We can find all type of opinions about his voice, but by far there is one share by many of them: Mario had one of the best tenor voice ever. Thanks to God to be able to enjoy it nowdays.

Trovo che Mario Lanza abbia una voce limpidissima ed anche armoniosa , vibrante e che regala emozioni che arrivano al cuore ed all'anima stessa di chi ascolta!!! Una voce inimitabile e forse, irraggiungibile!!! (Mi ero innamorata della sua voce a....7 anni e facevo capricci pestando i piedi per andare a vedere i suoi film nei lontani anni del dopoguerra (1947/1948/1949 avevo circa 8 anni!!! Era stato il mio primo innamoramento! Poi, per il resto della mia giovinezza mi ero dedicata allo studio e all'Atletica Leggera.... al Salto in lungo, in alto, alla staffetta, al Pentatlon e.... a niente altro....forse aspettavo un redivivo Mario Lanza!!!!

The film is from 1949, when Mario's voice still was a lyric one. By the middle 50's, his voice matured to a spinto one and there is a studio recording of this aria (RCA, I think), which is really amazing. Thank you for the post. It's a pity that one does not such films anymore.

Le immagini ci rimandano un giovane aitante e pieno di entusiasmo con una voce eccezionale che appariva agli occhi dei molteplici spettatori dei mitici musical americani della MGM. Il successo e la fama lo accompagnarono per molti anni ma poi tutto fini' con la sua prematura fine che gettò nello sconforto i suoi tanti ammiratori che ancora oggi continuano ad ascoltare la sua magnifica voce.

Almost all cinema musical sequences are pre-recorded and then there is a playback of this pre-recording on set and the performer lip-synchs (mimes) to this for the camera, it’s to achieve the best sound for the soundtrack, it would be very hard to mic, capture and balance these performances on set otherwise while filming.

Hollywood often screwed up classical voice in its films.. Specifically they tried to create a singing star with this aria Celeste Aida. But it wasn't Lanza. It was James Melton who they were grooming as a replacement for Dick Powell. Melton was tall, handsome and had an attractive personality. He also sang often at the Met. He was a legitimate opera singer. None of this crap that Lanza was not a "real" opera singer. It was good voice but not for Rhadames. He had a lighter voice. Melton was miles better as a vocalist than Powell ever was, but he had no business singing Celeste Aida. Too heavy. I did an Aida performance once where the tenor - who was excellent in Rigoletto - simply disappeared, rather than go on as Rhadames. It's the kind of part that scares tenors. Lanza is pretty good in this excerpt. At this point in his career Mario was very good in the aria. Later he would have been appropriate for the heavier parts like the Temple of Vulcan scene. Lanza I think of as a Verismo tenor not so much as a Verdi tenor. But make no mistake he had, even early as here, he had the talent and technique to sing almost anything. Big talent.

I don't know how to call it....he has something that differentiates him from all th eother tenors....How can I get that color of voice? What exercercises can i do to have his natural colour?? Non è falsetto, ma È il colore e potenza di voce che Mario Lanza riusciva a cantare solo fino al SIb. Ma lui decideva se togliere potenza o dargliene di più. Poi dal SI naturale in avanti, la voce diventava per forza molto potente. Il Do naturale in Be my love è magnifico.

No subtlety, no light and shade. He doesn't hit the notes, he slides up to them, and the final note, marked pianissimo, he sings full blast. A mess - the best you could say about Lanza is that he was loud.
