+Tonypikmin Um, no. GXP Meh'd both Amiibo Festival and Tennis Ultra Smash. Not to mention their discussion on Star Fox was lukewarm. They're not bias toward Nintendo in their reviews, they just aren't bought out the way IGN's hype machine is. IGN caters to what western publishers want you to be hyped about while generally scorning or outright ignore most alternatives, including Nintendo, nothing more nothing less. Also, if anything it can be argued that IGN has an anti-Nintendo bias on account of them docking points for really stupid reasons. Remember "7.8 too much water"? Yeah, IGN is not a credible source, least of all when the review is summed in just over half a minute.

The dialogue in this game is so quirky. I love it how the Bowsers argue, Peach has thoughts of chopping her hair off, and Koopalings are upset there aren't paper versions of themselves. It's all so cute. Can't wait to get this.

Wish that we could have a new character, or maybe a returning character from the RPG games, but this is disappointing. Example: Nabbit appears. Now this seems perfectly fine, but let's not forget the fact that the Mario and Luigi series has a lovable theif character named Popple. Wasted opportunity, especially considering he recently appeared in Dream Team. Another one is the fact that Bowser's servant is Kamek, while it could've easily been Kammy Koopa. It seems that Nintendo is afraid to put in any references to the old games, which is disappointing. Nintendo needs to learn that Bowser should only be the main villain in the main series games. It's fine if he serves for a boss fight or two, but I want to fight a new villain every RPG.

I'm really torn on this one. Usually M & L games are an automatic buy for me as well as Paper Mario, but this one looks so.... soulless, at least compared to the games from both series. It just looks so standard. I don't know though, maybe I'm just expecting too much from a crossover game, I certainly made that mistake with Project X Zone.

I feel the same and I didn't even play Project X Zone. Seeing the same standard grass, fire, water, ice, jungle etc environments over and over gets tiresome. Both series have had unique settings out of those because they had some story to make it interesting rather than "magic map says go this way. End.". I would have hoped you go back and forth between the 3D and paper worlds and really add something new but it's what I saw and expected. Just M&L with a third character thrown in that adds very little. I can only hope Intelligent Systems is working on a true Paper Mario for NX either now or after Fire Emblem Fates. Just so long as Miyamoto isn't involved and give us another Sticker Star.

I adore the Paper Mario series, but honestly, I rather enjoy the Mario & Luigi series a little bit more since the battle mechanics in those games were rather addicting to me. So, to see that these two series are mashed together now is what got me excited. I kinda lost a bit of my hype after the whole month gap between it's non-Western release, but I'm still excited. Now, I just have to wait... *TWO MORE DAYS!?* Holy crap, I completely forgot it was coming out this week!

Better than Sticker Star for sure, but I'm not sure it's better than any other Mario RPG, be it the original, Paper Mario or M&L. Sorry but the original characters and different plots are really the things that make me like these games. Take that out and you have turn-based Super Mario Bros.

The Mario and Luigi series is so important to me. I played Superstar Saga when I was about 6 years old and from there, I've enjoyed all the rest of the games. I had this one pre-ordered instantly, and I'm glad to hear it's not another Sticker Star!

I'm so glad to hear a really positive and well-done review for this game because I think that many people think of it as a "lame knockoff of Mario and Luigi series with no personality and not enough of a Paper Mario game" when it's actually REALLY good. The story gets the job done, the dialogue and other stuff is fantastic, the music is excellent, the battle system is great and all of the paper stuff is included very well. And I'm glad that I am not the only one who thought that the bosses were challenging!

the main complaint I keep seeing from people with this game is the apparent lack of new characters, enemy designs, and story elements. I have to say, though, I don't feel these things are always necessary to make a fun, well-designed game. The point of this game is to be a crossover, and while I haven't played it, the general consensus seems to be that this element of the game is executed fairly well... I guess my main point is that it's not always necessary to introduce a bunch of new characters and story elements to make a great entry in a long running, highly popular game franchise. It is supposed to be a crossover, and focuses on popular, pre-existing characters interacting with each other for the first time. I understand the disappointment with the cookie-cutter environments, but I still don't think it makes this a bad game on its own. I'm gonna buy, for sure.

+Ridley the pirate As someone who has the game for a while (french version) I can assure you that this is not a problem. So what if the enemies and boss already existed ? In the end what does matter is the creativity on how you fight them (their attacks and so on), and paper jam has plently of creativity in that aspect, ESPACIALLY with the bosses. I was impressed for almost every one of them for just how creative their attack pattern were. As for normal enemies, a lot of them are the one you don't really ecounter a lot in regular mario games, It's not like you fight goombas ans koopas fot the whole game, is what I am saying.

They made a good decision by using known characters, because this game is about the 3D characters meeting their paper COUNTERPARTS. Goombas and papper goombas, koopas, etc. It wouldn't make sense for a goomba to meet an enemy from Flipside or something like that because they wouldn't be so shocked.

Whereas the first goomba you encounter in paper jam has a pretty funny personality, in the end he may be a simple goomba, but he is more interesting that almost any regular enemie of the whole serie.

I loved when in Neo Bowser's Castle when you chase Nabbit, you could battle him, and have him join in a few battles. Performing Bro Attacks with Nabbit was fun and funny. I mean the face he made when you mess up the attack was priceless!

I think Paper Jam has to be my favorite Mario game to date. Because it has so much character development on a couple characters. Mario tries to be a bit like his Paper counter part and we see more how Peach feels like being kidnapped, and her usual outfit. She has stated she doesn't mind being kidnapped at times and has fun riding in the Koopa Clown Car and they have grown tired of her usual attire and wanted to either chop off her hair or dye it purple. I love this Mario RPG game and will continue to as long as I live.

It's definitely not a bad game, but it's the weakest M&L. There is no story, the interactions between the paper and 3D characters became boring very quickly, it has no unique or interesting overworlds, not a single new character was introduced, paper craft battles were annoying and repetative and the bros.- or trio-attacks are, even though they removed the motion controls, not that great. But the battle system is as good as always and so is the music, even though I prefer the other games' badges over the new battle cards. The game sure is hard, but in an unfair way. Most of the bosses kill you with a single hit, which can make battles very frustrating. Another thing I did not enjoy, were the timed missions, like killing a certain boss in only 4 minutes. But the Toad rescue missions were not that bad. They were creative and sometimes challenging, but felt a bit out of place in a game like this. If you are a fan of the series, you should get this, but if you've never played another entry, you should start with one of the first three games.

Undead WalUwUgi I guess it was how different it is from all the others. Each of the five games has their own gimmick, like the dreams in Dream Team and playing as Bowser in BIS, and I feel like Paper Jam had multiple of those things and even improved on the other ones, like how papercraft battles are just better giant battles, and the whole mechanic of how Paper Mario worked captivated me. Lastly, it finally takes place in the Mushroom kingdom, and I just loved seeing all the other enemies that I would recognize from past games, like King Bob-omb for example, rather than new original enemies that I’ve never seen before and never will see again. I know the unoriginality in enemies annoys many people but I actually liked it a lot, chasing toads and feeling nostalgic as I see those good old goombas I’m so used to beating up😂. I’ve totally gotten carried away writing this and now and I really wanna go play it again😂, but yeah, that’s why I loved Paper Jam the most👌

Wario and Waluigi should be part of a Mario e Luigi game... possibly as the X for Wario and Y for Waluigi... I mean, the jokes, conflicts and abilities pretty much write themselves in that scenario. Stat wise Wario would get obscene damage and defense but bad speed and 'resource' points(the name of these points changes between titles commonly). His abilities having a tendency to steal tangible things from the targets. Waluigi would be fast, with good 'resource' points but lacking in damage and defense and his abilities would have a tendency to weaken his targets, possibly even steal stats for the team. Mario and Luigi would follow the same trend they always have- possibly a little tweaking just to welcome the two anti-heroes. Jokes is the easiest thing due to how conflictive the two sets of bros naturally are. And the conflicts.. or rather, the trials the player has to face can be manipulated often between each of the bros' themes and personalities... like... Wario and Waluigi wanting to steal or claim dominance and this causes conflict constantly so the group tends to split but they ironically help each other achieve a common goal usually preordained by the actual villain of the story. I can already see some of the bros attacks being considerably cheaper than others because they actually grief the opposite bro... Like one of Wario's bros attacks doesn't cost much, but it instead hurts Mario because Wario is like punching him into an enemy.

Wario would have Wario Land themed attacks, like instead of having a hammer Wario would use his infamous shoulder bash, and jumping would have to incorporate the ground pound in some way. Waluigi is an interesting case, sports themed moves is what I’m thinkin’, but I can’t come up with anything.

I agree with this idea but aren't wario and waluigi Mario and Luigi's rival? They shouldn't work together. Instead, they should have spread story and even fight each other in some areas. Like mario and luigi get their own story and wario and waluigi also get their own story. And maybe at the final boss, all four characters work together.

Paper Jam: The crossover/5th game for both M&L and Paper Mario, The Final game in the M&L series, the Last time Paper Mario had RPG mechanics (even if it is in the M&L format), and the 2nd time Toads have plagued the games (with Color Splash being the 3rd)

This is a definite buy for me. You see, Mario & Luigi (for me at least) was about interaction between the brothers. If there weren't that many new characters, I'm ok with that. What I was most excited for in the game was how the character interact with there Paper Counterparts. And it seems like the team knew that from the very beginning. I aslo like Paper Mario's Copy ability and how it adds a whole new attribute in the battlefield. Do I add more copies to do more damage in the Long Run? Do I just go and attack but have the risk of him dying? I like that kind of depth and it makes you think.

I have an Idea for a possible Paper Jam sequel that uses character exclusive to Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario. So we know that Luigi opened a book with the Paper Mario world in it. But how did that book get there? Surely someone must have written it right. So maybe that creator of the book(Not yet decided on a name)had originally created a portal instead of a book and was actually trying to unleash devastating powers from the Paper Mario world onto the Mario and Luigi world(Or something like that) However Peach found out and as punishment she trapped that guy in a prison in the Paper Mario world. However they were unsuccessful in closing the portal so they disguised it as a book instead. When Luigi opened the book in Paper Jam he also freed the book's creator from his prison as well and while the first game was going on he was analyzing the villains that appeared in both games throughout the years and planned to resurrect one from each and use them to conquer both worlds. He chose Fawful(because the Dark Star almost covered the world in darkness) and Dimentio(Because the Chaos Heart almost brought an end to all worlds) to be revived. First he had to recreate the Dark Star and The Chaos heart in their respective worlds to be able to revive the last people that ever controlled them(Fawful and Dimentio respectively). However something went wrong with the process(or it was interfered) and instaed of normal Fawful and Paper Dimentio, we ended up getting Paper Fawful and normal Dimentio. Then they get mad at the creator for ruining them so the ended him and decided to work together to fulfill their desires using each other's Assets.(Dimentio with the Dark Star and Fawful with the Chaos Heart). And also since the chaos heart needs Luigi as it's host it may target Paper Luigi again. And when Mario and Luigi realize they need help they'll go to the book and ask Paper Mario to help them once again. I still haven't decided where to include Bowser in the story though. So what do you guys think. Think it might be any good?

I am still a little upset that you don't see memorable paper characters like Goombella and Francis, brought back, I will always still love the Mario RPGs. They're fun to play, make me laugh, give me good challenges, all topped off with great music. Definitely picking this one up when it comes out in America ( its release date, I have forgotten...)

This is what I loved about this game that Sticker Star failed at; It Wasn't about the journey being super intresting and complex like most of the Mario RPGS, but about how well executed the interactions of the characters are and a nice fusion of Partners In Time and Sticker Star.

I just bought this game to waste time until Origami King and I found it very fun to play. I am now struggling on bosses, mainly the Wiggler one, but this game feels nice and interesting and the interaction between the Paper Mario characters and Mario and Luigi characters is fun. I really enjoyed the conversation the Princess Peaches had on Mt. Brrr, as it shows a nice fresh side to them. :)

As an avid fan of this series, I'm so insanely disappointed with this game. It just follows a lot of generic tropes and things they've done in previous games, while not really improving it. Not to mention all the stupid side-quests, backtracking, and the constant attacks on Luigi. I mean they really fucking grill Luigi to kind of a ridiculous extent. Paper Mario is chill and generally is cool towards Luigi while Mario watches, and Starlow just doesn't shut the hell up. Especially when it comes to bitching at Luigi for things he can't control half the time. Some of the jokes are funny, and it has its moments, but nothing that really stood out to me. I miss the interesting characters, I miss the way the game felt, I miss the hilarity that would happen. As for combat, the "tells" are a complete pain now. A few have the usual technique, but others are literally just a bit randomized and annoying as hell to dodge or counter. Don't even get me started on the 2 extra card additions that are just not needed. Especially the Amiibo bullshit. "Want a shiny version? Well you better have two of the same Amiibo, the card(s), and possibly another game/3ds!" All in all it just feels like they just took out everything that made both games what they are, and just stuffed it full of shit to bloat it and make it feel complete. There's nothing like having to waste time doing some new move to progress. Especially when it's over and over. I'm probably being nitpicky/nostalgic, but I just don't pick this game up and want to keep playing. I pick it up, do a bit, then drop it for days at a time. It just doesn't have the deep story, the fun characters, and the things that made both games fun and unique. They feel like a different game with popular titles slapped into it to sell copies.

the combat was good and the whole game was a good RPG, but I felt like it was missing something, specifically with the areas. they were a pretty standard selection of, snow (mountains), fire (desert), water, (islands), forest+ plains, and then Bowser's castle. the areas felt too similar to the ones in dream team, which may have done the same formula, but each of them had a more unique element to them. for instance the desert had that drill cart, and the whole inclusion of a second dimension in games like dream team and inside story, which gave the gameplay some variety and made for some fun puzzles. but this game didn't have that, so I felt like it was weaker than the other titles in the series

Overall, I honestly don't have much complaints about this game. The gameplay seems great, and the battle style looks very challenging (in a good way), and has great dialogue and new & interesting things to learn about certain characters. Sure, this game does lack new, and original characters, but I feel we should be a little appreciative for the developers staying safe this time around. And frankly, I agreed with Derrick about worrying whether if the battle cards would make this game easy, and rather overpowered, but over time, it proved itself otherwise. So I'll gladly pick this game up on my way home Friday afternoon. But the only thing that sort of bugs me is some of the Bros. Attacks. Not all of them, but just a few that seems WAY too easy to pull off, or not so interesting. Like, Mario's Cannonball Chuck, of course, I know you have to angle it in the air so it can correctly land on your opponent, but it seems way to easy to pull off with just one swing and BAM! Easy damage. And the Toad Trail (which I heard is hard to pull off) just seems uninteresting and rather generic. Usually the Bros. have some epic Final attack they find near the end, like the Mix Flower from PiT, the Falling Star from BIS, and the Zee Egg from Dream Team. Toad Trail just looks...boring, which is my only problem, but nevertheless, I still am excited to pick this game up.

I see this game as fan service for Mario and Luigi and Paper Mario fans. I played both series and love them and I'm looking forward to playing this entry. I'm just hoping that the story will keep me interested and is not just another typical save Princess Peach scenario.

Sounds like you enjoyed Paper Jam a lot more than Dream Team. Which I consider a good thing due to the fact that the game's progression is pretty darn sluggish. I'm also glad that they mad the game less tutorial-heavy, which is one of the reason why I hardly replay Dream Team. And I can forgive the lack of a good story, new characters, unique oveworlds for the gameplay, humorous writing, and great soundtarck. The fact that they didn't introduce original characters, but gave the primary characters like Toadette and the Koopalings more fleshed out personalities makes me wish that they could've done this years ago. The boss battles themselves are pretty darn fun the fight. I will agree with the Paper Toads Missions that some are fun and creative, while others are kinda...meh. Still, I can definitely say this is a much more enjoyable game than Sticker Star (which a lot of people have already commented on). It may seem like just a simple Mario RPG with no new plot, characters, or references to previous titles, but it's more like the characters interacting with their paper counterparts. Which I enjoy a lot.

Gameplay is a definite must, because I can't be bothered progressing through the plot if the gameplay is utter shite. I remember when this game came out, I had a massive ego trip with it and I thought it was a steaming pile of horse shit because of how it lacked a lot of potential to be fantastic. I still do hate it for that same reason, but seeing how the company who made this games went bankrupt nearly a year ago, I can really blame it on the lack of money they had after the fourth game came out. Realistically they should've stopped the series after the fourth game and move away from Nintendo so they wouldn't have lost the economic value to keep the studio running.

There is a blocking mechanic in battle, it doesn't work the same way as in the Paper Mario games but it's still something.

While the game play seems to hold up to the standard set by the other Mario & Luigi games, I still can't get over the lack of story, creative characters, or even interesting new areas to explore. Also, at this point, can we drop the whole "Giant Battle" motif? It was fine for BIS, and improved upon in Dream Team, but now it's just getting stale. Personally, I'd very much prefer to see a Superstar Saga remake with Dream Team's visuals over another game of this type in the near future. (Also, let's get crackin' on a proper Paper Mario game!)

I'll preface by saying that I played Superstar Saga as well as the first 3 Paper Mario games when I was younger, and they hold a special place in my heart. Now, I'm an hour or so into this game, and I think my desire to enjoy it is so far outweighing the small negatives I've found. It definitely seems like it is extremely geared towards children, though. Yes, I'm smart enough to know that Nintendo games are classically marketed to kids, but I suppose it seems like they're hammering it in more and more as time goes on. It definitely doesn't have the unique charm that Paper Mario does. My view is probably skewed by the fact that I played these games as a kid, and if I was younger I probably would just eat this game up like the rest. I'm just wondering if anyone else feels the way I do. Maybe I'm just suffering from Rose-tinted Nostalgia vision, but Paper Mario on N64 and TTYD (even Super Paper Mario, which I feel a bit less strongly about) feel so alive and full of character and creative love whereas this game seems pretty shoe-horned together. The papercraft battling is at least an interesting idea and isn't tedious (yet), but it feels randomly placed, as if it was designed for another game. Mario and Luigi's models are even 3D during it, which is a total departure from the Mario & Luigi style.
