Mario Kart 64 Tournament - VA 2018 Finals

This is the finals of the Virginia 2018 MK64 4P VS tournament. More details below.
Rules/Info:
19 people were entered in this tournament with the top 7 returning players from last year's tournament getting a bye into the top 16. The remaining 12 players each played 1 round of all 16 tracks to try to earn one of the remaining 9 spots.
In the play-ins, each player plays 1 round of 16 races each with their opponents based on predetermined seeding. For each race, 3 points are awarded for 1st, 2 for 2nd and 1 for 3rd. The players with the most overall points in their round compared to all others in the play-ins moved on to the top 16.
In the top 16, each player played in 2 full rounds that were determined by seeding for a total of 32 races. The top 8 players in total points after all rounds moved on to the top 8.
In the semi-finals/top 8, there were 2 groups of 4 players. The top 2 from each group moved on to the finals.
Cups were played in Mushroom, Special, Star, Flower order. Tracks were played with standard non-shortcut rules.
Tiebreakers were done at the end of the play-ins to determine more seeding for the next rounds (in 4 player mode with 2 idle characters).
A ROM hack by bitalive was used for allowing same character selection and stats along with other scoring features: github.com/abi...

I heart MK64. If instead of making a new MK game, I would be completely content with Nintendo remastering MK64 by locking down the frame rate to at least 30 fps, as the original version drops to sub 20 at times, and maybe...MAYBE...add a couple more battle mode maps. This game has some of the all-time greatest tracks. I think the first track I ever saw was at a Walmart...it was the 4th track in the Mushroom Cup, Kalimari Desert. It had a train and everything! It also has the only snow/ice track I've ever liked, and it's one of my favorite tracks; Sherbet Land. Frappe Snowland isn't bad, either, for a snow track. And Rainbow Road...I mean, come on. The first time I saw that? Forget about it. It was amazing. The scope of the track was ridiculous. It wasn't as dangerous as RR in SMK, but it was much more epic. Goddamn, what a great game. I wish I had a local place that had annual MK64, Goldeneye and Super Smash Bros. tournaments. The N64 and Dreamcast were the last of the Golden Era of video games for me. That was when I was at the peak of my video game prime.

At 10:50, Wario after getting bolted purposely falls behind to manipulate his item choice to get 3X red shells. That is skill and a high play move on the last lap.

At the risk of sounding ignorant, is there are special cartridge for "tournament mode?" Those settings in yellow and two players selecting Yoshi are things I am not familiar with, though I don't often speed run.

Since this is a rom hack would it basically be the same as playing on a PAL AUS/NZ version? The frame rate lag occurs noticably only on dks jungle parkway but that's only when i play 2 player with my mate, playing 3 or 4 makes other courses have frame rate lag. However, I do zoom out to stop it happening so it's usually alright. I don't have 3 friends to play with haha.

@@abney317mk Oh yeah sorry dude i get them mixed up because I never knew anything about the differences until recently and had to spend a few hours setting up my gv usb 2 and recording equipment specifically for my region of PAL with 25fps (on 30 games) and i think it runs at 50 or 55 on 60 fps games (like f zero x)

Why does Special Cup come after Mushroom?

Because they can play Rainbow Road and Wario Stadium back to back this way. That way, if someone performed bad up to that point he can pull himself together over those two long races. Also, the Flower Cup makes for a more intense finale, since Rainbow Road is kind of boring and not really challenging as a last race.

I may be wrong so pls forgive me if I offend anyone. I played both SMK and MK64 and found that winning on SMK highly depended on skills while winning on MK64 highly depended on luck, in particular weapons. If I recall, I was very disappointed with the Kart dynamics on N64. I played both a lot but there may be something I missed out on N64.

Mk64 was extremely fun to play because of that with friends. The bots were so difficult we almost always ended up throwing a controller out the window. The rubber band stuff was crazy especially when we didn’t know any short cuts or the mini boosters

poor guy that was yoshi at the first race, its how i feel on lap 3/3 on hard. you cant move for 2 seconds without getting hit. id play mario kart 64 over 8 deluxe of i could. mario kart 64 had more normal tracks. on 8 deluxe they have it in water, in space and going upside down like sonic, not my type of levels.

I never realized how much this game is based on luck... i mean no offense Beck but you got many stars being second placed and boos in first place, when for example the other players got a banana or green shell or the Wario player receiving 3 green shells being last. It seems that most of the time it is the last item that counts. Anyway, thanks a lot for these videos tournament, it was really fun to watch.

How do you explain the best players are always in finals?

Before you start a fight you will lose, i will explain it to you... they are all four good players, the thing is that when you are all almost the same level, it becomes a random game. If they are in finals, it is because the other players were not that good. You can tell it by the first group Beck played with, he got 40 points or something like that. You saw the races, players were really close at the end of almost every race, and on the only last one, we can guess the winner. This is why i say, most of the time it is just random.

Well.. poker is a lot about luck... next to that, you can try bluffing but you cannot guess what the other player has. Also, most of the time, you have a better hand until the turn and got screwed at the river lol.

Yes... maybe luck is important in terms of "power ups" but that doesn't mean u can win, because... skills are needed to drive fast in any situation, skills are needed to drive through a hard course, skills are needed to watch your opponents and get ready to counter attack, skills are needed to use wisely the "power ups", besides... this "power ups" has a actual algorithm, some will appears if u are in the first places, the middle and last, the rest is random... so, this game "based in luck" it is not... Beck is one of the best drivers in MK64, another titan is Matthias..

there is some skill to it, but also a luck factor. GTsport for example is pure skill, but a bit boring and predictable.

There's some strategy to it as well. They use the items with a higher skill than your average MK64 player. Waiting for the right moment instead of just shooting from the hip everytime like we used to. Sometimes you can even see them brake and stay behind if a player has some red shells or similar. These dudes are hardcore.
