Really great video Mario! I'm so happy I'm not the only one with random Maya crashes 😂 but it was really great seeing how circularize works even without having enough points of a basic circle as long as you reinforce the edges. I thought I was doing it wrong

Hi! I really like your work (probably next summer I will buy your Maya course!). Just a question, why sometimes do you use Maya and others C4D? Is C4D any "better" regarding hard surface modelling?
@Elementza
@Elementza 5 жыл бұрын
Hi! I´m not using C4D for more than a year now actually. I really can´t say is Maya better or not. For me, it might be better but for someone else, it might not be a good fit. I´m using Maya cause my workflow is faster than it was in C4D, and it has more tools available that fit into that workflow. Hope this makes sense :)

I really wish the Circularize tool was more reliable. It has great potential but chucks out too many undesirable results. The fact you have to twist your faces to account for it's inaccuracies is really frustrating, especially when at that point I'd rather just insert a cylinder and bridge the edges instead. Great video though, and really inspiring! I'm planning on some sub-d practice/general modelling practice soon so this has come at just the right time. Thanks!

Here is the problem with this; you are making all the segments align based on the topology, but often you'll have an object where you'll have things overlapping topology in a weird way, where you have to introduce additional edges and it starts to make a problem for other parts of an object. I've started modelling with NURBS surfaces long time ago, and not trimmed surfaces, but planned topology via curves, which can offer really amazing resolution and precision. It is a tedious process and often you have to build a lot of curves before you start lofting, extruding, and so on. To my knowledge that seems to be least efficient way but at the same time the most precise way of building an object, other than using Studio Tools or Rhino, or some other software. When I eventually switched to polygons it was way faster of course, way more intuitive, however it also became very frustrating. I've tried modelling a blender once, but I really wanted to be precise, and it took me a lot of time achieving something that looked accurate, because if you want to have an optimized topology, everything lining up and making sense, there are a lot of challenges. I guess what I am saying is we don't ever get that perfection example in tutorials, it is always something arbitrary, convenient for modelling, and a lot of times that is not enough to master modelling.
@Elementza
@Elementza 10 ай бұрын
Hey thanks for taking the time to write this! Valid points yep I agree 100%. Especially if this was the only video/example uploaded on this channel. However... its not :) So a little context matters. Complex forms are all made out of simple ones connected together. Master how you do simple ones first, do them well, and you´ll be able to do any complex form you need without blinking. "I guess what I am saying is we don't ever get that perfection example in tutorials, it is always something arbitrary, convenient for modelling and a lot of times that is not enough to master modelling."" Again all true valid points, but... there is a but :) There is no perfect example as each situation is different based on the final product. Since you´re commenting on my video I´ll assume you talk about me too. However... if you check my channel or my website, you´ll see that we explore topology workflow in great detail. Especially the Topology Workshop which is sort of the anatomy of hard surface training, covering exactly the points you just mentioned above. Including the training that says... Master 3D Modeling :) (EDIT: In case you wish to check it out) Thanks again for your time -mario

@@Elementza Thanks for taking the time to reply, you are really dedicated to educate people :) I really appreciate it. I come from NURBS modelling and I can tell you sometimes it is really challenging to make a "perfect" topology. Maybe I was doing it wrong, obsessively in an unhealthy way. I wanted every detail to be uniform, meaning every part would have minimal but sufficient amount of isoparms and G2 continuity, but still make everything flow and be evenly distributed. I come to learn that those who are into class A modelling are dealing with a different set of tools and it is really different from VFX industry, where I currently work. When I dropped a comment here I wasn't really trying to say that your skills are questionable, it was more the example that I found too convenient. But the silliest thing is that no one sees these things when it comes to presentation to audience. I remember working on one show where everything that could get wrong got wrong, it was about 2015 I think at MPC. But with such talented group of people it eventually came together. We all went to cinema, a company screening, and I was expecting a disaster, but it looked awesome. Head of 2D later said "they did a lot of grading to make this work", I laughed because I thought we've done so much work, had so many challenges and issues, and not nearly enough time and resources, yet all it took was.... grading?!?! The truth is that many of us are obsessive compulsive and this is why this work is meant for us, it is a puzzle we solve while thinking about other stuff. It reminds me of old people doing crossword puzzles. Anyway, thank you again and I will explore your channel more. By the way I have quit modelling long time ago, I am now in frontlines of VFX... the comp department which is always burdened by challenges trickling down from other departments only to be fixed in the last effort on our end. Now I do modelling for my personal projects.
