Mario Strikers: Battle League is part skillful soccer game, part ruthless brawler, and almost always a complete blast to play. If you've played any games in the series before, there won't be many surprises in store for you and the small roster of characters and game modes is definitely disappointing, but what's there is incredibly fun and replayable. I'm impressed by the online mode in the time I've had with it so far too, as it sets the stage for a ranked playlist that I look forward to grinding my way to the top of.

Problems with this game (as a Mario Strikers Charged lover): -no charging the ball -sound design is bland (remember how awesome the sounds were when passing and shooting in Charged?) -no epic slow-mo shots -field is too small -no slide tackle button -no unique game-changing dodges (ex: hammer bro throwing a hammer down to hit the person trying to tackle them) -less characters -no sidekick characters (feels weird to have the same character on each team and makes the captain feel insignificant) -no character special shots (it used to do a unique special shot for each character if you held down the shoot button) -less maps -maps are bland, no unique obstacles or anything -no challenges mode (the challenges in Charged were actually pretty fun) -no career mode (Charged didn't have this either) -controls just don't feel great, and you can't change them -no unlockables -can't control the goalie at all

Also technically there is slide tackling. You have to perfect time your tackle and they will do a slide.

So about the limited amount of characters you mentioned, well it was actually leaked in the game’s files that there are actually 20 character slots total hidden inside. This either means Nintendo is being really secretive about unlockable characters and aren’t telling us about it, or they have a total of 10 dlc characters they’re preparing

Strikers charged was way better. Way more identity to each playable character, with unique dodges and charged strikes. Hammer Bro could drop a hammer on his opponents to crush them, freeing up room to take a shot, where if he charges it fully, he throws hammers at the goalie knocking him down to score into an open net. Dry bones with his dodge could literally teleport behind the goalkeeper and walk the ball into the net with his unique dodge if you timed it to perfection, or with his charged shot he could electrocute the keeper giving an opportunity for a teammate to score while he was stunned. Maybe it wasn't the most balanced game in the world, but it certainly had more character and was more enjoyable.

That’s not even scratching the surface. Strikers charged had all of the maps from the original game and even more maps that of it’s which were all creative, unique, and fun. This game on the other hand only has five maps and all of them are bland and generic. The menus on charged are all very cool and fun to look at while this games menus just look bland and generic. The gameplay in charged is very fun, exciting, and very cool to learn all the tricks and stuff. Battle league on the other hand while decently fun, can not match with the awesomeness of charged. The music in charged is amazing and most of the songs are bops to listen to. Battle league though has generic and forgettable music. There is more but that’s all I’m gonna day.

Hyper strike is a terrible mechanic, at least in single player. Basically a ball appears and if it’s not near the character you’re controlling, you’re probably not getting it (as you have to drop what you’re doing and cycle through until you get to the right character). When you’re opponent gets it, the best approach seems to just pass the ball in a triangle in your own half until the ability for them to hyper strike wears off, otherwise they get a free two points just from stepping in your half.

Imagine if this game had a campaign mode where your Mii counterpart starts off the season with a team scrubs, and has an end goal of taking their team to the championship cup. You could win matches and complete challenges to unlock team customizations, hire all star free agents, and evolve your team of scrubs into being better players. Perhaps throw in some fun diversion mini-games to train your team. A really meaty single player like that would have convinced me to buy this.

Eh I'm actually a little disappointed in the lack of polish... The minimal single player/local player options is disappointing, there's the obvious roster issue, we lost the character themes from Charged, and there are significantly less win & loss animations for the characters. Not to mention they've been reusing these characters' voice clips for years at this point. I'm really interested to see how future DLC changes things

My biggest issue with this game is the AI. The enemy team's AI is smart, while your team's are just purely incompetent - they won't even chase after items while the enemy's IMMEDIATELY goes for it. And the worst part of it all is that you can't even swap to them properly - it's like a roulette and cycle that you have to go to manually cycle to the character you want to take over for. Their team's goalie is highly competent, mine can't even block a straight-shot from half-field. Until they rebalance the AI's, I've uninstalled it from my Switch. It's really bad. :/

@@spiritualsoul2711 the game is fun though so that's enough for me 🤷‍♂️ (also a LOT has changes since charged/super. This game has much more stuff you can do while playing and it's super cool. Also, it isn't the devs's fault this game is "unfinished". Nintendo are the ones rushing next level.)

For anyone curious, this isn't just "another Mario sports game." The developer of the Mario Strikers series (Next Level Games) has been one of Nintendo's best 2nd party developers. Luigi's Mansion 3 proved that they're arguably better at displaying the Mario characters' personalities than even Nintendo themselves, and this game looks to continue it. I'm excited.

Remember when EA was attacked for shipping a Battlefield multiplayer only game at FULL PRICE? Apparently they forgot when Nintendo did the same!! Which battlefield is released every year....The last strikers game was 15 years and "little has changed since then"💀
