My best memory with this game was going to a friend's house while he had a large section of his family from China visiting. Most of them didn't speak any English we could understand but at one point one of our friends in our group took out his DS and started up Mario Kart and suddenly at least 5 or 6 of the Chinese relatives also whipped out DS units and we suddenly had a full multiplayer race going. Mario Kart DS is the true universal language.

5:36 Actually I beg to differ. As someone who probably has close to 400 hours in this game, the blooper makes a very noticeable difference against the CPU. As you can also see in the footage, the computer starts to swerve whenever they are hit by the blooper. Because of their constant swerving, their overall speed actually goes down drastically, since they are no longer going in a straight line. The moral of the story is that bloopers are actually more effective against the CPU than they are against real players thank you for coming to my TED talk

@@thirteen3678 I meant original tracks, so yeah. Honestly a lot of 8’s retro courses are better than its unique ones. Bone Dry Desert, Shy Guy Mountain, Sweet Sweet Canyon feels like a Mario Circuit that had candy theming at the last second. Where’s the crazy stuff like maybe cherry bombs or cake candles shooting fire? Water Park is another example of barely doing anything with the theming. There’s one short section where you can use a mushroom to shortcut between park rides and maybe bump a Ferris wheel cart before the finish line. Compare that to Tick Tock Clock where there’s clock hands, gears, pendulums, all things you actually have to avoid or interact with pretty regularly on the track. Then there’s the Electrodome, and to its credit, it’s great as a standard twisty, turny track, but aside to the changes to the presentation, where’s the excitement? Have parts of the track become electrified, a disco ball whose spotlights cause a boost if you drive over them. Also Sky High Sundae. I think nothing else needs to be said on that one

It's probably been said already, but the reason why R.O.B. is in this game is because the year this game came out. 2005 was R.O.B.'s 15th anniversary! On another note, this might be the only DS game where the intro is different depending on what DS model you're using. If you're using the original DS, the intro has Mario shouting "Wahoo!" while the DS Lite and beyond would have him say "Here we go!"

This was my first Mario Kart game. It was my introduction to characters like Waluigi and R.O.B., and I remember spending months beating all the missions to get 100% and gain the ability to use any character with any kart. I also remember playing a ton of battle mode with my friends, especially Shine Runners, which is still my favourite battle mode in any Mario Kart game. I'm also still disappointed we have yet to see a return of mission mode, or at least some kind of singleplayer mode with boss battles and whatever.

IIRC, people sell dslites that have the top completely taken off, and the long cylinder in the part where the top screen and bottom screen connects is replaced with a decorative light. I might just be remembering it wrong, though.

the balloon battle in the ds version is way better than any of the other balloon battles just because its more of an elimination thing. The no time limit and only two men left standing situations used to be super tense especially when playing with friends

This is one of my favorites. I remember Evan and I playing this on the bus on local multiplayer and then in lunch the other 6 boys with no social lives and the 8 of us would just play mariokart no lunch it was mariokart. We did it all, grand prix vs sprites but oh man ballon battles were the big thing. They laughed at us, called us names, told us to grow up and we didn't give one fuck because mariokart was fucking amazing. Ive put probably 500 hours into the game and i know it so well. When he was talking about snanking i laughed cuz i discovered that stat without internet and i would always cream anyone on figure 8. Its probably just nostalgia but when MK7 came out I wasnt interested. I got MK8 and it was fun but it wasn't the same. DS is truly the quintessential MK. The older ones aren't as fun bc of technical reasons. The newer ones feel too wacky and abstract. This one had it right in the middle and it was perfect. Something about 2000s nintendo that was so amazing. Thanks scott for a trip down memory lane.

The game is totally nostalgic for me! When I was in the 7th Grade, my friends, classmates, and I used to bring our DS' and we would play Mario Kart DS every recess. I remember being the top player at that time, but it's because I'd practice doing those constant snake drifts! I did ended up breaking my DS Lite's D-Pad because of that, but I thought it was worth it! I did however get the 3-Star Rank on my game's profile. I would show off the 3-Stars on my Player icon along w/ my custom MegaMan.EXE emblem. My friends were really impressed too! Ah, good times...
