Agreed about homebrews! It's incredible what people are able to do these days with the old machines, and having carts made with manuals and even boxes of such high quality is a testament to the passion people still have for programming these classic consoles/computers! Great video!

Yup. Homebrew is pretty awesome. Constantly amazed by the videos people post up of the various homebrew games they come across and collect.

I feel the same way about hombrew developers. They are amazing people ! And I hope they continue to make games for years to come for the colecovision.

Totally agree with you there. These people do amazing stuff! I can't say enough about them! From what I hear there are many more new games that are to be released this year.

Nice review, great gameplay, and sweet homebrew! Will be including a recommendation, and a link to your video on my channel's review video Sunday.

This game has so many nice touches like the demonstration of how to play the game which are missing in the NES and 7800 versions. They spared no expense with this one being a 128k game.

That's a nice review and nice words for homebrewers. I read all the comments here and in the name of those who makes new games for vintage game systems, thank you. My wish to see more Coleco programmers was granted a couple of time... did you know that about 10 new games for the ColecoVision was released during the year 2010? I've got 3 of them : Pooyan, Girl's Garden and Kobashi.

Now THIS is a perfect example of the Colecovision's "arcade quality" games.
@markvergeer14 жыл бұрын
I kinda cheat with my Colecovision gameplay as I use a Y adapter that allows me to connect any controller (Genesis, C64 Suzo arcade stick or other 9 pint connector joystick) to the Coleco at the same time as the original colecovision controller. So I use the numeric pad to select player and game-mode and use the other controllers to have more precise control. My Colecovision controllers are not in the best condition any more so that's why I resort to things like that.

This is as good as it gets! If I had only been born a few years earlier, I'm sure I would have had a Colecovision.

Nice review man :) Yes, its awesome of game programmers to go to great lengths to make the actual cartridge itself, the manual and the box. I know a buddy on here by the KZbin name NEWCOLECO, and he makes wonderful youtube vids. He is a game programmer and his one homebrew that he made which is called "Ghostblaster" looks really awesome! He actually sold a few. I would have bought one but dont have a coleco at the moment. But this mario game looks great on the coleco!

Amazing, to say the least. Oh how I would've loved to have played this back when I had my ColecoVision.

And the reason why was probably due to Coleco's alleged infringing on Atari release rights over Donkey Kong on their Adam computer (the official port was released 7/84) at the 6/83 CES show. Coleco had the "console" rights whereas Atari had the "computer" rights. At the same time Atari had also planned a deal with Nintendo to release the FamiCom in the U.S., but even that petered out and Atari's CEO was shown the door shortly after their brush with Coleco.

I LOVE the Colecovision but I don't understand why they always had issues with putting WHITE in the characters eyes.... like the original arcade versions...

+ThePbrook1967 Your question is a valid one. The ColecoVision vs Atari 5200 is an interesting one. But in keeping it short to answer your question; The Atari 5200 sprites are multicolored 3 color sprites but can only show up to 4 sprites per scan line. The ColecoVision sprites are only single color sprites but can show up to 8 sprites per scan line. In order to show multicolored objects the ColecoVision uses multiple sprites to achieve this, Mario in this game uses 3 sprites thats why he is red and blue with peach skin. But since he is using 3 sprites that only leave 5 more sprites to be shown per scan line before you start having the flicker affect. That's why the rest of the characters in the game, the crab, turtles, flame, flies, and coins are single colored. The flies and coins at times look like they have more color but that's a side effect or artifact of the graphics chip that the ColecoVision uses. Thats why at most times you don't see the 'White's' of the eyes is because the programmer is not going to use another sprite just for that, thus creating more flicker affect for the rest of the game. Both systems have their trade offs, strengths and weaknesses. But the ColecoVision seems to overall pull off the Arcade experience better.

This game is for the standard CV. The 5200/400/800/XL/XE can display 5 single-bit/color (+ bg) sprites (players) per scanline, but they can combine any 2 sprites to create 2-bit sprites for 3 colors (+ bg, as 2 bits provide for 4 choices). The CV, like the INTV, cannot combine sprites, but merely overlay them, so it takes 3 sprites for 3 colors, rather than 2. Also, the CV can only display 4 sprites at a time per scanline, not 8. And it has a maximum of 32, whereas the Atari systems can reuse the sprites on every single scanline, if desired.

This is a good version, but the one thing I kind of don't like about this version. It feels like the NES version rather than the Arcade version. Good review though. When I am older, I want to make home brew ports on many old consoles like the ColecoVision and Vectrex. ;)
