I definitely think I prefer the older graphics just because the sprites seem a lot sillier and more expressive, and the colors just seem to pop a lot more. I like the softer colors in areas such as the backgrounds and the vibrancy of the character sprites over top of them. The newer one definitely does have some nice touches though with the lighting for example and the empty space not being a stark black, which I appreciate. The characters seem to blend in better to the background, which in some ways its nice but I prefer the vibrancy and definition they had from the background more myself. It's really a matter of preference though, I think both will be good options if you want to experience the game.

@@XxFrosty17xXjust thought I’d put this out there coming from someone who didn’t play either of these games or even know what they looked like before watching this video, the older graphics are better. The new ones are limited by the 3ds hardware and as such it leaves the same typical pixelated blur around every character the same way it did with smash on 3ds. The 3ds also apparently just can’t run 60 frames with this game, and it causes it to look extremely choppy, kind of like with Mario 3d land in some areas. The older versions graphics were obviously limited, but they didn’t push them to the point where it hurts your eyes to try and track what’s going on. The colours are much better on the gba version, the expressions are much better, and the game was clearly made to be pixelated. The extremely stiff movement shown in the remake is a result of the stiff movement that makes sense in 2d. Overall this game should’ve been remade as a 2d game not a 3d game or at least have a mode that allows you to revert it to 2d

Replacing the fight suit koopas with generic koopas. And replacing all the unique toad characters (including various men, children and women toads) with generic toads isn't a nitpick. It's an ongoing issue that's hurt the Paper Mario series as well.

there are minor changes here and there, but they were obviously not simply overssen but updated. i never even realised the carpet in peaches castle was supposed to show mushwooms until now, but the very decent arrows pointing towards her are gone. The house looks different, but look inside marios home! he now has the wii wheel (which he just put onto a cart in the original MK Wii Trailers, and even a golden cup trophy on his shelf :D

Kazoorion The "unique designs" are overated, in my opinion. I like 'em, but they ain't mandatory for my overap overall enjoyment. The Koopas not having helmets,for example, mean jackshit to me. As long as the Beanish-exclusive creatures are still around, I'm golden.

It's just one of a few small changes though. They could've just scrapped the bean bean guys and made them toads or something i dunno. They remade the koopa designs so new people that play it will recognize the koopa from the recent Mario games. But they kept everything else because they were original characters. At least they respect SS's originalities. I'm sick and tired of people shitting on this game because "OOHHHH THEY DIDNT KEEP THIS SPRITE OF MARIO ITS RUINNEEDD I LOVED THAT FACE OHHHHHH THIS GAME LOOKS GARBAGE," like fucking get over it. I am extremely pleased with how the remake looks. I love Superstar Saga to death and while I do have a couple nitpicks, overall the 3DS version is very faithful to the original. Bowser looks fantastic, I love how Mario and Luigi's animations were faithfully recreated, and it's awesome to hear that Cackletta and Fawful kept their old voice clips, not to mention the soundtrack. This is a must buy for me!

Hmm, a few areas look better in the original than the remaster but overall it's definitely an improvement. The expressiveness is all still there but it just seems like the 3DS version pulled back the camera a bit and shrunk a few of the sprites so they are a bit harder to look for, on top of not having those thick black outlines that help the sprites read a bit more. But things like the bowser sprite, the couple extra frames of animation given to every sprite, the backgrounds, and the little touches of light sources makes the characters and world feel a bit more lived in and natural even when the game is paused.

am i the only one confused about the complaints on the remake having “less animation” ?? take 6:15 for example,when they are stopped by the guards in the original,they are not reacting at all. if you look at the remake,they are shown to be confused and caught off guard by that. i even noticed a little thing at 6:35 - 6:37 on the remake where luigi tilts his head a little bit at some point when he’s talking to the guards. heck,in the one part of the game where luigi is dressed up as peach and is fleeing bowletta and fawful on the koopa cruiser,when blocking them off with the crates,instead of just standing there and hearing them get mad emotionlessly like in the original,he LITERALLY PULLS OUT A FAN AND WORKS THE DRESS,LAUGHING AT THEM CONFIDENTLY. and let’s not ignore the background animation either,the remade waterfalls from the previous timestamps look GORGEOUS. sure,certain more-iconic moments may have slightly less animation,but fans saying the whole remake in general has less animation really threw me off and i personally think it’s a bit of an overstatement. Overall, this looks & sounds absolutely amazing. Little touches I miss such as the over the top expressions & for some reason, no music playing after Mario & Luigi crashed in Stardust Fields. But its nice to see some other little touches come in with the updated models, like the Bros' fighting poses & the 1st boss wobbling as he flies, not to mention the lighting in the Koopaship. Nintendo's been a stickler for staying on model in recent years & while I miss the old models, I feel its not gonna be too terrible seeing as everything else looks nearly identical but better. 3DS remake versions look good and have all this new battle effects but I still prefer the charm of the original GBA and NDS versions of Mario & Luigi, there's something about the cartoonesque colorfulness it's more appealing to me than 3D/2D whatever it is, I'd love to see a Super Mario RPG Remake with those aesthetics on the 3DS or even Switch, I think 3DS was perfect for that game to do a Remake only because of aesthetics, but it was a missed opportunity and I doubt they ever will do a remake of that one, but here Mario & Luigi was supposed to look that colorful 2D cartoonish style, changing that is a completely different game for me, its almost like remaking Wind Waker's Toon Link into a Ocarina of Time visuals sort of aesthetics 😅 I dunno, it works but is weird.

The Sprite work and animation has been greatly improved. Though the shift from Toon style to a more CG like art style seems to have pissed quite a few fans off.

I was gonna say I love the new logo...but then I realized it's more or less the original Japanese logo from the GBA release. So it's just that NoA isn't ruining the logo this time. In other news, I'm loving the crisp music. I do prefer the pixel art of the original, but they kept the same art style, so there's no reason to complain. It looks just like the more recent Mario & Luigi RPG games.

Its awesome how they referenced Paper Mario by rolling back all the custom character designs into generic clones. The lack of face emotes also has me excited to see what else has been chipped away! Great Job!

The reason why people are so resistant to the changes this remake makes, is because up until now, most remakes didn't even need to make these changes. Most games that were remade did not have that much expressiveness in the first place, so a choice to remove some expressions was not even necessary. Trust me if all the original expressions and character designs were implemented in some way most of these complaints wouldn't even be happening. I don't think anyone's really resistant to the use of 3d models and lighting engines in this remake, since that's kind of the point. Also some of these issues are simply us just not wanting to see the M&L series go down the road of Paper Mario, where almost every npc is just a recolored toad. Sure this happened in Paper Jam too, but it was already partially a Paper Mario game, so it was to be expected. We resist change, because too much change happened in Paper Mario, and we don't want the same for the Mario & Luigi series. This game will still be as good as the original, it's just disappointing that not every expression and character design of the original could be implemented in the remake. I'm not sure if I'll buy this game, but that has nothing to do with the changes, just that I don't know if I really need to own 2 versions of the same game lol.

The graphics in the new version seem more blurred, less defined. Look at them side by side and the GBA version was crisp and clear but the new version looks a little blurry. One of my big gripes with the new version is the music. The original was fantastic but they changed things up, especially with the battle music that I've heard. Just too much of a tweak from the original since the original was like perfect. That being said I will probably still pick this up because it is my second favorite Mario RPG, succeeded only by LOTSS
