It is truly amazing that a singer who passed away so long ago still captures the imagination of millions. It is a testimony to Mario Lanza's fantastic talent. It was a splendid but short lived career filled with passion and success and some difficult times. At the end, Lanza was back on his way up and was among the most popular entertainers of his era. I recommend reading A KID FROM PHILADELPHIA, MARIO LANZA, THE VOICE OF THE POETS, and to listen to him as you read the beautiful essays that are a homage to a star who is still with us and will always be with us.

He had recorded all the music then refused to do the movie, so they had Edmund Purdon do it! A shame, I agree!

Tears came to my eyes when The Student Prince movie was on AMC the other night. I was in my late teens, and fell in love with the movie. So, I had to pull up the soundtrack and once again listen to this outstanding work by Sigmund Romberg. Awesome everytime I hear it

Edmund Purdom the greatest mime artist ever. Even the breath intake before every new phrase is pinpoint...Incredible.

Purdom does do a good job, I especially love his close-up work on I’ll Walk with God on the lines, “I’ll walk with God, I’ll take his hand, I’ll talk with God, he’ll understand. I’ll pray to him, each day to him and he’ll hear the words that I say....” Purdom said it was an amazing voice to act to, he had Mario playing back at full volume on the set!

A beautiful Film performed by two beautiful souls and a truly heart felt Musical with a song Summer time in Heidelberg which is my favorite song in the entire film! Very emotional and touching all the way. brought tears to my eyes as it did as a child when i would watch this film. Ann Blyth liked it too.

My mom and I love "The Student Prince" also. It is such a beautiful movie and the songs are just fantastic. I love Mario Lanza. He could sing powerfully and tenderly. And Ann Blythe had a lovely voice also. They compliment each other so well. I have watched this movie countless times, but I still can't help crying at the end. I love this song also, but my favorite is "Beloved". But all of the songs in this musical are just so lovely and beautiful.

Yes! My favorite from this film is also, "Beloved". Nobody could "deliver" emotion like Mario... and this song was composed for just that!

I agree. Mario Lanza could sing powerfully, like in an opera, yet tenderly like he sings these songs in this most beautiful love story. It's like he is crying when he sings "Beloved". I don't think the 3 tenors could ever come close to his singing. He puts the Great Caruso to shame. What a talent. So sad he was gone too young.

Ingenious having Anne Blyth's barely pleasant voice halt and Mario's cut in. It's like the world stops spinning and asks...What is this insanely beautiful sound?
@Raul612337 жыл бұрын
Mario Lanza, great, yes, but one cannot overlook the amazing lip sync work of Edmund Purdom, who for unknown reasons spent his career working in Europe (mostly Italy) instead of the U.S. Purdom was also memorable in The Egyptian.
@davidcraig99387 жыл бұрын
Being the faker/ plagiarizer that he was is what ended his sorry career. Who wants to see a faker use Judy Garland's voice--let alone, Mario Lanza's! The dummy who tries get's run out ...and so trying soooo hard to fool the audience, Purdom got his due. Better that he had made less effort!
@dawnjohnson32632 жыл бұрын
Well he was a Londoner. Yes indeed, The Egyptian. Another masterful role. Yes his lip-sync was extraordinarily fantastic

@@davidcraig9938 what is that dribble on the gutter that just fell out of your mouth? Edmund purdon was a superb British Shakespearean actor. The studio wanted a fine looking Prince like role and they chose the best, him. They already had the best voice. Purdon is well admired for the fine job he did lipsyncing and he was classic in the Student Prince and the Egyptian

Beautiful! Grayson does a great job of singing and seeming nervous and flustered and Purdom convinces us that that gorgeous tenor voice is his.
@ursmue19379 жыл бұрын
GizmetDora Lopez 1. This is not Grayson. 2. Purdom not convincing, as stiff as a stick, the film was a mega flop, not shown in Germany. Without M.Lanza not make money.
@GizmetDora9 жыл бұрын
ursmue1937 1. You are right,this is not Kathryn Grayson. This is Ann Blyth --- an error I should not have made since Grayson has a distinctive 'piccolo'-sounding voice. 2. Purdom's portrayal of the prince was purposely stiff, as the whole idea was to portray the prince as a 'Prussian Prick'. There is no denying the fact that Mario Lanza was a phenomenal singer!
@maryannlewin16218 жыл бұрын
I don't believe this movie was a flop. It is so beautiful and the songs melt my heart, as does the whole movie. I think Edmond Perdom acted very good as the stuffy prince who later learns to "loosen up", thanks to Cathy, beautifully portrayed by Ann Blythe. It's a very beautiful love story.

Right, the actor is Edmund Purdom. Mario Lanza had already recorded all the music for the film, and was fired, so Lanza's voice was used as Purdom certainly cannot sing like Lanza. .... and what great dubbing it was.
