Ranking EVERY Mario RPG

Over the past 25+ years, Nintendo has had quite a bit of Mario RPGs to hit the shelves from the original Super Mario RPG on the SNES to the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi series respectively and of course a couple of RPGs that are not in a series. There are a total of 14 different Mario RPGs and like with any ranking, this list is completely subjective. One more note, I will be talking about remakes or remasters, just the original versions. It is based on my personal enjoyment of each game.

I mean that's what paper mario is, it was originally called RPG2. See the only real flaw with RPG is that it's not really a mario rpg, it's an rpg with a mario skin. Paper mario was the first to really take the spirit of the mario IP as if it were an rpg. You can even see this with the presentation, rpgs strengths are in the story, so it becomes a storybook with the character popping out of the pages.

Super Mario RPG is so hard to make a sequel to imo. It was so perfect and likely if they remade it or made a sequel of any kind as Paper Mario is. It's not the same.

Paper mario 1 is not peak but definetely the pioneer for the paper mario games. TTYD perfected the formula and after super paper mario they decided to just dump the series in the trash

I haven't played any of them except super. I don't really like turn based combat that much in a story based game, to me it feels like it breaks the flow of the game, so I don't think I would enjoy the first ones as much. I also played mario RPG and the timed button mini games and battles either being completely inconvenient and basically useless or way too difficult was my least favorite part of the game. I don't think that those games are bad or anything, I just get more enjoyment from progression in the story rather than a good turned based system because they often lack need of skill and just require a good strategy. Therefore you either get OP and there is no challenge, or they are to strong and they wipe out your team then you grind weaker guys until you have the previous problem again.

@@_shadow_1 man if you didnt like the the timed hits in Super Mario RPG then Mario RPGs probably just aren't for you. I love the story but the timed hits are the best part of the game. It's so much fun. I finally got 100 Super Jumps and it took me 2 weeks of training a couple hours a day to finally do it. One of my greatest gaming achievements. I don't understand how you could say it breaks the flow of the gameplay, it IS the gameplay!

Mario and luigi dream team is an underrated masterpiece. Why do so many people hate it? Like honestly I'm confused, any knocks I hear on the game are confusing because sometimes they just aren't true. The biggest issue is those stupid tutorials but then you're back on track.and playing this amazing game. Best game in the mario and luigi series. And I've played bowsers inside story.

I really like Dream Team. It’s in my top 3 Mario and Luigi games, but my biggest issue with it is the length. I started playing it for the first time probably around a year ago and I do really like it, it’s just too long. Going from the first three games being anywhere between 8-16 hours then 35+ in Dream Team is jarring

Wanna know something we have in common? In Mario and Luigi Bowser's inside Story, I also got stuck on the carrot minigame. the difference is that I got stuck on it FOR YEARS!!!! I eventually figured it out and until then, I grinded to hell and back, made the game a lot easier afterward, that's for sure.

A bit of history: SMPRG was Square Enix and Nintendo's first attempt to create an RPG that the West would enjoy. Because of this they went the extra mile and had the stript not only tanslated, but localized, which was unheard of at the time. And because of this game we got Kingdom Hearts. Same composer did the music for both KH and SMRPG and she regards SMRPG as one of her greatest works. And when you think about it, the concept for KH is in SMRPG. The Culex fight being the perfect example. Also it was one of the last games developed for the SNES and it was actually one of the most technologically impressive games on the SNES. The only reason we got paper Mario instead of a proper sequel is because Square Enix had a falling out with Nintendo over using carts vs disks. With that being said, I respect your opinion. I'm talking about innovation while you are just describing your gaming experience, but a lot of the comments you make about it can be explained or excused away if you understand the amount of innovation that went into it. While innovation doesn't equal good gameplay, I hope these explanations at least help you understand why this game is easily considered as one of the greatest of all time. Innovation, talent, and a clear vision with near flawless execution for the time.

The thing that really brought Origami King down for me is that the battle system is not actually combat, for essentially the first time in the series. It’s puzzles that, if solved correctly, let you instantly defeat all enemies (provided you have strong enough “weapons” in your inventory and don’t mess up the easy action commands) or require you to continue with another smaller puzzle if you don’t solve it on the first try. If you line enemies up, then you always do the same action command for a line of enemies. If you group them up, then you do the action command for a square group of enemies, barring using an item, which is almost always unnecessary. The combat is all about solving the same puzzles throughout the whole game. And while the bosses were unique in their fights, they are basically a frustrating game of trial and error of doing things in the right order the first time you fight them, and every subsequent playthrough makes each of them a flow chart. Do this, then this, then this, and maybe heal somewhere in there if you need it. I did overall enjoy my first playthrough, as some of the environments were a lot of fun to explore (the studio and the ocean are two standouts for me), but the rings got very old for me about halfway through the game, and I tried playing through it again in 2022 but wasn’t able to finish the purple streamer before the rings wore me down.

By the title I thought it would be a more objective take on a ranking list to help me figure out what game to play next. I was mistaken, it's really a personal list with a heavy dose of nostalgia as the bulk of the reasoning for some games. Still enjoyed watching the video, though I learned my lesson and should check out other channels.

Wonderful video, but I think you might want to double-check your editing. Things like visual errors with the DS games, the remake of the Cackletta fight being shown for a split second, the #2 nametag suddenly turning into "#1 Super Paper Mariohousand year door", and the abrupt ending and lack of conclusion on Super Paper Mario are all some errors I found in this video, making it seem rushed out to meet some sort of deadline. Other than that, I agree with a lot of this list, and you have some well-said opinions!

I can't argue with super paper mario making it to the top as it is one of my favorite mario games. Even though it's combat is different from the other RPG marios (which I haven't played except for mario RPG), I personally like the active combat that super paper mario has more because encounter driven turn based systems can get stale/repetitive pretty fast and it often breaks the flow of the game, which is more often than not, very annoying to me.

Although I grew up in the 90s and played a whole lot of Super Nintendo, surprisingly my first experience with any kind of Mario RPG was not Super Mario rpg. I watched my older brother and a friend of his play the game but that was it. I believe we rented it from Hollywood video which by the way was a chain that competed against Blockbuster video back then. Like you the first Mario RPG I ever played was Mario and Luigi Superstar saga. Definitely an extremely highly enjoyable game especially when I did in fact have a Game boy player so I can play the game on the big screen which made it so much better.

Personally I believed that Origami King's story is slightly on par with the originals. While yeah it does stick to the arts and crafts theme established in Sticker Star and Color Splash, it makes it work. I really enjoyed Bobby's character arc and was upset when he sacrificed himself. Olly also has a similar tragedy to Bleck from Super Paper Mario, in that he believes he was wronged and reshaping the world in his own way is the only way to make things right, no matter how many people suffer, while Bleck was wronged in that he lost everything and was driven to be evil while Olly was just a misunderstanding. Remember people, I am just writing my opinion, you can disagree with me but you don't have to get out right horrible. Thank you to the people who read the comment all the way through.

Thousand year door was the favorite of the ones I've played, but it bothers me how excited and happy people are to get a remake of a game we already have. And people say "not everyone played it" but the ones who are so excited usually have. We need to push for new quality games not just ones that already released. its a problem now when the best games are just remakes and not new titles.

I respect super paper Mario as your favorite game, it is my third favorite Mario game. (including all games with the name Mario in the title, even though I believe paper Mario is just a different person than Mario) personally ttyd is my favorite and super Mario sunshine is my second. But I definitely like somebody giving credit to where credits due. So many people rate this low on the Mario game tier list it’s just nice to hear it’s someone’s favorite game.

I actually think paper jam works because for the past 4 games we never get proper environment and before you come kill me about inside story the Mario and Luigi part of that game more then make up for it. We actually got a proper vanilla Mario rpg except they still keep it fresh with the paper kingdom coming in it still feels fresh to me personally and we also get some bosses that were once boring now completely revamped like the wiggler fight and we also get duo fights even a trio fight at one point this is very small but very good changes in my opinion it’s not the boring slog that most people thought it was also I would like to mention the huge amount of bosses we get some very good bosses that haven’t really been shown in recent games like Petey Piranha, King Boo, Kamek (as a separate boss) and King B are all really clever fights that we have either never seen before or we barely ever see

I agree with almost everything you said about Mario and Luigi Paper Jam however in my opinion it's better then then the new Paper Mario games because what it lacks in story it makes up for with a normal battle system which is nothing new for Mario and Luigi but Paper Mario is now known for having bad and pointless battle systems (not including the first 3).

I’ve seen this become a trend a lot more recently. In baseball it’s known as the Bryce Harper Effect where he is a great player who just got talked about so much to the point he became overrated and then people started to just say he’s not that good because he’s overrated then making him underrated because he is still a great player.

I'd mostly agree, except I'd move Super to mid-tier and bump RPG up to third. I think though that regardless of personal taste, the elements that made the series turn for worse were first seen in Paper Mario and Super Paper Mario. Paper Mario gets a bit of a pass for the reasons you mention in the video. Super Paper Mario, not so much. The dumbing down of the gameplay became more or less status quo for every Mario RPG afterwards. Lack of partners, a bit of an empty battle experience, etc. As for story I'm not sure exactly what prompted Miyamoto to stupidly conclude that the story in these games was unpopular, maybe it was because Dream Team and its sequel did worse than expected. I tend to think he came to that conclusion around the time of SPM. This though is just a Miyamotoism, just one in many examples of Miyamoto makung desicions that would hurt Nintendo and kill a series.

Based number 1, have you tried Bug Fables btw? It was a spiritual successor to Thousand year door sorta, a completely unique story made by devs that missed the old paper Mario combat and even changed it up quite a bit

@@williamraboine2462 I mean I definitely understand that perspective, but it was just inspired by TTYD, and there is 3 characters all with a lot of character rather than just half a chapter each. And all 3 of them have several different play styles from making Kabbu unkillable, to Vi generating insane amounts of healing over time, or making any character DPS more than a mega rush yoshi kid. Also status transfer badges + immunity and stat buffs based on statuses is very cute idea. Also ngl I love that super guards aren't present cause it makes combat so pointless if you're good at the game, but "super block" just reducing "more" damage is a much better change. I mean you have 3 characters on the field vs 2 and it's still extremely balanced and challenging. I do like how the different partners have different identities in TTYD, but let's be honest, we all usually "main" only 1 or 2 depending on fights or chapters and playstyles. I mean show me the guy who uses Ms. mowz unironically unless they're stealing an item. Yes they all have different dialogue for story beats depending on who you have equipped, but realistically you won't see most of them unless you try for it cause we'll always gravitate towards our favorites. Bug Fables does away with that and has all the cast out at once leaving nobody in the background.

god i love spm so much. admittedly its super easy to say its my favorite mario game since its the only one ive played. i remember getting it as a child and not being able to make it past the first battle with o'chunks but ive since played it through fully and i'm so so in love with this game and honestly though theres no real overlap in gameplay id highly recommend it to fans of undertale and deltarune because the themes of the story as well as the humor seem to be rather similar plus. it has a jester in it. so can you really top that? no. you can not.

IMHO, the problem with paper mario is the whole paper theme. I personally find the design very off putting. I’ll take the Super Mario RPG graphics over everything else in the list.
