Mario Kart 64 Tournament - VA 2019 Finals

These are the finals of the Virginia 2019 MK64 4P VS tournament. All matchup and tournament info is listed below.
Rules/Info:
24 people were entered in this tournament with the top 4 returning players from last year's tournament getting a bye into the top 16. The remaining 20 players each played 2 rounds of all 16 tracks to try to earn one of the remaining 12 spots.
In the play-ins, each player plays 2 rounds of 16 races each with their opponents based on predetermined seeding. For each race, 3 points are awarded for 1st, 2 for 2nd and 1 for 3rd. The players with the most overall points in their rounds compared to all others in the play-ins moved on to the top 16.
In the top 16, each player played in 2 full rounds that were determined by seeding for a total of 32 races. The top 8 players in total points after all rounds moved on to the top 8.
In the semi-finals/top 8, there were 2 groups of 4 players. The top 2 from each group moved on to the finals.
Cups were played in Mushroom, Special, Star, Flower order. Tracks were played with standard non-shortcut rules.
A ROM hack by bitalive was used for allowing same character selection and stats along with other scoring features: github.com/abi...

I just discovered these a week or so ago and watched all the tournaments. I love this. The comradery, inside jokes/phrases, competitiveness, and the commentary are what make these so special. I wouldn’t change a thing, can’t wait to see more. Edit: are there any highlight videos from each year? All the big plays and hilarious moments would be fun to rewatch.

should have used the lightning bolt to take down zoran on wario stadiun .he was very advantageous in scoring, I think beck abney was harmed.

I never knew they do tournaments in this game. This is one of the few games I'll take people on any time, would love to find tournaments and practice again. Would love to rep a heavy weight. Are there rules that disable lame stuff from happening? I assume no map glitches and wall jumping obviously. But what about holding onto a lightning bolt the entire game in Wario stadium and hitting it on the last jump on the final lap? That used to be like auto loss unless you get a ghost or star to counter it.

Only player 2 went the right way in yoshi Valley! Back in the 90s Nintendo Power magazine analyzed that map and explained the pros and cons of each route and which path done flawlessly was the fastest and shortest. Player 2 took the perfect route like he knew it. It has hands down the most risk because if any of the moving moles hit you its likely you will slide off the edge. Looks like he flawlessly took it lap 1 and played the lead safe and didnt take it again.

Everyone in this match knows which is the fastest route to to take in Yoshi Valley. The path most commonly taken in these matches (and not the fastest path) is most commonly taken for a reason: it's only slightly slower than the fastest path, there are far fewer "spinies" to contend with and you get 2 additional sets of item boxes to collect.

@@dntn31 well watching more not only are there more spinies, but as I mentioned (maybe I did on a different video and forgot) the spinies you do deal with have a massive chance to send you off the edge if you don't narrowly avoid it. So even then it's far worse than risking a casual spin out I suppose =[

The item boxes are a big deal as dntn mentioned. I would have gone that path on lap 1 had I gotten a better item from the first box. It's really hard to know what the spiny cycle will be like on any lap other than lap 1 because there's no timer in VS mode.

Stock console. Played in that order because ending with a 5 minute track isn’t too fun for people when they’re already out of it

​@@abney317mk oh I see, would overclocking the console actually help increase the framerate? I know OC-ed consoles reduces lag for other games like Smash but haven't actually seen any footage of an overclocked N64 with MK64

It would, yes. Many prefer to play with the original hardware though as the game has built in adjustments on laggier tracks to compensate

wtf is going at the end of lap 3 on yoshi valley? a red comes out of nowhere and launches Jones off the bridge then another one takes out Beck's blocker before the finish line.

Was wondering the same and had to rewatch. Looks like Zoran fired the one that hit Beck's blocker near the end. Also there seem to be 2 reds that are just navigating the track, one of which got Jones. I think maybe they are the ones fired by Zoran at the start of lap 2.

Okay so some people wanted my picks for the finals, well here it goes. I picked Dan to win because the other 3 already won a VA championship already. (Jones: 2014, 2015) (Zoran: 2016) (Abney317: 2018) Also I knew Jones was not winning at all because how can you win the finals if you're not in the top 4 on the Non-SC list. I mean Dan, Abney, and Zoran are #2, #3, and #4 in that order.

Missing an item box on the first two laps isn't that bad. However missing a item box on the final lap may be the difference between winning and losing the race. Specially when your opponents get good items and you got nothing to defend against them.

Someone's cell phone was going off in the room. You can hear that I call for a pause before the race even starts. The commentators are in a different room so they didn't hear the disruption. None of the other competitors objected to the restart.

I don't think this is accurate at all. They actually showed above average skill and the strats I saw on certain tracks were quite hard to pull off yet they managed to do them, this actually some top level play but there is room for improvement, even thought I saw stuff I never saw before in a tournament, I actually noticed some flaws like stalling the lighting bolt on a crucial point to win the most advantage, more than once they got their lighting stolen and got worse results than if they'd just use the lighting just before reaching another item box

@@leodexe yeah I spoke to soon and I apologize about the noob comments. At the time I just assumed these were random guys playing Mario Kart and uploading them. The videos are entertaining and full of great play. Some play is questionable but that comes with the stress of competitive play. Cheers
