I'm pretty sure they had the voice actor actually play the games and then edited some extra lines and edited Mario in. Because he sounds so chill here compared to other times. But the part that convinced me is the part (4:46) when he realized Mario was hiding there. That made me assume he was actually playing the game and he was actually reacting that way.

The fact that not only was SMG3's animation RIDICULOUSLY smooth here, but I love how you can almost feel Mario grow a few brain cells just to punch SMG3 in the shoulder and go "oh, does Mr. Confident not know how to jump? Because I can give you a tutorial if you need one... 😉" because of how smooth he was animated in reaction to SMG3. Feels like they're already fast friends.
