Mario, is a puppet character in the way Relius is a puppet character: Just command and forget. No real negative edge shenanigans to worry about. He feels he can definitely control space and oki, but he does have a lack of reversal options... so very much like other characters of his archetype. Big thing I do notice is his nuns will interrupt the opponent even when they land hits against Mario, which is hilarious or infuriating depending on whether or not you are playing as or against him.

imo playing Mario like a standard melty character is underwhelming. His buttons are stubby and frame data doesn't do him any favors . His movement is average at best. He has some strengths that are pretty non-standard though. 236A is pretty nice to bully people on the ground, and also catches people jumping and landing. It's air unblockable, and it's really easy to catch people in the air with it if they aren't landing on top of you. j.214A and j.214[A] is really nice as well. Best way to think of it is, regardless of where Mario is in the air he can threaten the entire ground with a hitbox. It gives him a lot of flexibility. Airdash-back >j.214[A] allows him to retreat and put pressure. j.214[A] will give a full combo too. 2BC is a pretty cheap reversal. In moon drive it's frame 1, but still good outside. imagine shield except it catches high/low/mid, has no rps, and still gives a full combo on hit. It's still super active and fairly low recovery. Hard to punish, and easy to use. Like you mentioned 623X and his oki are pretty great too.

Bought melty last week played Mario frame 1, loved him immediately, doesn't feel as weird as I thought he would be to play. (Zato flashbacks) Very fun Ps:zato is fun too it's just that I literally cannot do some of his cool combos on default gamepad layout.

Honestly I think it’s not terrible his moon skills are mediocre because you get to counter moon drive people that don’t want to block. Of course it would be nice to have stupid armored moves but since his oki is his main thing I think it fits him well.

he has to manage the recovery of the nuns separate from himself though. as he cant chain actions they have to either leave the screen or have a set of wires appear arpund them in a circle that indicates when they cam be controled again.

NRS games have the best characters (at least personally I think so), best visuals, biggest budget, are the most successful, bring the most attention to the fgc, feel like the most complete when it comes to single player content, have the best gameplay middle ground between braindead anime games and 4d chess classic fighters.. And still western gamers keep bashing it just because it wasn't made by someone who doesn't speak English. Fun factor should justify their existence. Only tekken even comes to being as fun as mortal kombat.

@@themanwhosoldtheworld3284 I think he was being sarcastic in his reply. Anyway, I myself personally enjoy netherrealm games, though I can see why they're often dismissed by the fgc. Slower movement, elements of randomness like stage interactions, a weird push on microtransactions (especially with MK11), etc. That being said, there's still a lot to like about the games. In terms of singleplayer content, for example, MK goes pretty much unrivaled. I think it's ultimately just a matter of preference for most people.
