@@Drewp06 That is where I disagree. A lot of metal is very technically challenging maybe even harder than some Gojira songs, sure. But my point is that Mario has just a way better feel behind the kit than pretty much any other big metal drummer. He understands the instrument way better and has made his playing sound and feel so much more alive than the rest.

being schooled as a jazz drummer probably helps a lot, look at guys like martin lopez and sean reinert: all metal drummers with beautiful taste, feel and creativity

@@SoonAfterOfficial Not necessarily! But I do think that having a jazz background really defines a metal drummer's perspective on making music. Jazz to me is inherently more focused on tasteful playing, subtlety and expressiveness than most genres. Besides, jazz and metal just sound so good meshed together I think (think of Carey, Samuelson, Roddy, Christy, Harrison, Garstka etc.) TL;DR we both love Mario and wish we could play like him.

Saw Gojira live in Melbourne recently. Besides his unreal technique and groove, what struck me is how much effort and energy Mario puts into his playing. It's incredible that a dude so talented is so humble too.

I think most likely he'll be one of the most underrated of all time. He's great, he's much more musically inclined than most metal drummers who typically go for machine gun speed (which is totally fine) I think him and Gojira as a whole will remain glorious but never quite so famous and well known as their talent really demands.

They have! They’ve used the original “Babar” Live up until 2009 before it was lost on a street somewhere, never to be seen again! This tall metal structure is a recreation of the original “Babar”.

Good on you girl! I didn't get behind a kit until I was 32 and got into drumming more seriously, taking lessons, at 35. I absolutely adore drumming! There's never a right or wrong age to do something you're passionate about. Mario is one of my all time favorite drummers because of the energy, spirit and discipline he puts into it, and definitely an inspiration for me picking up sticks.

Fun fact, that metal bar he is playing during the solo, was used for the recording of "The Art Of Dying". He's one of the few drummers actually that innovate with style and new ideas about the drumming. Mario besto drummer.

I saw him play a solo during the Mega Monsters tour and I felt like I was witnessing something intimate and deeply personal. His expressions, the energy, what he put into his instrument. Some people like to play the drums, but Mario LOVES it.

What I like most about Mario's style is it's not overly technical (which sometimes becomes boring and unlistenable), but still incredibly creative and refreshing. Definitely on the top 10 of modern metal drummers.

Fantastic. I also love that he is pragmatic about what to practice on, using electronics and a double pedal instead of two bass drums. I always wondered why he uses two bass drums when this is an options - must simply be that it looks cooler in videos and when playing live! For what it's worth, Mario Duplantier is fast moving up my list of favourite drummers.

I love it! Electronic it kit that could probably create the sound of that HVAC Vent duct (or whatever that piece of metal is) but he just uses that instead. Adds so much to this not only visually but audio wise... SUPERB! I'm a fan!

Story goes his mom noticed him drumming on everything... and asked him if he wanted lessons. At age eleven. Moms always notice this sort of thing... also, brother Joe noticed Mario was a better drummer than the guy in his band... which is why videos of early Gojira live shows you can only see the top of Mario's head and a huge pair of sneakers (he was still a teen, still growing, and has big feet).

This one definitely "hits different" genius. Mario and Benny Greb have very particular styles. Very very creative. Everyone please notice the way he uses the time/space between beats and the way he fires that *6 stroke roll?* Off that floor tom. The change in swing really makes this.
