I have always thought that this piece was the game's way to bid farewell to the player. It's a slow tune. Calming, relaxing for the road its in. N64's Rainbow Road is among the safest iterations of Rainbow Road to the point that players can only fall off if they actively go for it. It's the final track of the game, too. After all you've done, it's fitting that the game bids you farewell with such a calming song. "You've done superbly... But it's time we part ways. So... Just one more time... For old time's sake." Conversely, MK8's N64 Rainbow Road is more of a "Welcome back!" Piece given how upbeat it is. "After all these years you still have it in you to visit this old road in the sky. Let's have fun again just like we used to!"
