Mario Bava is an artist. Film is his canvas, and he decorated them with such delights and charms and colour visions. Love this film. One of my favorites by Bava. I remember being entranced by the atmosphere of rich decadence and Bava's luxuriating in stylistic excess when I first watched it--Lee's hand coming toward the camera at one point and alternating green and red light filters as his face comes toward the camera for a deep kiss. And I love the progressively tighter closeups of Lavi's face as she's walking down a hallway toward a door with a look of terror on her face and how her face is bathed in deep blue as she gets up from her bed and leans against a bedpost later on. Also, the part where she's playing the piano and the camera moves toward the rich fabric of the curtains before the windows with a storm raging outside and then back to her face and then back to the window with Lee peering in angrily. Bava really knew how to lay on the Gothic effects. Everything looks so well-composed and painterly. Of course, some dismiss him for his sacrificing of story to effects but as Pauline Kael said of Orson Welles' Touch of Evil, he makes more of those effects than the solemn meat and potatoes of storyline other directors dwell on. And who else but Bava with his wicked sense of humor would have made a film in which romantic love is transformed into sadomasochism? He was truly ahead of his time. Even today it would be kind of shocking. This print looks like it's taken from the recent Blu-Ray edition which is noted for its darkness--everything looks tinged with violet or deep blue, which works for the morbid tone of the piece. There's a European version from Germany which isn't so dark.
@themysteriousdomainmoviepalace Жыл бұрын
I'm so glad you see the poetry of Bava's work. And I love Orson Welles for the same reasons, especially his version of Othello which I will show here at some point. If I can...

@@themysteriousdomainmoviepalace Yes, that's beautiful. Welles was very inventive with the camera. But his Othello has a lot of dubbing and muffled sound issues if I remember correctly because of the scattershot way in which it was shot--some scenes here, then Welles going off to work on another film to raise money, then shooting a few more scenes. It's amazing it got made at all under those conditions.

Listening to your introduction to this movie, I was reminded of a role Christopher Lee played in BBC miniseries that came out in the year 2000, based on the first two books of Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast trilogy. The series was simply called Gormenghast. And Christopher Lee played Mr. Flay brilliantly. I will add that as a lover of the books it was based on, I also very much enjoyed the series, and was glad that they did not try to do the third book, as I don't think film or television could have done justice to that book. In any case, for "completists" of Christopher Lee material, it is well worth finding and watching.

I finally saw it about 25 years later when I bought it-sight unseen-on vhs from Sinister Cinema. This and "Black Sunday" are Bava's two best horror films. This one also appears to have been influenced by Roger Corman's Edgar Allan Poe flicks. In particular, the exhumation scene demonstrates this. This upload is a beauty ! Thanks !

I found the castle interior more scary than the storyline, why would anyone build a colossal dump like that? You'd never be able to heat it unless you cut down a whole forest and had an army of servants to keep the blazes toked up and most of the heat goes up the chimney not the living quarters. I think you'd literally freeze to death in there even in summer. Not even bear skins would keep the cold off you. (Blue with the cold.)

At least 20 years ago I saw this for the first time, and on disc. I think had the choice of 3 audios - and as I was about halfway through with the dubbed one, I switched about and the sound of the original was OH-so magnificent compared to the dubbed one --- the ambient sounds are taken out for the full-english version, along with the effect sounds. Amazing - I started it over from the beginning and watched with subtitles. [Edit] - though, it 'is' sweet to think the dubbed version has someone clicking coconut shells together to give us those running steps on stone in the house, whenever the women scamper away! HA!!

In your introduction to this film, did you describe the young Christopher Lee as "smoldering?" 🔥 "Let's light a lantern - I want a look in the moats" - I'm starting to love these Gothic Tales of Horror 🖤
