the backwards p-speed mechanic actually has some extra hidden value in the GBA port as well, where you can use e-reader cards to get the cape feather as a usable item and instantly get to flight speed without filling the meter. this only works because the cape uses your actual speed rather than the meter itself.

@57:00 regarding a potential expanded ROM: I think that the ultimate test would be TASes: if TASes made for regular SMB3 sync when played on the expanded ROM, and TASes made for the expanded ROM sync when played back on stock SMB3, the expanded ROM should be allowed. Bonus points if the verification is done on TASBot. My reasoning being that a TAS (particularly a well optimized one) is extremely sensitive to changes in the ROM -- to the point that very minute changes in behavior can cause it to not sync.
@aurastrike2 жыл бұрын
The sensitivity is even worse than what's mentioned here - a TAS will not sync properly if even the most minor of changes to the ROM happens - everything must be in sync at all times or else the TAS will desync somewhere throughout the run This makes the expanded rom idea probably not worth it.
@flamewingsonic2 жыл бұрын
@@aurastrike You can actually made somewhat drastic changes to a ROM if you ensure that the new code runs the exact number of cycles of the same kinds as the old code does. I did that once when helping a guy getting a Sonic 3 & Knuckles TAS to sync as a demo on real hardware. This was a two-step process: step one is making a modified ROM that included a copy of the movie as a demo, and played this demo instead of reading joypad inputs. This had to be done using the same amount of 68k read/write cycles with the same timings as the joypad reading code did, as well as the same number of accesses to I/O area at the same times. This was annoying, but relatively straightforward. Step two was making another version of the modified ROM that displayed debug information on-screen to know what needed to be modified in the recorded movie to get it to sync -- Genesis emulation timing is nowhere near as good as that of NES/SNES, so the run desynched because of that. This required matching the same number of 68k read/write cycles with the same timings, as well as making sure all DMAs for displayed data had the amount of data and was transferred at the same times. This one was painful. In the end, the modified movie synched in both versions of the ROM, and the care taking in the input code meant it would also sync with stock S3&K on a Genesis TASBot. All said, it is not easy, but it is doable. But overall, yeah, I agree that even the most minute ROM change will cause a well optimized TAS to desynch eventually, unless the person doing it *really* knows both TASing and the system in question to an unhealthy degree.

Personally the All Stars version of SMB3 is my least favorite version for a few minor reasons, such as Mario not wearing gloves, the levels having a bit more loading/startup time, the physics feel sluggish, the music has too much reverb and sounds "tinny", the card matching minigame has some typos/spelling errors that are not found in the NES or GBA versions, whenever I start a level as Tanooki Mario and hold the run button before the level starts he automatically does the tail attack before running which kind of annoys me a little (same thing applies to Fire Mario and Hammer Mario, and this doesn't happen in the NES or GBA versions), Peach's sprite in this version looks ugly, the clouds at the top of the levels look a bit jarring and distracting, especially since the clouds move whenever you move (these issues were fixed in the GBA version), the underwater levels look too dark, and I'm not a fan of how Goomba's Shoe is called Kuribo's Shoe in the All Stars version. I know these are very small nitpicks and are probably not worth complaining about that much, but they just bother me enough for the All Stars version to be my least favorite version of SMB3, but despite all those nitpicks I still think the All Stars version of SMB3 is a decent version of the game, just not as good as the NES and GBA versions imo.
@MisterAutist Жыл бұрын
@@Masked_Mastermind The major deal breaker (at least for me) for being the superior version is the fact that the screen doesn't show what's below enough when you're in the air. Mitch did you realize that the off screen wand grab does not make any sense for speedrunners in the snes version? I wish you mentioned that,also there’re many other changes as well despite the snes version uses the same game engine from the nes version,but nintendo just added some changes to it,ALLTROUGH despite the snes can view twice the amount of sprites on screen then the nes,nintendo just didn’t bother to change the sprite priority system of it also the graphics are actually the same but with effect added to it along with added backgrounds to it, Also despite the snes can generate more audio channels,but again nintendo just didn’t bother to change it’s sound priority of it, i got the illusion as if nintendo just simply mapped those psg and dpcm sounds from the nes version to the snes’s sample pack kit (trough midi/toolchain) and call it a day, Well what do i got to say about this port, i got fond memory’s of it,but it feels no longer original.

I don't think the blazing speed in this has anything to do with using two controllers; I think it's just pressing left+right at the same time. Obviously, that wouldn't be allowed in RTA runs because it requires a modded controller. I don't have any idea about the TMNT 2 run, but I know there are a bunch of Zelda II TASes that do the same thing, and they're insane to watch - probably even more broken than this run is, because they throw in the healer glitch on top of the already broken movement. In fact, I don't think Link fights a single enemy besides Dark Link in the entire run. Also, I'm kinda surprised to see how many people disliked the graphics of this version. I grew up with both versions of this game (obviously, I played the NES version first), and I always preferred the look of this one. Anyway, yes, more TAS reactions, please. I've seen this TAS several times before, and it never ceases to amaze me. Seeing the world's best SMB3 runner just as amazed by it as I always am was quite a treat - and, of course, I learned several things from your commentary.

For myself, a lot of the aesthetic preferences come down to simplicity and abstraction vs detail and realism. What I love about SMB3 (the original) is that there is nothing there to distract you from the gameplay: almost everything that is there is there for a reason. The colour palettes are simple by necessity but I think they are well-chosen and a huge step up from SMB1. The "storybook" conceit of SMB3 helps with this too, you are looking at a minimalist world that is slightly abstract, like colourful blocky toys that a toddler might be fascinated by. Watching this I am reminded of my nostalgia for All-Stars though, so I think I can appreciate its style a little better. On the visual end, it's not quite as "busy" as I originally thought. I think in terms of audio and music, I definitely prefer the NES simply because I am more of a synthesizer lover than a low-bitrate sound sample lover. If that makes sense. :)

That starman music glitch is in the original NES Super Mario Brothers and you can do it on 1-1. Let the starman get as far right as you can and run to the flagpole. After the starman music normally runs out (just like here) it ends the fanfare and plays regular music.

@@Mitchflowerpower mitch i would highly recommand you to check out the SMB3 hack ‘luiigi vs mario’ because that game does have much improved graphics over the og SMB3, and there are even moving clouds on the airships,HOWEVER thr levels are different and it’s yet incomplete,there are for instance crashing bugs here and there BUT it proves the potential of it,aalso the graphics are still far from being snes quality BUT they are closer to it,BUT it is actually possible to do multiple scrolling backgrounds on the nes via advanced animated tile updates but that will take an insane amount of memory space because you have to account for every possible combination of each tile set so it is not easy to accomplish such thing, it also will require more expanded video ram to do such thing.

I have a couple of issues with SMAS, aside from the timing differences between it and the NES games. I've heard people say "it's exactly the same" but speedrunners say it's not, and I've always felt it's very not (despite absolutely not being in a speedrunner's league…) My issues are 1) Background-only objects don't look backgroundy enough-less saturation, more contrast with foreground pls!, and 2) SMB3 World 8 in particular. I really want less color. SMB3 on NES used a lot of black and white where it could've used other colors, and it didn't. On the SNES they made it more colorful because they could. In 8-tanks, the background's okay, keep that. But the ground … Not so cheery! And the desert… Why is that brown sand? Make it gray sand! DDevs will tell you the SNES shows its heritage with the NES. In fact, the SNES's 65C816 is literally a faster clocked 65C02 with some extra instructions you don't have to use and the ability to add/subtract 16 bit numbers if you want to do that. Could they make frame-perfect ports of the original Mario games with better graphics and more NESy-sounding-sound? Absolutely! You might not have some lag frames you'd get on the NES, actually. It wasn't worth Nintendo's time, though, and … they kind of wanted to show off the new features of the new console a bit, so many of the changes were on purpose.
