Mario & Luigi Series Characters: Good to Evil
We’ve already done two videos on the Paper Mario games, so it’s only fair that we show some love to the other Mario RPG spinoff series: Mario and Luigi. This series doesn’t have quite as many characters as the early Paper Mario games, which is why we didn’t split this topic into two separate lists.
However, less characters than Paper Mario can still be a lot of characters. From the odd Beanbean kingdom, to the sleepy Pi'illo Island, to the Mushroom Kingdom’s past and present... There’s quite an eccentric and memorable cast. But which of these characters are truly good, and which are the most evil? That’s what we’re asking today.

I really think Elder Princess Shroob should be ranked slightly lower than her younger sister. She actually shows compassion for her sister, unlike vice versa, and she's genuinely doing what she believes is best for her people. The younger Princess Shroob seems to go out of her way to be malicious, and she honestly behaves kind of like a brat.

I'd actually rank Luigi above Mario, the moment where he shares the cookie with his baby self on Yoshi's Island is so wholesome, and he did it when nobody was looking so he didn't require the glory of being recognised as kind-hearted

I have to disagree with the bad to evil category since 1. The Shroobs actually care about each other and all they wanted was a new home after their old one was destroyed 2. The Dark Star is amoral so it doesn't know the difference between good and evil 3. You were right to rank Fawful higher than Antasma in your Mario villains list. But now that accuracy is thrown out the window 4. Fawful has the longest list of crimes in the Mario and Luigi series such as multiple successful killings even on screen, attempted world domination, both physical and mental torture, stealing, attempted murder, false imprisonment, causing an epidemic with the same disease on 2 races, attempted betrayal, attempted populicide, brainwashing, and being the one to unleash the Dark Star in the first place so everything the Dark Star does is all Fawful's fault. Plus Fawful would rather kill himself than find it within himself to find redemption if it wasn't for the fact that he's comedic relief he would have landed a pure evil wiki spot since Fawful not only knows that he's evil and lacks morals but he loves every second of it. As a result Fawful the REAL most evil character in the Mario and Luigi series. 5. Antasma could also count as amoral since he's just a physical embodiment of nightmares similar to how the Dark Star is a physical embodiment of darkness. But I do agree with Bowser's ranking

While I agree with you about Fawful, I personally disagree with you about Princess Shroob, she knows what she's doing is wrong and doesn't care, the only thing that prevents her from being considered pure evil is the fact the she cares about her sister.

And speaking of in the Mario and Luigi series King Boo would end up in the grey area this time not as dark grey as Bowser though but only because he only has 1 appearance unfortunately seriously King Boo aside from Luigi Mansion and the Sports games he is criminally underutilized.

@@Wolfywolf7 yeah when he isn't in Luigi's Mansion he's pretty much Loki sometimes villainous sometimes pleasant depending on the moment. And when that gem is on his head his darkest side rears it's purely evil head. Anyways I like both designs the Luigi's Mansion design is the best for intimidation and when he's being a straight up villain. His other design is good when he's in a docile albeit mischievous mood. Also here is what I have in mind for King Boo in future games. 1. The next Paper Mario game: secret boss and post story mode playable character. 2. Luigi's Mansion 4: obviously the main antagonist and final boss. And this should be the game that officially confirms that King Boo is NOT Bowser's ghost just to keep King Boo as his own character. 3. Mario Kart 10: 1 out of 10 of the default roster playable characters alongside Mario, Peach, Bowser, Luigi, Toad, Yoshi, DK, Wario, and Waluigi. 4. The next New Super Mario Bros game: secret boss

@@Wolfywolf7 I have my own idea of what King Boo or the Boo species are in general. They're a form of mischievous spirits not spirits of the dead in fact they would be more similar to fairies from the Zelda series except more ghostlike and more willing to cause chaos. And since you can't permanently kill a Boo they are in a way immortal ( King Boo states in the DS remake of Mario 64 that Boos can't die for good so they'll always be back and he's no exception) which is why they can be effective soldiers (given that they don't require things that Bowser's other minions would require and they are very hard to beat if you aren't just playing with a star or other items similar to the star) which is why Bowser more often than not makes partnerships with King Boo and even has Boos in his army.

I personally think Bowser should be ranked evil instead of neutral. Sure, he did try to help Mario and Luigi in superstar saga, but that was only because he didn’t want his castle being destroyed when he kidnaps peach. Sure, he did go through a lot of things in Superstar saga, like getting amnesia, working with popple, getting unconcous and turned to bowletta, and even blown up in the end. That game was the only time bowser didn’t deserve what was coming to him. But the other games tell a different story. In partners in time, he willingly teamed up with his younger self to try and stop the bros just to kidnap peach, once more. In bowsers inside story, he actually DID help to save the day. But not because it’s for morality. It’s because he had the mindset of “No one can take over this world, except me”. He only went on this journey to try and beat Mario. Dream team however, he was the most evil. Teaming up with Antasma, actually defeating the bros when they had their guard down, setted off with Antasma to steal the dream stone, plot for world domination, kidnapping peach AGAIN, even betraying Antasma in the end, and ended up swallowing the dream stones shards, which corrupted him into a Godlike being of evil.

I wouldn’t say Princess and Elder Princess Shroob are as evil as, let’s say Fawful. They at least cared for their species and each other, and wanted to do the best for them, even if their tactics are pure evil and horrifying for their victims. But Fawful had no care in the world for anyone but himself, even planning to betray and kill Cackletta. He nearly drained and annihilated Peach for his own use of her voice, was the one to awake the dark star, and even when he was defeated he tried to use the last of his powers to blow up the Weegee bros. His plans involved him taking over Bowser and Peach’s castles and causing everyone to become BEEG bois so he can be unstoppable. He deserves the gold medal of chortles and evilness, and if you don’t agree you may as well just be brainwashed so you can bow to the Lord Fawful.

This was pretty alright for the most part. I felt it wasn't as well researched as the Kirby video to be honest. It's missing important characters and there are some things I felt may have been missed. You forgot: The Koopalings. They're important characters, as they were highly important to both Minion Quest and Bowser Jr.'s Journey. The rest of the Elite Captain Quartet. They're also important. They're Captain Goomba's main partners. The rest of the Shroobs. The Shroobs in general are important to rank due to their importance to Partners in Time's plot. While yeah, most of what they did could be summed up in the Princess Shroob section, it's probably important to note them as well. Corrections: Peach's reason for being on the low end of good is a pretty shallow one. I'd argue mostly being kidnapped means she's not likely to have the screen time to do much anyway, so it's less impactful for her overall morality than implied in the video. She still deserves to be on the low end of good though because she still risked the poor Birdo's voice being replaced with explosive vocabulary as a strategy. While for the greater good so that Cackletta couldn't use the Bean Star, she basically used some random bystander as a meat shield for her plan, which could be considered somewhat manipulative in nature, even if for a good cause. That, and using telekinesis to throw Bowser out of her castle doesn't do her morality any favors, considering she never does that when she's kidnapped, and it's never explained why that is. Mario has to save her plenty of times despite her potentially having the power to clearly defend herself in those situations. Is the Birdo that Peach used the same one that is Popple's Rookie? I don't remember Birdo's voice ever returning to her, so I doubt it's the same Birdo, even if Super Mario Wiki seems to think it is. Britta should probably be below Brickle. I got the vibe that many of her workers were frightened of her, even if it's fair to ensure they aren't slacking. Brickle's worst deed was a misunderstanding and a waste of time. Plus, if I recall correctly, Britta got herself in danger because when Mario and Luigi uncovered that passageway up the sandflow, she told them to stay put because it was rumored that there would be treasure, and went in by herself with a goal of stashing it for herself in mind. A greedy act that didn't end well. Nitpicks: I have trouble trying to gather whether Fawful being evil enough that he'd likely have no problem doing what Antasma did constitutes as enough to put him on the bronze medal of evil instead of Antasma, but ultimately, it could probably go either or. Fawful's clearly more evil minded considering Antasma's genuine team up with Bowser, so in a sense, he should be higher, but Antasma's got a higher body count, so it's probably fair to put him lower on the morality scale since the body count is more proof than just knowing the character and assuming he'd do the same offered the chance. This is a nitpick, take it with a grain of salt.

Great opinions on good to evil! However in my opinion the number one most evil villain is none other than The Dark Star because it’s evil eyes and it’s dark and has the ability to turn everything into darkness.

Me personally it's Fawful since 1. The Dark Star is amoral it doesn't know the difference between good and evil it acts on instinct rather than motive. 2. Fawful was the one who unleashed the Dark Star in the first place 3. Aside from being comedic Fawful lacks any of the redeeming qualities that some of the other villains have for example Cackletta: she genuinely cared about Fawful even if she wasn't overly protective ( the feeling is NOT mutual, in fact Fawful planned to get rid of her when she was no longer useful to him) The Shroobs: they genuinely care about each other and all they really wanted was a new home after they lost their old homeworld. Antasma: was genuinely hurt when Bowser betrayed him albeit Bowser had a good reason to. The BFF's: they do care about each other even if they are rude to each other they basically act like they are siblings. Fawful lacks any of those qualities in fact the only reason he isn't pure evil is because he's comedic relief.

Like if that was his motive why did he literally never once mention her, even when ranting about his past she isn't even an afterthought. He never says stuff about losing her, it's always about how he lost and got screwed over. Just like how after Midbus died or whatever, Fawful never mentions him again either. Yet I've seen a lot of people try to force this headcanon that he cares about one or both of them, maybe to make him redeemable or something idk?

@@lolsu5820 Yikk was the owner of the Tower of Yikk who slumbered in the book Bowser opened after he defeated the tower. Yikk tells Bowser about his research on boos then introduces the Boo Ray Machine for Bowser to use so Mario & Luigi can go after the first star sage in Bowser's body, after Bowser uses the Boo Ray the first time Yikk calls the first use of the Boo Ray on a living being a sucess then goes back to sleep in his book. It wasn't a large role in the game but I still enjoyed it

You're wrong about the shroobs. Yes, they made a show out of conquering the mushroom kingdom, but they went to earth because their home planet was dying. They needed a new home and new sources of energy. Of course they took it in very violent and cruel ways, but I thought the shroob princesses wanted the best for their people. Why do you think there were no other planets mentioned that the shroobs had? Because there weren't any. Likely the shroobs stayed on their planet, minding their own business, until they had no choice but to seek new lands

I would say the most evil would be the shroobs definitely. Their goals seemed to be destruction and conquest, not relaly carring how many bodies they have to trample over to do so. Heck, the one of the first "dungeons" of the game (vim factory), you see toads having their life force sucked out of them, ensnared by trees, just to power their fleet. IMO, the shroobs had the most "evil" vibes and were fairly close to victory, really only failing due the the Mario bros. and dumb luck.

nope it has to be Fawful since 1. the Shroobs care about each other and they conquered out of necessity since they only wanted a new home after their old one was destroyed 2. Fawful unleashed the Dark Star in the first place and he doesn't care about the collateral damage 3. in fact Fawful aside from being comedic has NO redeeming qualities he doesn't care about anyone and he will stop at nothing until he gets what he wants. 4. the Mario Bros couldn't stop him without Bowser and visa versa. combined with dumb luck as a result Fawful was even closer to victory than the shroobs.

Pretty sure Shroobs give 2 craps about collateral damage as well. 3. Shroobs have zero redeeming qualities as well. 4. Dumb Luck never had anything to do with Fawful failing. And we don't know what would have happened if Bowser didn't get involved. Also, the BFF were in the midst of betraying him and likely would have succeeded if not for Bowser Jr. The Shroobs meanwhile were far closer to succeeding...in fact, they had even succeeded for a time. I will give you that mentality, Fawful and the Shroobs were very similar in goals...as was Cackletta for that matter. But the Shroobs were the closest to actually achieving their goals.

Princess Shroob and Elder Princess Shroob both care about each other with Elder Princess Shroob saying that she will avenge her sister after the Mario Bros killed her. And Elder Princess Shroob and Princess Shroob alike while they may not care about individuals they do care about their whole race. 2. The collateral damage with Fawful is even bigger given that the Dark Star threatens life itself and Fawful doesn't even care just as long as he can kill the Mario Bros yeah he'll obliterate kingdoms if not the entire world if it means getting rid of a couple of people. 3. Caring about others especially family is a redeeming quality and Princess Shroob and her big sister do care about each other like I said before. 4. The BFF's if they couldn't even beat the Koopalings and Bowser Jr how could they be a real threat to Fawful especially given that Fawful at one point knocked Bowser out with a single blast of his vacuum helmet and Bowser is obviously stronger than the Koopalings and just as strong if not stronger than Bowser Jr. Also yeah Bowser was neccessary in stopping Fawful especially given how Fawful planned things since he planned to incapacitate most of the population by inflating them with blorbs, then using Bowser as a means of getting rid of everyone else by have Bowser eat them. And also there are many things left to sheer dumb luck for example if Bowser didn't encounter Brogue Monseir he wouldn't get the vacuum block and that was a key part in stopping Fawful, if Bowser wasn't blown into the Cavi Cape tunnels he couldn't get to the area where he gets blasted by electricity and as a result the Mario Bros wouldn't have access to the warp pipes that lead out of Bowser's body so they would be stuck inside him as a result they wouldn't even learn about the Star Cures so Fawful would would be free to get the Dark Star without intervention and even if they somehow managed to learn about the Star Cures the Mario Bros would never be able to get all 3 of them since they would be stuck inside Bowser and Bowser would be stuck inside a safe so yeah Fawful's defeat was down to sheer dumb luck.

About their whole race, sure, but that’s more because they are conquerors and that’s part of their power. Fawful falls into that camp too tbh, he cares enough about his army he brainwashes them instead of killing them outright…plus he did revive Cackletta, something he did not have to do. He clearly had some care for his master. 2. That’s super speculative and tbh not even true. He clearly values his whole life, and his goal has always been personal power…which is why he absorbed the dark star’s power instead of just letting it lose. He wants to rule the whole world. He was only willing to sacrifice himself after he was already beaten and on the brink of death anyways. That hardly counts. 3. Just like Fawful cares about Cackletta, and to a lesser extent Midbus. 4. A few points. Captain Goomba and his crew which included the Koopalings had defeated Fawful…twice…in the same manner that Bowser Jr. defeated the BFF…the exact same manner actually. So even if you want to use that point, it kind of goes against you. Fawful, an upgraded version lost to Bowser, so that point is also down the drain. In the first game, that was just a surprise attack, and a stab in the back is hardly considered a “I beat you 1v1 fair and square” fight. And that is superseded anyways by my previous point about Captain Goomba. All that “luck” you mentioned, was actually just player progression and a result of Fawful’s own doing or Bowser’s/Mario’s doing. If you want to take that literally, then every single story was “dumb luck.” And that doesn’t actually help your point. What I was referring to with the Shroobs was when Bowser abducted “Princess Peach,” as well later found out that actually put a wrenching the shroob’s plan to take over the future. It was blind dumb luck that Bowser had showed up, it wasn’t due to the Mario Bros. actions or the shroobs actions, it just happened, and it was to the detriment of the shroobs.

Fawful takes a similar approach to this except the roles are reversed to a degree, Fawful keeps Cackletta around so she can conquer the Mushroom and Beanbean Kingdoms so when Fawful makes his move to get rid of her he can assume power without much trouble nice and easy. Also no Fawful doesn't care about Midbus either since he doesn't even bat an eye when Midbus dies in fact he brushes it off like it was nothing. Also Fawful like all villains is arrogant and Bowser had help from his minions in the battle against Fawful ( particularly in that attack when Fawful summons lots of energy balls and Bowser has to throw Goombas at him. ) also my dumb luck argument is more legitimate than you give it credit for since what do you think would have happened if Bowser wasn't blown directly into the Cavi Cape tunnels which the moles were digging if that didn't happen then the Mario Bros wouldn't have discovered the pipe yard and as a result they wouldn't have been able to collect all 3 Star Cures even if some of the other events were to come to pass since Bowser and the Mario Bros indirectly would be stuck in a safe in a junkyard, Fawful would have taken the power of the Dark Star and he would have won. All it took for Fawful's plans to go awry was Bowser getting blown to the right place at the right time.

If you ask me that makes him more heroic being fearful of the unknown the unpredictability of the outside world on what’s out there the endless possibilities of your demise that would scared anyone yet Luigi still perceive to go on I like to think that the one thing that scares him more than the monsters in the mushroom kingdom is the fear of losing his friends and family and uses that as motivation to power though the obstacles in his way even if some he gets treated poorly by his them he still goes though life and death to save them not really asking anything in return and that’s why he’s my favorite character in the Mario universe

In my opinion Dark Star is the truly worst of the bunch. The only reason it is defeated is that dark star got Cocky after absorbing the other half of his power (stolen by Fawful) after being recently reawakened and still not used to it's mimicked body of bowser, by the legends Dark star was a universe level threat, who I doubt even Princess Rosalina could defeat. Antasma atleast had the argument of being manipulated and turned evil from the wishes of Nightmare stone.

Where are the Koopalings? They were like, main characters in Bowser Junior's Journey, I think they deserved to be on this list, yet they aren't... And also the other Captains as well, they're all distinct characters... Also, Peach should have been much lower due to the fact she used a Birdo in order to save her own sorry ass from Fawful and Cackletta taking her voice, and the worst part is Mario and Luigi failed to get it back, and so the poor Birdo lives the rest of her life with that explosive vocabulary that Fawful and Cackletta meant to replace Peach's voice with, so yeah, Peach is not good IMO, and I think Peach should have been a little lower... I also hate Peach for a variety of other reasons as well... Also, Starlow is such a massive asshole and an annoying pest, Starlow should also be much lower on the list as well IMO...

Although im late to the party, Luigi is probably my number 1 spot, although he is not as brave and collected under stressful situations and is cowardly at times. He himself in the mario and luigi games along with luigis Mansion Games, luigi has a problem with low self-esteem and having low confidence in himself. Even with his flaws, he saved his brother from eternal imprisonment of king boo and was almost imprisoned himself trying too. He agreed to take peaches' place as Cacklettas hostage and took the bean star back. I mean, he has chosen himself to go along with plans that could get himself into trouble or hurt, but he does it for the sake of his brother and the people he cares for. Luigi may not be brave like his brother, but he has the courage to step up alongside his brother to save the day even when he is scared.
