(They're Pretty Tough! Should We Be Careful? makes for a way too long feckin' title, but it's the only true name for this theme in my heart)

A third M&L track in a row?! Yeah..
I'm still in a very Mario & Luigi-ish mood right now, but I think it's about time for something else. I've been itching to go back to the PC-Engine/TG-16 for a while, now. My FM itch has been thoroughly scratched, but has turned into an itch for wavetable synthesis (if it can truly be called "synthesis").
What'll I do? I dunno. Maybe I'll do the Sonic 1 Master System OST, but then I'll be obligated to do the Genesis version, too. We'll see.

I think this is the most advanced theme I've done so far, on a technical level. Trying to cram the spirit of the DS original into the Genesis's 11 channels wasn't the easiest thing in the world, though much tedium was alleviated thanks to Orj and their video here:

A very common practice of PCM-based soundtracks on channel-limited systems like the SNES, GBA, DS, etc. was to have complex samples that were tailor-made to the track they belong in. For example, instead of using one sample of a single instrument taking up multiple channels, composers will make a sample with multiple voices, such as a chord of that same instrument.
This is something Bowser's Inside Story does as well. Fortunately for me, though this track takes up 16 channels in the original, all 16 are never really used at once. Also, there are two tracks of a single instrument, only with different stereo properties.
Another big kicker is that the Genesis's third FM channel can be split into four operators. What that means is that it can be used for a polyphony of up to four voices (sines only). I use this a bit, particularly for strings sections.
(Also, it'd be really cool if the OPZ had done this, since it can actually provide carrier waveforms that aren't just the basic sine, but I'm just rambling at this point. :P)
Also, the whole software-driven Dual PCM and CSM things, but I've waxed paragraphically about those already... (Look at me, assuming you all know the nitty-gritty of the Genesis's sound chip, or that you've all read all of my previous (*extremely long*) descriptions, and in order, at that. How villainous! Zehahahahaha!)
I used the CSM for the synth bass.

I like this theme quite a bit, though I think by this point that many of you have realized that I only do tracks that I like (duh). Regardless, I'll say it anyways!
I have a lot nostalgia for this track in particular because I was so young when I played this game. That only compounds with the fact that since I was so young, I would often get stuck at bosses like an idiot of foolishness. Not to mention that Bowser's Inside Story was my very first RPG. (I didn't even know what that was, or that such a genre even existed!)
Oh, it was a simpler time, it was. Back when I assumed that all Mario games that weren't obviously spin-offs like Mario Kart/Party were platformers. Boy, what a dunderhead.
(But really, it's not like the simple cover conveys otherwise to someone who didn't know. Cut li'l' Gabagool some slack, bud! "Oh, just read the back of the case, stupid." The back? You mean the one that I can't see while it's behind the glass display at Walmart?! Besides, I got it used and without a box of my own at the GameStop in the mall, you presumptuous fink rat! IT WAS IN NOTHING BUT SOME BUBBLE WRAP IN A SQUARED BROWNISH-YELLOW ENVELOPE! WHY DON'T YOU GO READ THE BACK OF THE BOX, PAL?!)

Man, did I get whiplash (the good kind) when the opening ended and people were actually TALKING to each other! It was like nothing I'd ever seen of Mario! And then he and Luigi walk and jump around in EIGHT whole directions... *TOGETHER*?!!!
This game rocked my WORLD. What a great soundtrack, too!
But I've really gone on for far too long. :P
I haven't even said my thoughts on this version yet....
It's alright. I'm not as amazed by it as I am with my Superstar Saga - Come On! arrangement. Still satisfied, though.
