to be a brother but your must do it for yourself not because of the reasons you give. If you don't do that and it gets to the point where you are hitting your limit and you have just started you will quit. You WILL be moved several orders past your limit. Be ready.

I love the history of my Corps. My uncle was a Korean marine and a bad ass. He’d been blown up a few times out there and made it home. He died last year and I’ll never forget when I went and got his campaign medals and an EGA and pinned it on him, he grabbed my hand and told me we were family beyond blood and brothers. One of my most cherished memories. Semper Fi devildog.

Thank you for this great tour, now high on my bucket list. My spirit and love of the Marines started by knowing Charles E. McCune, Johnstown, PA. He served in World War 11 and was highly decorated by the Corp. I always thought his eyes glistened, rather smiling. Charlie had a glass eye for keeping the enemy back in Japan and eliminating many of the enemy. My continued love came in Franklin Borough, Johnstown, PA, where Michael Strank was born, one of six who placed our flag on Iwo Jima.

Visited today. What I enjoyed was the Marines visiting. I hesitate to say young Marines out of respect to them. The are as much a man as I am at my age. So impressed with the respect ingrained in them. You just don't meet people like Marines. I was so humbled as an old Marine given so much respect when I had the respect for them. Confession. I was a so called old Core. Not many females. The ones present changed my attitude. It's been a progression but females are providing themselves and have earned my respect. Forgive my scepticism.

I’m a grandson to a Marine and he was like an 0312 Machine Gunner and he served more than 20 years in the Marines and he was stationed at Camp Lejeune and he fought in the Vietnam war and he never talked about the war and he finished as an E-9 (Master Gunnery Sergeant) and ever since I was little I’ve always wanted to be a Marine and he gave me his Purple Heart and he was shot three times one in his leg one his shoulder and one that hit his radio but my grandfather never talked about the Vietnam war so I never asked him about it and I have three reasons why I’ve always wanted to be a Marine 1 - because I saw all the marine corps commercials 2 - because I want to honor my grandfather as a Marine because he was a Marine himself for more than 20 years 3 - I want to fight for the fallen brothers and sisters that died in Kabul Afghanistan on August 26 2021 Marines Corps : Sgt Johanny Rosario Pichardo Marines Corps : Sgt Nicole Gee Marines Corps : Lance Corporal David Lee Espinoza Marines Corps : Lance Corporal Kareem M Nikoui Marines Corps : Lance Corporal Dylan R Merola Marines Corps : Lance Corporal Rylee J McCollum Marines Corps : Corporal Hunter Lopez Marines Corps : Corporal Daegan W Page Marines Corps : Humberto Sánchez Marines Corps : Staff Sgt David T Hoover Navy : Navy Corpsman Petty Officer 3rd class Maxton W Soviak Army : Staff Sgt Ryan C Knauss And I’m a cousin and brother in law to marines And I’m also a cousin and brother in law to marine’s like my brother in law was Radio communication same as my older cousins MOS Radio Communication and so I’m a grandson and brother in law to Marines and my grandfather fought in the Vietnam war and he was a Machine Gunner in the Marines he was stationed at Camp Lejeune than he was in Hawaii at K-Bay and Vietnam was the war my grandfather was shipped out too as well and really ever since I was little I’ve always wanted to be a Marine Oorah

Visited this amazing place after our Washington visit. So AMAZING. You guys pulled up these mini robots at the entrance. Nice mini robots. So I asked one Marine at the Entrance, "How can I be a better American?" and his response was, "carry a flag." Alright back to citizenship: Innovation is two already invented inventions together. Let's get to millions to fund out Marine non profit organizations. - love you forever - Henri

As a black male here in the United States I have to thank my beloved Marine Corps. Because as those that may know we have a problem with crime in this nation. We label people by race when it comes to crime. But when it comes to those moments when a mistake can be made in that flash of a moment when it comes to that moment when the judge asks you did you think before you did what you did sir when you committed that crime. My answer would be yes and the judge would ask what did you think sir? My answer would be my I thought of my beloved Marine Corps I can not Dishonor my Beloved Marine Corps. Most would not understand most would say it's crazy. But I'm not in prison I'm not on probation I have my Civil Rights my Constitutional Rights. I can say that as a black male I can be looked upon as a positive role model. Everyday for the last 45 years since I earned that Eagle Globe & Anchor I eat sleep and think of my beloved Marine Corps don't ask me why I can't explain I've lost 2 wife's but gained so much more in life when it comes to the simple things. The Corps taught me that. The Corps taught me respect for others. The Marine Corps taught me so much but most of all it taught that I am a United States Marine ever day for the rest of my life Nad no one can take that away! HAPPY 247 BIRTHDAY UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS. Ava8harrierusmc1

I grew up in Maryland (Montgomery County) and never got to see this before I left the area and moved to Florida. How odd. Well, I also never got up the Washington Monument or to Arlington either. I just never got around to it. Maybe someday I can go there, and I can show my husband (who, admittedly, is an Army veteran).

I am finishing a book called The Secret Camera, about a China Marine who was stationed at a rifle and machine gun range subsidiary base in northern China, before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. It was during the era of the Boxer Rebellion and the American embassy in Peking had a Marine Embassy Guard detachment (what the movie "55 Days At Peking" is based on). General Puller may have been there at the same time or close to it. There was another town/city that had Marines and also this firearms range base the author of the book was stationed at. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, which the author and his compatriots didn't hear of until the next day, they were waiting for orders as to what they were supposed to do. Interestingly, the Japanese Army already had troops in China for their China war. In fact there was a Japanese Army unit of about 40,000 stationed near the range the author was part of. There were 40 Marines in the unit. The Marines didn't have much interaction with them prior to the start of the war. They saw the Japanese heavy hand with Chinese civilians in the town nearest the base, but could not say anything. Subsequently, the unit was ordered to comply with the Japanese. Generally, the Marines in China were considered part of the Embassy and there was an agreement that the embassy personnel would be returned to the states. The Range personnel did not seem to fall into that category and were ordered to comply with the Japanese Army. The author and his fellow Marines became prisoners of war from December 8, 1941 to the end of the war in a prison camp in Japan. They were POW's for the 'entire war.'
