When Zazz mentioned that you have to make it to the finals, I think he means that you have to finish the prelims and then go talk to him.

I don't know if anyone told you yet but the characters just standing around like Zazz who want to challenge you are unlockable characters. You complete the Plus event of the event for that day to unlock them. Nabbit was pretty easy but Zazz and those synchronized swimming gyms kept me on Day 2 for a few days. I can't say if you can unlock Zazz in Mario's route or if you need to redo Sonic's since I'm only on Day 4 and just started the game myself with Sonic but I want to take no chances. By the way, if Day 3's event/Plus event gives you trouble, I recommend trying to get melons to get some upgraded gear from the Yellow Yoshi. Melons are in those treasure chests scattered around the towns and in at least one trash can I've found. It helps a ton. Oh, and don't forget to check out the Blue Yoshi shop too. Every day's event makes it add to its stock.There's also some sort of plot you can discover by talking to Miis and stuff, which is interesting to read in my opinion.

Tips to play like a boss This one is for everyone awesome (aka everybody because everyone's awesome) 1. Make sure to check every inch for secrets 2. To unlock characters talk to them after prelims 3. Try to get up to⭐️level 20 ASAP but wait for trainers that give more training points 4. GET AS MANY 🍎's AS YOU CAN (it WILL pay off, trust me) 5. Once you got steps 1, 2, 3, and 4 down, GO A FREAKING SHOPPING SPREE!! Repeat all steps for each new game and you are a boss
